All About the Ink Maker: Sailor

Even though Sailor is a well known Japanese pen and ink company and all their inks are made in Japan, not all of them are available in Japan. Some Sailor fountain pen inks are ONLY available in the international market. Sailor currently has six different ink series available in the USA:

Jentle Ink Series

Basic Ink Series

Shikori Ink Series

Pigmented Ink Series

Manyo Ink Series

All About This Week’s Chosen Inks’ Ink Series: Sailor Manyo Ink Series

This week’s featured ink is included in an ink series named after a piece of ancient Japanese culture: the Japanese Manyoshu. The Japanese Manyoshu is an ancient compilation of Japanese poems that include frequent mentions of numerous flowers popular in the Japanese culture. Sailor created the Manyo ink series around the mentions of the various popular flowers, creating eight different inks based on different flowers featured in ancient poetry.

All About This Week’s Chosen Ink: Sailor Manyo Yomogi

Sailor Manyo Yomogi Fountain Pen Ink Review:

During this week’s ink review, we put Sailor’s Manyo Yomogi to the test searching for the different characteristics and traits that fountain pen lovers look for when they’re seeking a new ink for their favorite pens. Before you add Sailor’s Yomogi ink to your fountain pen ink collection, read about the traits and characteristics we saw during the review.

Ink Review Testing Factors (to keep things scientific):

We like to present a fair representation of the fountain pen inks we review, so we’ll always include a section identifying other products used during the review alongside the week’s featured ink. Think of our paper and pen as the “controls” in our review/experiment. For our review of Sailor Manyo Yomogi fountain pen ink, we used a J Herbin spiral glass dip pen (with a tip similar to a fine-medium fountain pen nib) on Rhodia dot pad paper

The results we saw came during the use described above. Remember that different papers and nib sizes may produce different results!

What Sort of Ink Bottle Does Sailor Use?

Sailor Manyo Yomogi is a bottled fountain pen ink that comes in Sailor’s new square ink well – a heavy-weighted 50 ml. bottle. We found the packaging and label to be simple, but elegant.

How Much Does Sailor Manyo Yomogi Ink Cost?

Sailor Manyo Yomogi is a mid-range price fountain pen ink that is available from Pen Chalet at a discounted price.

How Fast Does Yomogi Fountain Pen Ink Dry?

Sailor Manyo Yomogi fountain pen ink had a dry time of approximately 7-8 seconds with medium saturation. We consider any dry time under 10 seconds to be reasonably quick, and appropriate for daily use, so we would recommend Yomogi as an everyday ink.

Does Sailor Manyo Yomogi Ink Bleed Through?

During normal use of Yomogi fountain pen ink, we saw no bleeding. We did see some very slight bleeding during the heavy saturated cotton swab test, but it was only at the most saturated points, which were really wet.

Was There Any Feathering While Using Sailor Manyo Yomogi Fountain Pen Ink?

During normal use, we saw no feathering. We did see some slight feathering during the water test, though.

How Does Sailor Manyo Yomogi Ink Stand Up to Water?

While this week’s ink is not a waterproof fountain pen ink, we always include a water test in the review. (For the water test, we let an ink sample dry for about 3 minutes before running a wet cotton swab over the sample). The water test resulted in significant color smearing. This is completely expected with any dye-based ink. The lines were still legible, and we saw some slight feathering.

Does Sailor Manyo Yomogi Fountain Pen Ink Have Good Shading Traits?

We saw some really nice shading traits and are confident you will see them too if you have a nib that allows good ink flow variation. We recommend trying the stub or italic nib, if that’s what you’re looking to accomplish. Sailor Manyo Yomogi fountain pen ink presented in a range from dark blue teal (leaning more towards blue rather than green-teal) to a lighter turquoise blue shade.

Final Conclusion on Sailor Manyo Yomogi Ink:

Manyo Yomogi fountain pen ink is a high performance, mid-range price ink from a well-regarded, historic Japanese pen an ink company. The beautiful, blue-based, dark teal color is enough to draw many fountain pen users, but it also offers a reasonable dry time (making it appropriate for everyday use), is easy to clean, and comes in a lovely and functional 50 ml. display quality bottle.

We also appreciate the cultural meaning that creates the foundation for Sailor’s Manyo series – with each of the 8 color options representing flowers featured in the ancient poetry compilation, the Japanese Manyoshu. The Sailor Manyo series includes eight ink colors:

  • Akebi – This Manyo ink brings a strong, bright pink ink color to the group.
  • Haha – A popular Manyo ink series choice for fountain pen enthusiasts, Sailor Manyo Haha is a light blue you might reminiscent of the sky on clear days.
  • Kikyou – This is another shade of blue, but a darker shade – turquoise with underlying gray tones.
  • Kuzu – This ink color might be described as a deep, deep pink color, but it also has a moody maroon tone.
  • Nekoyanagi – This light purple ink color is lovely and full of light.
  • Sumire – This Sailor Manyo ink color is what we would refer to as a bright blue.
  • Yamabuki – This yellow fountain pen ink is a customer favorite.
  • Yomogi – And Yomogi is this week’s featured ink, rounding out the Manyo ink series of eight.

While this well-known Japanese company still makes all their inks in Japan, you don’t typically seek to buy Sailor inks in Japan. Look for them in the International (non-Japanese) market. Happy writing from Japan!

I’m finding my current favorite ink to be Pilot Blue Black, at least for normal work, so this might be a good one to try!
