About S.T. Dupont

S.T. Dupont has been seen as a status symbol since 1941 with the introduction of their luxury petrol lighters. However, with a company such as S.T. Dupont, which has a legacy spanning six generations since the first workshop was opened in 1872, they are not limited to making one luxury item. S.T. Dupont’s venture into luxury pens came at the behest of Jackie Kennedy, the former First Lady of the United States of America when she asked the brand to make her a writing instrument that would match her S.T. Dupont lighter.

As a brand, S.T. Dupont values fine French craftsmanship and takes pride in passing down honed techniques from generation to generation. One of the key elements of their style and mastered techniques is the natural lacquer that they use on their products. A difficult organic material, the lacquer is resistant to shocks, scratches, and fire, and thus products bought from S.T. Dupont are made to weather life. The time-table for making one of S.T. Dupont’s writing instruments involved 150 different processes, cycling through the hands of master craftsmen. The nibs are made of solid 14K gold and the caps are designed to connect with the pen with an audible “click”, an invocative homage to the “cling” sound that the lid of a lighter makes reconnects with the body.

S.T. Dupont creates different styles of pens, covering Fountain Pens, Rollerball Pens, and Ballpoint Pens. There are some differences between the types of pens, such as the ballpoint pens use a thick oil-based ink, while the rollerball pen uses liquid ink. This difference gives the rollerball a smoother feel when it glides across paper, a sensation comparable to the fountain pen.

Selection of S.T. Dupont Pens

S.T. Dupont D-Initial Fountain Pens are the brand’s base model for pens. While still a quality pen, the D-Initial line was made to be more affordable. The resin used on the body of the pen is not the same lacquer used on the other lines of pens and the nib is made of stainless steel, in comparison to 14K gold. However, these differences do not make the D-Initial Pens an average, run-of-the-mill pen. Still a product of S.T. Dupont’s aim for perfection, the D-Initial pens are a worthwhile purchase.

Another facet of the S.T. Dupont pen line-up is the Line D collection. Available in both medium and large, this line is sure to meet your needs. While the Line D Medium pens measure in at the size of an average fountain pen, Line D Large has a greater diameter making the pen wider. In choosing between the two it really comes down to how you want the pen to feel in your hand. The Line D Large pens, while surely wider, offer the comforting feeling that comes with gripping a larger writing instrument. Both styles of pen are made with S.T. Dupont’s signature lacquer and a 14K gold nib. Furthermore, they both come in a wide range of colors and designs, that make each pen wholly unique.
