Comparing the Pilot Custom 823 & the Pilot Custom 74

When weighing the Pilot Custom 823 against the Pilot Custom 74, a few key differences set them apart.

Ink Capacity and Filling System:

  • Pilot Custom 823: This pen features an impressive vacuum filling system, which allows for a larger ink reservoir. It’s perfect for those who do extensive writing without wanting to refill often.
  • Pilot Custom 74: On the other hand, the Custom 74 uses a cartridge/converter system. While this makes it easier to switch ink colors, it doesn’t hold as much ink as the 823.

Design and Feel:

  • Pilot Custom 823: Crafted with a slightly larger and more robust build, the 823 offers a solid, substantial feel that many users find more comfortable for extended writing sessions.
  • Pilot Custom 74: The 74 is somewhat lighter and slimmer, making it a great choice for those who prefer a pen with a more nimble and delicate touch.

Writing Experience:

  • Pilot Custom 823: Known for its smooth and consistent ink flow, the 823 provides a luxurious writing experience, ideal for fine and fastidious script.
  • Pilot Custom 74: While also delivering smooth writing, the 74 offers a bit more feedback, which can be appealing to those who enjoy a tactile sense of connection with the paper.
In summary, if you are looking for a pen with high ink capacity and a robust build, the Pilot Custom 823 is an excellent choice. If you prefer a lighter pen with easier ink changes, the Pilot Custom 74 might suit your needs better. Both pens are undeniably exceptional, tailored to different writing styles and preferences.

Basic Maintenance

To ensure the Pilot Custom 823 remains in top condition for years, regular maintenance is essential. Start by performing a thorough cleaning after every few ink refills. Flushing the pen with lukewarm water helps remove any ink residue, preventing clogs and ensuring smooth writing. It’s also important to disassemble the pen as per the manufacturer’s instructions to clean all parts effectively. Allow all components to dry completely before reassembling to avoid any moisture-related issues. Lastly, store the pen in a cool, dry place to prevent any potential damage from environmental factors. Following these steps will keep your Pilot Custom 823 functioning impeccably, ready for your next moment of inspiration.

Pilot Custom 823 Collection Video Script

This is the Pilot Custom 823 fountain pen. It comes in a large, black cardboard box. It has a faux leather texture to it, with the Pilot logo embossed in gold on the top of the box. Included with the pen is the informational instruction and use and care guide for the pen, as well as a bottle of Pilot blue ink.

Then of course, we have the Pilot Custom 823 fountain pen. This is the amber color. It comes with a clear translucent cap and barrel, and a brown cap or end on both ends of the pen, on both the barrel and the cap of the pen. That black cap is separated with a gold band. You can see inside the center chamber of the piston filler of the pen where the ink sits.

At the bottom of the cap we have a nice, thick gold band with a thinner gold band. Engraved on that, we have some stars with "Pilot", "Made in Japan," and "Custom 823". Then it has a gold clip with Pilot engraved at the top of the clip; a gold band at the top separating that amber color, translucent cap, with the brown color cap at the end. The cap on the pen unscrews. You can post the cap.

It has a gold nib. On that nib is engraved "Pilot", and some other decorations. To change the ink on this pen, it's a piston fill, so we simply unscrew the end of the pen to dry the piston and fill the ink on the pen.

It's a sharp looking pen. Pilot makes some great writing instruments; they have some great nibs. Get your Pilot Custom 823 fountain pen at PenChalet.com

I love Pilot pens and this beauty has captured my heart. I love the nib and flow. The ink capacity as an EDC would last me over 2 weeks. After filling if you screw the piston all the way in you’ll run dry quickly because you’ve sealed off the ink from the section, so this would be helpful with rapidly changing barometric pressure. But if you leave the piston cap pulled back a little bit the nib remains wet and I can write immediately even with the pen unused for (so far) two weeks.

The fine nib writes smoothly. Very thin line, without being scratchy. My best writing pen so far.

This was a grail pen for me and I have not been disappointed with any aspect of the pen. It has been in continuous use for the past 9 months and I have not put it away since I received it. I ordered the amber in the fine nib which is relatively smooth, has good flow with some slight feedback which I enjoy. The vac filler is convenient to use and it holds a large volume of ink over 2 ml. I am now considering the smoke with a medium nib to add to my collection. Great pen and no regrets with my purchase.

This pen is awesome. I wish I would have bought this sooner. It writes like a dream. It is one of the smoothest writing pens I own - very smooth. And I've only tried it with the ink that came with it. This will definitely be in the daily rotation. I may be buying another one I like this so much.

One of the best pens ever made, what else can I say? Mine is Broad, perfect for 7mm lined paper. Only thing is you need write with the cap off to prevent starvation. I would rather have one of these than multiple cheap feeling and poorly made TWSBI's.

Lovely pen, classic style. Good weight and balance (unposted) in the hand. The only gripe I have is forgetting the Japanese pen widths are narrower than elsewhere. I could happily have used a broad.

The Custom 823 is one of those legendary pens that people rave and rave about. After finally getting this one (Amber, with a fine nib) in hand, I can see why.

The vacuum-filling mechanism is fun, and this thing holds a huge amount of ink. (It's going to take me forever to write it dry with this fine nib.) I like that the ink chamber seals off - I've already done a bit of traveling with it, and I've had no problems whatsoever. It feels sturdy and substantial in the hand, with a good amount of heft but not too much. (Unposted, the balance for me is perfect; posted, it's a little back-heavy, and I can take it or leave it.) The brown and gold are very pleasant to my eye and make every session with them a little more enjoyable.

The real star of this show, though, is the big no. 15 gold nib. This thing writes perfectly, every single time, from the very first fill. I just never have to worry about it. I don't have to adjust my writing angle for a "sweet spot" or anything like that. It almost feels, well, custom-made for me. It's a Japanese fine, for sure, very thin, which means there's a bit of feedback, but that's to be expected - this is about as smooth as a nib this fine can be.

In terms of writing performance and aesthetic quality, the 823 is pretty darn close to perfect in my view. If you can swing it, I highly recommend it.

The Pilot Custom 823 meets all of my expectations. I purchased the Amber with a fine nib. Initially had some feedback, but has gotten smoother over a short period of time. It has already reached the "must be replaced" status if it is every broken, lost or stolen!
