2022 Changes to the Pelikan Souverän Pens

Did you hear? 2022 is bringing changes to the Pelikan Souverän pens, one of the most popular pen designs from well known Pelikan Pens. So, if you are a Pelikan Souverän fountain pen or rollerball pen fan, you might appreciate a bit of a warning that the company announced in early 2022 that they will start using a different material for their Souverän Pen Collection.

The Pelikan Souverän’s New Material: 2022 Brings Change to Popular Pen Collection

Pelikan recently advised us that there would be a material change with their Souverän fountain pens including a change of design for the striped cellulose-acetate material on the popular Souverän. For technical reasons, Pelikan decided to switch from the previously used, slightly transparent material to a new, opaque material for the standard assortment of Souverän pens’ striped barrels. You can already see the “new” opaque material in the striped “upper parts” of the Souverän ballpoint pens and pencils, as well as in the Souverän rollerball pen barrels. Collectors will be excited that their complete sets of pencil, ballpoint, rollerball, and fountain pen will now match, but some huge fans of the Souverän are apprehensive about any change to their beloved pen’s design.

When Will the Pelikan Souverän Material Change Take Place?

The switch from the slightly transparent material to the opaque material already took place for the Souverän Black-Green, and Souverän Anthracite Stripes (Stresemann). The Souverän Black-Blue and Souverän Black-Red will be next to feature the new material.

If you aren’t already a big Pelikan Souverän fan, here’s a bit of a rundown. Pens in the Pelikan Souverän Collection are named using a letter followed by 3 or 4 numbers (and sometimes they end with one more (optional) letter). The first letter designates the type of writing instrument.

  • M = fountain pen
  • R = rollerball pen
  • K = ballpoint pen
  • D = mechanical pencil

The number that comes next generally indicates the overall size of the pen with larger numbers indicating a larger pen.

  • 200 = smallest
  • 600 = bigger than the 200
  • 800 = bigger than the 600
  • 1000 = largest

The next two digits in the pen’s name designate the pen’s trim color.

  • 00 = gold
  • 05 = chrome or silver

Sometimes the name is finished off with another letter, which designates an update to a previously released design or existing model. Check out the infographic above to see the different models side by side, as well as a comparison of the nibs each fountain pen features.
