Caran d’Ache has been dedicated to creating the best fine writing instruments, since 1924. This year, they have released the new Caran d’Ache 849 Fountain Pen. The 849 Fountain Pen has been a top seller since it hit the shelves. So, we decided to test one for ourselves.

Appearance
Designed after the Caran d’Ache 849 Ballpoint Pen, the Caran d’Ache 849 Fountain Pen comes in a simple, but durable, red and white box. We used a Sapphire Blue 849 for this review, although there are a variety of other vibrant colors available. The barrel and cap are both hexagonal, which keeps the pen from rolling. Also, the grip section is smooth, rounded, and easy to hold. The cap comes with a firm metal clip, which increases the pen’s resistance to rolling as well.
Qualities
Coming in at $52.00 USD, the Caran d’Ache 849 Fountain Pen is very reasonably priced for the quality you get. The 849 Fountain Pen posts to approximately 7 inches by inserting the cap into the back end of the barrel. This unique method gives the pen the extra length needed for those of us with larger hands. Included with each pen is a Caran d’Ache standard international ink cartridge. If you want to use bottled inks, the Caran d’Ache 849 Fountain Pen uses a standard international ink converter.
Performance
Now for what we really care about – how does it write? The Sapphire Blue pen we used has a Western Fine nib. In this review, we paired this pen with the Iroshizuku Bottled Ink Yama-Budo, or Crimson Glory Vine. While writing, we experienced smooth writing with a great flow. The nib does not flex, so there is no line variation that you can see. This pen performs fantastically, and we would give it a 10/10.
Conclusion
Overall, the Caran d’Ache 849 Fountain Pen is perfect for its price. It is the perfect combination of being high quality and budget friendly. If you’ve been debating buying one, buy yours now. It’s worth it.

The Sapphire Blue is so reserved compared to the yellow, orange and pink colorways!
My favorite ink changes often, but right now it’s Diamine Steel Blue (which looks more like a teal blue than a steel blue to me, but it’s quite handsome!)

I’d love for you to review Pilot Iroshizuku inks
My current favorite ink is Bungbox Piano Mahogany. Something about the brown just says warm and snugly by a roaring fall fire.
