All About This Week’s Chosen Ink: Robert Oster Scorpion Ink

Robert Oster Scorpion ink is the latest release in the Pen Chalet Exclusive Rober Oster ink series featuring ink colors inspired by Arizona. If you aren’t familiar with Arizona, throughout the spring, summer and early fall, scorpions come out at night. Under the beam of a florescent light scorpions glow, but normally they’re a yellow, golden-brown (somewhat translucent) color. Coming across a scorpion unexpectedly can be terrifying, but most experienced Arizonans accept them as just another part of the beautiful Arizona landscape; long-time residents may even develop an appreciation and find seeing one exciting…as long as they’re doing so from a safe distance. To reflect this particular aspect of the Arizona landscape, Robert Oster Scorpion ink is a beautiful light, golden brown color; reminiscent of an Arizona Bark Scorpion. (Yes, there are a number of different types of scorpion out there in the world, but we’ll save that discussion for another day). ***Wondering where to find the giveaway for the inks in our weekly ink reviews? Ink Review Testing Factors (to keep things scientific):

As usual, we used a  J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen (with a tip comparable to a medium-fine fountain pen nib) on Rhodia dot pad paper. (Remember as you read this review that different papers or different nib sizes may produce different results!)

What Sort of Ink Bottle Does Robert Oster Use for the Pen Chalet Exclusive Inks?

Pen Chalet Exclusive Robert Oster Scorpion ink

Pen Chalet Exclusive Robert Oster Scorpion ink in the 50ml PET bottle.

Robert Oster Scorpion ink comes in Robert Oster’s standard 50ml PET environmentally friendly plastic ink bottle with a leak proof cap. Each Robert Oster bottle is identical with a simple white label printed with a representation of the ink color and text indicating this is a PenChalet.com exclusive on the cap. Robert Oster does not have any additional packaging which keeps the costs of the ink down.

How Much Do Inks in Pen Chalet’s Exclusive Robert Oster Ink Collection Cost?

Pen Chalet Exclusive Robert Oster inks are very reasonably priced for a 50ml quantity. Look for the current sale price at PenChalet.com.

How Did This Week’s Ink Fair in the 1-Dip Test?

We use the 1-dip test to see how far one dip can write on paper (dipping the pen into the ink only once). Scorpion ink very easily wrote across the paper on all three writing samples with lots of ink to spare. (Using only one dip per writing sample “S” “X” and scribble lines, see the image above).

How Fast Does Robert Oster Scorpion Ink Dry?

During our ink review, Pen Chalet Exclusive Robert Oster Scorpion ink showed a dry time of approximately 6-7 seconds with medium saturation, which is a very reasonable dry time, and acceptable for an everyday ink.

Does This Week’s Fountain Pen Ink Bleed Through?

We saw no bleeding during normal use on Rhodia dot pad paper. However, there was a slight amount of bleeding during the heavy saturated cotton swab test (but only at the wettest points).

Was There Any Feathering During the Scorpion Ink Review?

We saw no feathering during normal use, and just some very slight feathering during the water test.

How Does the Ink Stand Up to Water?

Robert Oster Scorpion ink is not meant to be waterproof, but we put it to the test anyway. For the water test we let our ink sample dry for about 3 minutes before we run a wet cotton swab over the sample to observe the effect. Here are the results we saw during today’s review:
  • Very light color smearing
  • Lines still very legible
  • Almost no distortion or line fading

Does Robert Oster Scorpion Ink Have Good Shading Traits?

Robert Oster Scorpion ink showed some fantastic shading possibilities – particularly with the right penmanship and a nib that allows for line variation. We saw from a dark, golden brown to a lighter, almost dark yellow shade.

Final Conclusion on Robert Oster Scorpion Ink:

Robert Oster Scorpion ink is a reasonably priced ink that comes in the standard 50ml PET plastic ink bottle. The nice, dark golden-brown color shows up well on paper with nice shading traits, and a good dry time of 6-7 seconds. The ink is made by Robert Oster, a prolific Australian ink company. The company is known for their minimalistic packaging (no extra packaging means no extra waste). Robert Oster Scorpion ink is the latest release in the Pen Chalet Exclusive Robert Oster ink collection – a collaboration that resulted in a lineup of 7 different inks from the Aussie ink maker with colors inspired by Pen Chalet’s home state in the USA: Arizona.
