All About the Ink Maker: Robert Oster

Pen Chalet enjoys a great partnership with Robert Oster himself. We currently carry close to 150 different Robert Oster ink colors and offer a Pen Chalet Exclusive Robert Oster ink color Antelope Canyon. (On the down-low, we’re currently working with Robert Oster on more Arizona themed exclusive ink colors). Since most Robert Oster inks reflect the Australian landscape or scenery, it’s delightful to see the finished colors, shades, and sheens that result from Arizona themed fountain pen ink collaborations with this well-loved ink maker.

This Week’s Featured Ink: Blue Denim Ink

Blue fountain pen inks are a favorite of pen enthusiasts; possibly because there are so many shades of blue in our day to day life, from the blues of nature ( the landscape, waters, and sky) to the clothing we wear, etc. Robert Oster Blue Denim ink is a gorgeous deep blue (not royal blue or turquoise blue, but a lovely shade right in between the two). Robert Oster’s Blue Denim ink’s deep blue shows up well on paper and is a great everyday blue ink choice for any notetaking, journaling, or ink project.

Ink Review Testing Factors (to keep things scientific):

We used a French-made J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen (with a tip comparable to a medium-fine fountain pen nib) and Rhodia dot pad paper.

Let’s Talk About the Robert Oster Ink Bottle:

Robert Oster Blue Denim ink comes in only one size, the standard PET, environmentally friendly plastic 50 ml. ink bottle with a leak-proof cap. Each Robert Oster ink bottle is identical, except for the silver caps designating shimmering inks in the Robert Oster Shake’ N’ Shimmy line, and the sample swab of the ink’s color on the simple white label printed and applied to the bottle’s cap. Inks come with (and require) no additional packaging, which keeps costs down and avoids unnecessary waste.

How Much Does Robert Oster Fountain Pen Ink Cost?

Robert Oster Blue Denim fountain pen ink is part of the Robert Oster Signature Ink Series, which is very reasonably mid-range priced for a 50 ml. quantity. Check for the latest discounted price at PenChalet.com.

How Did This Week’s Ink Fair in the 1-Dip Test?

We conducted a 1-dip test with Robert Oster Blue Denim ink using a J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen and Rhodia dot pad paper. (For the 1-Dip Test, we dip the pen in ink once for each of three different writing samples. The three writing samples include: “S,” “X,” and scribble lines. The test looks for how well the ink performs on paper by showing if the pen runs out of ink before completing a full line). Blue Denim ink very easily wrote across the paper on all three writing samples with plenty of ink to spare.

How Fast Does the Blue Denim Ink Dry?

Robert Oster’s Blue Denim fountain pen ink showed a dry time of approximately 6-7 seconds with medium saturation. The ink’s dry time was very reasonable; Blue Denim is an excellent choice for an everyday ink.

Does Robert Oster Blue Denim Ink Bleed Through?

We saw no bleeding during normal use on Rhodia paper. There was very slight bleeding during the heavy saturated cotton swab test, but only at the sample’s wettest point.

Was There Any Feathering While Using Blue Denim Ink?

We saw no feathering during normal use on Rhodia dot pad paper. We did see some slight feathering and line distortion during the water test, but that’s expected with non-waterproof inks. The lines were still very legible.

How Does the Ink Stand Up to Water?

For the water test, we let an ink sample dry for about 3 minutes before running a wet cotton swab over the sample. Robert Oster ink isn’t waterproof, and we saw heavy color smearing typical of dark ink colors. The lines were still legible, but they did show some very slight distortion and line fading.

Does the Fountain Pen Ink Have Good Shading & Sheening Traits?

Robert Oster Blue Denim ink showed some excellent shading possibilities, depending on penmanship and the type of nib. Blue Denim showed a slight red sheen at the cotton swab test’s wettest point, which is unintended.

Final Conclusion on this Week’s Featured Robert Oster Ink:

Blue Denim is a reasonably priced ink for a 50 ml. bottle size. The ink maker, Robert Oster, is a well regarded and prolific Australian ink company known for a vast array of trustworthy, beautiful inks and simple, efficient packaging. Blue Denim is a nice, unique, dark blue color with a reasonable dry time of 6-7 seconds. Happy writing from Australia!

Gorgeous blue with red sheen. If I don’t win I’ll certainly buy some. Reminds me of Iroshizuku Asa-Gao.

Really hits the “denim” look. I find RO inks a bit pricey, but they have some really interesting colours in the stable.
