About the Sailor Manyo (50ml)
The Sailor Manyo fountain pen ink comes from an abbreviation of the Japanese word "Manyosyu" indicating people of ranks. Manyosyu is often regarded in Japan as a true expression of the Japanese spirit. The themes of the poems relate to celebrations, love, elegies, family matters, nature and so on with flowers being especially relevant. Sailor has therefore chosen colors based on various flowers for the Manyo fountain pen inks.
4 additional ink colors are scheduled for release in June 2022. Each of the 4 new colors will be Dual Shading inks that create incredible depth in writing, calligraphy, and art. Availability of the new dual-shading inks is anticipated for late June/early July 2022.

Lovely colors; the dual shaders are great for art work.
The Shirakashi is beautiful, but has a somewhat unpleasant iodor.

Sailor Manyo Fuji is the kind of ink that surprises you with its quiet beauty. At first glance, it’s a soft periwinkle-purple—a color that immediately reminded me of blooming wisteria or a misty twilight sky—but as you write with it, more complexity starts to show.
There’s a gentle balance of blue and purple in the base tone, and under the right conditions (especially on Tomoe River or other high-sheen paper), I noticed a touch of greenish-gold sheen and even some delicate shading that gives it real character. It’s not flashy, but it’s far from flat. It feels peaceful, elegant, and contemplative—like its namesake, Mt. Fuji.
I tested it in my Monteverde MP1 OmniFlex, and it performed flawlessly. The flow is slightly on the wet side, which works well with a flex nib, giving soft gradients and clean lines without any feathering or bleed-through. It’s a very well-behaved ink, true to Sailor’s reputation.
Dry time is reasonable—10 to 12 seconds on good paper, a little faster on standard notebook stock. I didn’t notice any issues with smudging or ghosting. And despite the softness of the color, it’s still readable enough for journaling, letter writing, or headers in planners.
The bottle is the classic Sailor Manyo 50ml glass—simple, elegant, and easy to fill from. The Manyo line overall is beautifully curated, and Fuji is a standout if you appreciate poetic, understated inks.
Final thoughts:
Fuji is one of those inks that calms you down the moment it hits the page. If you're drawn to soft purples, want something different from typical blue or violet inks, or just enjoy inks with a gentle soul, this one is absolutely worth trying.

Sailor manyo kakitsubata is the perfect color. A nice, saturated blue. Works perfectly in every pen I’ve used.

I like the color but it lacks the kind of saturation I prefer. Thus, it's on the dry side.

I might be biased because I greatly enjoy grey and green and purple, and this dual-shader mixes all those together in a fun way. In general, Sailor Manyo inks may be one of the best ink values out there, and Ayame works great for me - it’s also dark enough to read easily in thinner nibs, which is important to me, as well (my handwriting tends toward the smaller side).

I have refilled the pen twice with this Sailor ink and I like the Manyo Kuzu color. I think the standard black ink from Mont Blanc will sit idle for a while.

FAQs about the Sailor Manyo (50ml)
What is Sailor Manyo ink and why is it popular?
Sailor Manyo is a premium, dye-based ink series inspired by flowers from the Manyoshu anthology. It’s loved for complex colors with expressive shading, occasional sheen, and excellent everyday behavior in fountain pens.
What bottle sizes does Manyo come in?
Most colors are offered in ~50 mL glass bottles. Some retailers also carry smaller bottles or special sets depending on the release.
Is Sailor Manyo safe for all fountain pens?
Yes—Manyo inks are dye-based and generally well-behaved. As with any ink, avoid letting it dry out in the pen and flush periodically to maintain consistent flow.
Are Manyo inks waterproof or archival?
Most Manyo inks are not fully waterproof or archival. They’re designed for color nuance and smooth writing. If permanence is critical, test first or choose a dedicated permanent ink line.
Do Manyo inks shade or sheen?
Many colors offer pronounced shading and some show sheen on coated papers with wetter nibs. Results vary by color, nib width, paper, and ink laydown.
What paper and nib sizes work best with Manyo inks?
For maximum shading/sheen, use fountain-pen-friendly or coated paper with medium–broad or wetter nibs. For faster dry times, choose finer nibs and less-coated paper.
Can I mix Manyo inks to create custom colors?
Mixing within dye-based Manyo colors is generally fine—test small amounts in a separate vial first. Avoid mixing with pigmented, iron-gall, or other chemistry-different inks.
How often should I clean my pen when using Manyo ink?
With regular use, a water flush every 2–4 weeks is typical. When changing colors, flush until clear. Use a pen-safe flush if flow feels sluggish; avoid hot water or alcohol.
Will Manyo inks stain transparent (demonstrator) pens?
Staining is uncommon but possible with any bright dye. Regular cleaning minimizes tinting; a mild pen flush usually removes residual color from converters and feeds.
Which Manyo colors are frequently discussed by writers?
Blues, teals, violets, and earthy greens in the series often get attention for multi-tonal shading. Availability and favorites vary by region and batch.
Can I use Manyo inks with converters and piston fillers?
Yes. Fill from the bottle using your pen’s compatible converter or piston mechanism. Rinse converters periodically to keep seals and flow in good shape.
How should I store Manyo ink and how long will it last?
Store bottles upright, tightly capped, away from heat and sunlight. Kept clean and sealed, bottles remain usable for years. If you notice odor, sludge, or mold, discontinue use.
Any tips for travel or temperature changes with Manyo ink?
When flying, keep pens full or empty and store nib-up. Avoid leaving bottles/pens in hot cars or freezing conditions; extreme temperatures can cause leaks or performance changes.
What if my pen hard-starts or feels dry with a Manyo color?
Flush to clear residues, try a different paper, and ensure the cap seals well. Switching to a slightly wetter nib or adjusting the converter’s fill can also improve flow.
