Ferris Wheel Press fountain pen inks

Are you familiar with the Ferris Wheel Press brand? Ferris Wheel Press (or FWP) is a Canadian stationery company offering a beautiful array of products – their most popular product (in our experience) is their fountain pen ink. The company’s slogan, “Fall in Love with Writing Again,” TM is a shout-out in support of writing enthusiasts around the globe. Generally, Ferris Wheel Press inks are water-based inks made with high-quality dyes that create deep saturated tones and low sheen. The brand releases new colors frequently and is known for a vast array of gorgeous ink colors AND amazing packaging. (More on their packaging below). Ferris Wheel Press inks are made in Canada, and the inks are fountain pen-safe.

This week’s featured ink is from the Ferris Wheel Press King Midas Collection.

The Ink Series: The King Midas Collection

The King Midas Collection is inspired by a timeless story full of vibrant, unforgettable images. It paves the way for some truly spectacular ink shades, in true Ferris Wheel Press style. The first release in the collection was Ambrosia Indulgence fountain pen ink, this week’s featured ink.

(The 2nd ink the collection was released for preorder October 18, 2024, Age of Aurum ink).

Ink Review Testing Factors (Just Keeping Things Scientific):

For this week’s ink review, we tested FWP Ambrosia Indulgence ink using a French-made J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen (with a tip comparable to a medium-fine fountain pen nib) on Rhodia lined paper. Remember that using different papers or different nib sizes may produce different results!

What Does the Ferris Wheel Press Ambrosia Indulgence Bottle & Packaging Look Like?

Ferris Wheel Press Ambrosia Indulgence Ink Review: ink swatch with ink bottles
Ferris Wheel Press Ambrosia Indulgence is available in 20ml, 85ml or 10ml ink pot sizes.

Ferris Wheel Press Ambrosia Indulgence ink comes in their 20ml mini globe glass bottle. (Their outer packaging is completely gorgeous, and very professional – always!) The Ferris Wheel Press products are heavily branded and themed – something about Ferris Wheel Press inks that their adoring fans love. The ink’s packaging also includes extra protection for the ink bottle inside the box. The bottle itself is display quality and collectible. Ink fans will also enjoy the easy to open, unique, and interesting brass lug nut cap with what Ferris Wheel Press describes as a secure locking mechanism to secure against any leaks. The 20ml inks come in elaborately themed decorative square boxes with the ink colors reflected in the main color of the box. The mini globe 20ml ink bottle has a fairly small opening, so some fountain pens won’t be able to ink directly from the ink bottle. It can also be prone to being knocked over (which could be why the brand introduced “ink carriages”). The Ferris Wheel Press Ambrosia Indulgence ink is also available in the larger 85ml ink bottle OR as one of the brand’s new, smaller, 10ml ink pots.

Ferris Wheel Press Ambrosia Indulgence Ink Review: 1 Dip Test

Ferris Wheel Press King Midas Ambrosia Indulgence ink review: 1 dip test

During the 1-Dip Test, we dipped a J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen in FWP Ambrosia Indulgence ink once before writing, and it was able to write all three lines on paper with plenty of ink left over on the dip pen.

What’s the Ink’s Dry Time?

Ambrosia Indulgence Ink Review: Test Results, Dry time

During our review, Ferris Wheel Press Ambrosia Indulgence ink showed a dry time of approximately 5 seconds (impressive for a shimmer ink).

Did Ambrosia Indulgence Ink Bleed Through?

While using Rhodia paper during the course of the ink review, we didn’t see the ink bleeding through at all.

Did the Ferris Wheel Press Ambrosia Indulgence Ink Feather?

Ambrosia Ink Review: ink bottle, j herbin spiral glass dip pen, and takasago notebook

There was no feathering on Rhodia paper.

How Does Ambrosia Indulgence Ink Respond to Water?

Ferris Wheel Press Ambrosia Indulgence ink is not meant to be waterproof, but we like to put all our inks through a water test to see how well (or not) they withstand exposure to water. For the water test we let our ink sample dry for about 1 minute before we run a wet cotton swab over the sample to observe the effect. Here are the results we saw during our ink review water test:

  • Significant running of the ink
  • Color easily smeaered
  • Little line fading & feathering
  • Significant line distortion
  • No bleeding of the ink through the paper
  • Ink looks very pink after the water test

Does Ambrosia Indulgence Have Any Shading Traits?

FWP Ambrosia Indulgence ink review: ink swatch with cotton swab

This red inks shows a variety of hues from burgundy to pink to magenta. It writes a deep red with the glass dip pen and is very easy to read on paper.

Does Ambrosia Indulgence Have Any Sheen or Shimmer Traits?

Ferris Wheel Press Ambrosia Indulgence ink’s red shades are showcased by a gold shimmer. The gold shimmer was visible when writing with a glass dip pen, as well as when taking ink swatches with cotton swabs or paint brushes.

Final Conclusion: FWP Ambrosia Indulgence Ink Review

Ferris Wheel Press Ambrosia Indulgence Bijou
The perfect complement for FWP Ambrosia Indulgence ink – the Ambrosia Indulgence Bijou fountain pen.

After running all our standard ink review tests, I consider Ambrosia Indulgence to be a unique wine red ink that’s great as a fall-themed fountain pen ink. The visible golden shimmer in the ink adds flair and excitement to the dark ink taking what may otherwise be a fantastic everyday ink choice into the realm of special projects. The ink’s decorative box suits the brand and the theme of the ink, and the ink bottle, while possibly more likely to tip over than some other ink bottles out there…is adorable, and completely on brand for Ferris Wheel Press, AND made of very sturdy glass with a twist on/off cap designed specifically to prevent leaks. Look for your Ferris Wheel Press fountain pen inks at PenChalet.com.
