All About the Ink Maker: Conklin
Conklin was established back in 1898. In their early days, they made a lot of innovative designs and their pens were popular for both collectors and everyday writers. In fact, Mark Twain is known to be one of Conklin Pen Company’s earliest (unofficial) endorsers; thus the release of the Conklin Crescent Filler Pen. Today, Conklin continues their tradition of pen-making and creates high quality writing instruments worthy of the Conklin name. In 2022, Conklin released an ink collection. All About This Week’s Ink Series: Conklin Vintage Ink Series

For this Conklin Vintage Purple ink review, we put this vivid purple ink through our standard ink review tests. The ink review results should give you a better idea of just what you could expect if you need this ink in your collection.Ink Review Testing Factors (to keep things scientific):
As usual, we used a french-made J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen (with a tip comparable to a medium-fine fountain pen nib) on Rhodia dot pad paper. If you use a different size nib or different paper or simply have a significantly different style of writing, you could see different results. But here’s how it went down for us during this week’s review. What Sort of Ink Bottle Does Conklin Use for its Vintage Inks?
Conklin Vintage Purple ink comes in a vintage medicine style ink bottle with simple packaging, label and box. Each of the ink bottles comes with a vintage style, metal, medium mouth lid that is easy to open. It’s easy to identify the ink color because it’s clearly marked on both the bottle and the box.How Much Do Inks in Conklin’s Vintage Collection Cost?
Conklin Vintage inks are very reasonably priced. We’d go so far as to categorize this new fountain pen ink as a very economically priced ink. Look for the current sale price at PenChalet.com.How Did This Week’s Ink Fair in the 1-Dip Test?
We use the 1-dip test to see how far one dip can write on paper (dipping the pen into the ink only once). Conklin Vintage Purple ink very easily wrote across the paper on all three writing samples with lots of ink to spare. (Using only one dip per writing sample “S” “X” and scribble lines, see the image above). How Fast Does Conklin Purple Dry?
During our ink review, Conklin Purple fountain pen ink showed a very fast dry time of approximately 2-3 seconds with high saturation. This purple ink can easily be a go to everyday ink.Does This Week’s Fountain Pen Ink Bleed Through?
We saw some slight bleeding during normal use and a bit more bleeding during the heavy saturated cotton swab test. (Test was conducted on Rhodia paper). Was There Any Feathering During the Vintage Purple Ink Review?
We saw no feathering during normal use, and almost no additional feathering during the water test. How Does the Ink Stand Up to Water?
Conklin Vintage Purple ink is not meant to be waterproof, but it’s very close to being so. We know because even though it’s not waterproof, we put it to the test anyway. For the water test we let our ink sample dry for about 3 minutes before we run a wet cotton swab over the sample to observe the effect. Here are the results we saw during today’s review:- very light, almost non-existent color smearing
- lines very legible
- almost no additional distortion or line fading
