Pilot Custom 74 Video Script

This is the Pilot Custom 74 Fountain Pen. It comes in a black cardboard box with a clear transparent window to view the pen, and the Pilot logo printed in silver on the top of the box. Inside, of course, we have the Pilot Custom 74 Fountain Pen. This is the blue version of the fountain pen. To demonstrate our pen, it comes with a transparent cap and barrel, so you can see the inside of the pen.

On the pen, it also has a smoke-colored cap on the bottom and top of the pen with a small chrome band that transitions between that smoke cap and the rest of the barrel or the cap of the pen. And then on the cap, that chrome ring, it transitions into the clip of the pen with the Pilot logo printed, or just Pilot printed on the top of the clip with a small ball at the end of the clip to get it in and out of your pocket. Then at the bottom of the cap, there's a large chrome band with the Custom 74 Pilot Made in Japan printed on that band. The cap on the pen unscrews. It, once again, has that smoke-colored grip section and a small chrome band transitioned between the grip section and the rest of the barrel, and then it's a chrome-colored nib with the Pilot logo on there, and the size of the nib and other engravings on the nib. It's a nice looking nib. The cap on the pen can be posted if you would like to, or you can write with that or post it, whichever way you would like to use this pen.

Now this is a cartridge-converter style pen, so included with the pen is an additional ink cartridge and a converter. Converter's already attached to the nib section. It is a piston style, so you simply push the top portion of that converter down once you put it into the ink, and then release that, and that will draw ink into that chamber. Or you can pull this converter out and use the ink cartridge that's included or another ink cartridge if you'd like to use a different color. But this is a great looking fountain pen. I really like the look of this. Pilot makes some great nibs. They're a Japanese company. Get your Pilot Custom 74 Fountain Pen at www.PenChalet.com!

Old script

This is the Pilot Custom 74 fountain pen with the box in which it comes in. It's a nice leather box, it's a nice soft leather. This particular pen is the clear demonstrator color. It comes in other colors such as blue, orange, smoke and violet.

This particular pen is from our own private collection so you can see inside the pen that it is already filled with ink. This pen has chrome accents. On the ring is etched "Custom 74" and "made in Japan" and on the clip is etched Pilot.

The cap unscrews from the pen. This particular pen is a cartridge converter pen. To change the cartridge or converter you simply unscrew the nib section from the barrel. This converter is unique because it is a piston style converter. To fill the ink you press this piston in to pull the ink into the converter. You can also pull this converter out and replace it with a cartridge.

On the nib itself is etched Pilot and some other decorative things on it. It is a nice nib. It is actually a gold nib and it is great for the price. This is a great pen for the value. Get yours today at PenChalet.com

To be honest, I wasn't expecting to love it. I thought it would be perfectly adequate, and fill a void. Perhaps a pen to rotate out at a later date once I found a truly spectacular orange pen.

However, once it arrived and I'd inked it — with Diamine Pansy — I was pleasantly surprised. And with each consecutive use, I like it better. I have it with a Fine nib, and it glides across paper in the most delightful way. It approaches TWSBI 580 nibs in wetness.

I even found myself reluctant to clean it out at the end of the week. I wanted to keep it inked, to keep using it, which almost never happens. I'm usually happy enough to use whatever pens I have for the next week that I don't mind putting away my pens from the previous week. It's a testament to how much I enjoy using the Custom 74.

If you like feedbacky nibs, the Custom 74 is not for you. But if you like buttery smooth nibs, I highly recommend it. And this is coming from someone who prioritizes pen appearance over function. While the Custom 74 isn't the most beautiful pen in the world, its function makes it divine. I'm definitely happy I bought it. I wouldn't even rule out the possibility of another in the future, maybe with an Extra Fine nib.

My top 2 pen. Very refined. Medium nib produces a good wet line and with a fast drying ink can we everyday writer. But Fine nib even better. Even with wet inks writes so well to be everyday pen.
Well worth the money especially the Merlot color pen.
Pair the Merlot one with Iroshizuku Tsutsuji- match made in heaven.

These pens are not exactly cheap, but Pen Chalet has a great price. They are easy to use, write beautifully and are one of the most reliable pen models I have ever had. I have two! Pick your color and you are ready to write! I highly recommend the medium nib.

Oh Pen Chalet - you just made my day! I received my Custom 74 Teal (B) so quickly and the ink sample you sent matches it perfectly. I love it. This is my first Custom 74. I thought it might be a bit boring, but it's not. It's a very handsome pen and writes beautifully right out of the box - with its matching ink :) I think this pen lives up to its fine reputation and I'm glad I purchased it. Thanks!

My go to pen for all note taking, letter writing, journaling tasks. Writes beautiful and has an exceptional balanced feel. The ink flow is super consistent as well.

I was a bit disappointed with this pen. I initially bought a Medium Nib. It was very smooth but much too wet for the note taking for which I needed it. I was expecting a "finer/dryer" medium nib like my Sailor pens. Ink flow reminded me of my medium point Pelikans. So, I exchanged the pen for a Fine Point Nib. The Fine point I have is very scratchy and the ink flow was almost too dry. Some strokes had predictable skips in them. Solved the ink flow problem by removing nib to clean it. However, nib is still incredibly rough compared to the medium point I initially received. It is even rougher than my Pelikan fine steel nibs. However, the Fine nib produces the line width which I need for note taking on lower grades of paper. Typically I use Ampad Gold Fiber Pads, which are probably not meant for fountain pens. On the other hand, the Medium point version of this pen is an excellent value if you don't mind a wet medium nib.
