Rohrer & Klingner Salix Ink Review

Rohrer & Klingner Salix Ink is a blue color ink from renowned ink company, Rohrer & Klingner. Salix, which is also a French Willow tree, is not a bright, vibrant blue color, but is rather a muted lighter blue fountain pen ink, which can be used as a everyday ink color that produces dark appeasing lines. Although Salix does not have an equal in its shade, it is similar to some blue blacks, and Diamine Prussian Blue.

Please note the various characteristics that we have found using Rohrer & Klingner Salix ink:

Testing Factors

We used a glass dip pen, made by J Herbin, which is similar to using an extra fine nib, with Rhodia Block N. 18 paper, which is great for fountain pen use.

Bottle Sizes

All Rohrer & Klingner fountain pen inks come in a 50 ml. round glass bottle, with a large neck, which makes it accessible to all pen sizes. Pen Chalet carries a wide assortment of Rohrer & Klinger inks, which are imported directly from Germany, as there is not US distributor.

Cost

The cost for this imported ink is a very reasonable $11.95 for a large 50 ml bottle. Due to the ink being imported directly from Germany, if Pen Chalet happens to be temporarily out of stock, it may take a few days to a week to replenish our supplies.

Dry Time

With the J. Herbin dip pen, the dry time was a reasonable 5-6 seconds. Obviously with a larger nib, the dry time will be extended, but is still functional for an everyday ink.

Bleed Through

Using the Rohrer & Klingner Salix ink there was absolutely no bleeding. Even using the dipped cotton swabs and running over the same area 3 times, produced no bleeding at all.

Feathering

There was no feathering with this ink, even under a magnifying glass. Additionally, even running a wet cotton swab over Rohrer & Klingner Salix ink failed to feather the lines, which is quite impressive.

Water Test

Rohrer & Klingner Salix ink is not considered waterproof, but we would label it as definitely water resistant, if not waterproof, as there was no feathering, smudging or smearing when running a wet cotton swab over this ink after a 3 minute dry time.

Shading

Rohrer & Klingner Salix ink will produce some light to medium shading, which is more noticeable the larger sized nib used.

Overall – Rohrer & Klingner Salix Ink

High quality, imported German ink, very pretty unique shade, with good shading, no feathering, very close to waterproof at a wonderful price for a large 50 ml. bottle. Definitely a great ink to purchase up at Pen Chalet.
