We recently sent one of our guest reviewers, Blake’s Broadcast, two Ferris Wheel Press Brush fountain pens, one with their original stainless steel fountain pen nib, and the other with a gold-plated nib. Blake regularly shared video reviews (with full write ups in most cases) across his social media channels and on his website. And they’re all featuring fountain pens, paper, and ink…you might want to check him out if you like hearing (and seeing) the nitty gritty details of the products you love, and the products you’re hoping to love.

Read on for a few highlights and tidbits about the Ferris Wheel Press Brush fountain pen and how the stainless steel nib compares to the gold-plated stainless steel nib.

The Brush Fountain Pen Nib Review: The Products & the Maker

This review’s focus was the original pen release from popular Canadian stationery, pen, and ink maker, Ferris Wheel Press. Their Ferris Wheel Press Brush fountain pen is available in many colors (and a couple different finishes), and two different nibs: the stainless steel and the gold-plated stainless steel. We were curious to see what one of our most thorough guest reviewers would make of the two nibs, so we suggested a bit of a comparison between the two. We sent out the Ferris Wheel Press Brush fountain pen ink Sandcastle Clay and a second Ferris Wheel Press Brush fountain pen in Red Carpet with a 14kt gold plated nib.

A Few Highlights: Brush Fountain Pen Nib Review

Consider a few highlights from Blake’s Ferris Wheel Press Brush fountain pen nib review below.

What Blake liked about the Ferris Wheel Press Brush Fountain Pen:

  • The gloss lacquer finish
  • The unique paintbrush shape
  • The CNC etched brass grip (the best part of the pen in Blake’s opinion)
  • The patina you can expect for the brass nut and grip (Blake noted the brass nut seems to patina faster than the grip section)
  • The pen’s steampunk vibe
  • The placement of the nib grade on the brass section in alignment with the nib (a cool, unusual detail Blake enjoyed)

What Blake Didn’t Like About the Ferris Wheel Press Brush Fountain Pen (or did he?):

There was one element of the pen that Blake initially didn’t like, but it grew on him as he used the pen…can you guess what it was? {Scroll to the bottom to find your answer}. Blake did also note that the price of the pens was on the higher side in comparison to some gold nib options out there on the market.

The Stainless Steel Nib and the Gold-Plated Nib:

When Blake first attempted to use the Sandcastle Clay pen it was unusually difficult to get started. After he flushed the pen multiple times it started writing, and after that point it wrote reliably. Blake was working with fine nibs in his review (the Brush fountain pens are only available in F or M nib). The Red Carpet wrote immediately with all the drama Sandcastle Clay required. Blake found that both the stainless steel nib and the gold-plated stainless steel nib were pretty smooth he was pleased with the performance of both options overall. The gold-plated nib comes at an additional cost ($22 increase in MSRP), and Blake wasn’t able to tell the difference when it came to how the nibs performed. He felt that for the typical fountain pen user, the only difference between the two nibs is cosmetic.

More About the Ferris Wheel Press Brush Fountain Pen:

If you aren’t familiar with the Ferris Wheel Press Brush fountain pen, Blake described it as a fun brass-bodied pen shaped like a traditional paintbrush. The pen is postable, but it’s not recommended. Posting the pen seems likely to cause damage to the lacquer finish of the elegant Ferris Wheel Press Brush fountain pen, and no one wants that.
