Sunlit Jade Ink Review & Giveaway: Ferris Wheel Press Special Edition Lunar New Year Inks

Today’s Sunlit Jade ink review features one of Ferris Wheel Press’s Special Edition Lunar New Year Inks. Ferris Wheel Press is a fairly new brand for us here at Pen Chalet that we introduced in late 2021, and their products have been a tremendous hit with our loyal customers. In February 2022, Ferris Wheel Press released what they called their Lunar New Year Twin Jade inks; a beautiful pair of Jade fountain pen inks created in commemoration of the Lunar New Year. Fans of shimmer immediately fell in love with them.

It’s Time: Ferris Wheel Press Sunlit Jade Ink Review

For this Ferris Wheel Press Sunlit Jade ink review, we put the featured ink through our standard ink review tests, so you could get a better idea of how it might suit your writing style and your current ink collection.

Take a look at the results from the Ferris Wheel Press Sunlit Jade ink review.

Ink Review Testing Factors (to keep things scientific):

As usual, we used a French-made J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen (with a tip comparable to a medium-fine fountain pen nib) on French-made Rhodia dot pad paper. As always, we want to remind you that different papers or different nib sizes may produce different results!

What Sort of Ink Bottle Does Ferris Wheel Press Use?

Ferris Wheel Press Sunlit Jade ink comes in a 38ml unique jewelry-inspired heavy-weighted glass bottle. The outer packaging is very professional, and they include extra protection for the ink bottle inside the box. The bottle itself is display quality and collectible. Ink fans will also enjoy the easy to open, unique, and interesting brass lug nut cap with what Ferris Wheel Press describes as a secure locking mechanism to secure against any leaks. We’re also intrigued by the ability to set this 38ml ink bottle on its side (when capped, of course) and even stack it with other Ferris Wheel Press 38ml ink bottles.

How Much Do Ferris Wheel Press Inks Cost?

Ferris Wheel Press inks fall in the mid-range price in comparison to other fountain pen inks on the market. Look for the best prices at PenChalet.com.

How Did This Week’s Ink Fair in the 1-Dip Test?

We use the 1-dip test to see how far one dip can write on paper (dipping the pen into the ink only once).Sunlit Jade ink easily wrote across the paper on all three writing samples. In fact, the shimmer carried through the entire line of ink. (Using only one dip per writing sample “S” “X” and scribble lines, see the image above).

How Fast Does Sunlit Jade Ink Dry?

During our ink review, Sunlit Jade fountain pen ink showed a dry time of approximately 8-9 seconds with medium to high saturation. That’s slightly under what we would normally like to see for an everyday ink. This particular Ferris Wheel Press ink would likely be a better choice as a special ink for a project, journal or special note.

Does This Week’s Fountain Pen Ink Bleed Through?

We saw very slight bleeding during normal use on Rhodia dot pad paper. We did also see some additional slight bleeding during the heavy saturated cotton swab test (but only at the wettest points).

Was There Any Feathering During the Ferris Wheel Press Sunlit Jade Ink Review?

We saw no feathering during normal use, but we did see some very slight feathering during the water test (expected with a non-waterproof ink).

How Does the Ink Stand Up to Water?

Ferris Wheel Press Sunlit Jade ink is not meant to be waterproof, but we like to put all our inks through a water test to see how well (or not) they withstand exposure to water. For the water test we let our ink sample dry for about 3 minutes before we run a wet cotton swab over the sample to observe the effect. Here are the results we saw during our Sunlit Jade ink review water test:

  • Light color smearing (typical for any non-waterproof ink)
  • Lines very legible; almost no distortion at all
  • Almost zero additional feathering
  • Held up very well to the water test

Does Ferris Wheel Press Sunlit Jade Ink Have Good Shading / Shimmering Traits?

We saw nice shading possibilities with Sunlit Jade ink (depending on the pen, nib, and your penmanship). The ink’s golden shimmer was quite consistent, particularly with a larger nib or a brush-type pen.

Final Conclusion on Ferris Wheel Press Sunlit Jade Ink:

Ferris Wheel Press Sunlit Jade ink is a mid-range price ink with a very beautiful green/gold color with nice, consistent golden shimmer. This special edition ink comes from a new, but fun and interesting Canadian stationery company. The Ferris Wheel Press inks have fantastic packaging – very unique and interesting. Their 38ml jewelry inspired ink bottles are beautiful, very usable, and even stackable. Their inks are high performance inks safe for use with fountain pens, and this week’s ink, Sunlit Jade had a fairly reasonable dry time for a shimmer ink. As with any high saturation, shimmering or sheening ink, we recommend you periodically clean your pen (every couple weeks at a minimum) when using Ferris Wheel Press Sunlit Jade ink. For best results, use a pen cleaning solution like Pen Chalet Pen Flush to avoid unwanted clogging. Happy writing from Canada!
