Platinum has been making fine writing instruments of over 90 years. Founded in since 1919 by Shunichi Nakata, this Japanese pen company is well respected for their fine nibs and maki-e art pens. The company was originally named Nakaya seisakusho which means manufacturer but renamed to Platinum Fountain Pen Co along with its logo which became a motif of earth.
After WWII the company changed its name from Platinum Fountain Pen Company to Platinum Industry Company only to change the name back to Platinum Fountain Pen Company in 1962.

Grabbed the blue carp waterfalls the minute I saw it and glad I did. So pretty with the silver accents. Eyedroppered with Van Dieman's Twilight Zone from their Sea collection and it's perfect. You can't go wrong with a Preppy :)

I did not have a single pen inked with black ink before I bought this ink. I thought that black ink was boring. Even before I started using fountain pens I never used black ink because it was boring. This ink is NOT boring. It is STRIKING. It is shockingly, amazingly, eye-catchingly black. Even when I scan my notes made for work with this ink, it is eye-catching even on a scanned PDF. The power of this ultra black ink transcends even a scanner. It is also AMAZINGLY smooth to write with. I love this ink.

I love writing with a Procyon pen. I now have 4 of them in different colors. They are my "work" pens. I use a variety of permanent inks with a converter. All of mine are (F) nibs. The one that is inked with Platinum Chou-Kuro ink may be the smoothest writing Japanese fine steel nib + ink combo I've discovered yet.

I have not used a fountain pen in over 40 years. It has been a real treat to rediscover my love of fountain pens. Love that I can use before or after watercoloring. No bleeding if I give it a second to bond with the Tomoe paper. I have been using almost daily since it arrived and have not had to change the ink cartridge or clean it. Looks to be an easy process. Love the long handle which makes it easy to find in my pen cup.

I love this throw back old school desk stand. I have lots of vintage Esterbrook desk pens, and it looks classy on my desk.

Excellent pen! The fine nib is closer to extra fine (which I like) and it writes first time, every time no matter the ink. I have four of them and they are all a delight to use.

I got this pen because I had already bought multiple Pilot pens and a Sailor pen and loved them. So I wanted to try another famous Japanese brand. Great pen. Good quality for the price. Even with a fine nib it slides across the page.

The art on the pen is beautiful and has great texture. I hesitate to post the cap because it partially obscures/rubs against the art. It's a very lightweight pen, and feels fragile to me. The snap cap is really satisfying, and the nib is soft and flexible, which is nice because not a lot of pressure is needed when writing to lay down the ink.

The modern maki-e is a beautiful pen with a very smooth 18k nib. It is very balanced and a pleasure to write with. I filled it with Robert Oster Australian Shiraz (Syrah) and the color of the ink compliments the details of the Phoenix and it writes consistently every time. The pen is definitely a wet writer and a perfect EDC.

I bought a Platinum Preppy in Black with an EF nib, and it's great! It writes wonderful, thin lines that work well with my small handwriting, and it's very smooth. The price is also EXTREMELY reasonable for a pen that writes so nicely, so I completely understand why many people suggest this as an entry pen. It's astounding.
My only gripe might be that the resin/plastic body doesn't feel very sturdy. With a pen at this cost, I'd want to be able to throw it in my pen pouch and carry it with me, but I don't feel confident that it would survive. The build just doesn't feel extremely strong, and I'm worried about it breaking and then leaking ink everywhere.
Otherwise, I really have to praise the design. The spring-loaded mechanism in the cap is ingenious since it promotes longevity in the ink, and it's a lightweight pen whose nib just skates delicately over surfaces. I can see myself buying a few more of these (for inking with my everyday colors) because they work beautifully and feel dependable at an incredible price point.

I don't love that converters cost as much as they do, seeing as I could buy an entire Preppy with that money. Still, having a converter makes life easy, which is why I bought this. It does what it needs to do, and that's exactly why one buys a converter. The quality of its build feels perfunctory -- not quite sturdy but good enough to do its job without much worry.
The only other thing maybe worth mentioning is that I put this in my Fukura Suzume Preppy Wa, and it looks lovely since it's visible through the pink resin/plastic of the pen's body while also matching the gold glitter of the detailing.

Together with the easy-to-use desk stand this pen provides me with instant access to a quality, top-tier, ready-to-write pen and I don't have to keep taking the cap off and putting it back on while I'm waiting a few minutes to ponder my next word or make notes while I'm on the phone.

I have been pleased to purchase each of the pens in every one of the three series. All of them have been excellent in every regard. They have quality nibs, are well-made and aesthetically pleasing. It is my hope that Platinum will continue to produce these models yearly and connect the design on each of the them with some aspect of Japanese culture.
