Details of the Pelikan Souveran Fountain Pen Infographic

Trying to choose the right Pelikan Souveran fountain pen can be confusing. What is the difference between an M200 and an M400? What does all those digits in the Pelikan model numbers mean anyway? We have created the Pelikan Souveran Fountain Pen Infographic to shed some light and hopefully make choosing the right Pelikan Souveran fountain pen easier.

Pelikan Souveran Model Digitry

First let’s talk about the Model number digits and what they mean. The Pelikan Souveran pens are designated with an alphabetic starting digit followed by 3 or 4 numerical digits and then an optional alphabetic digit.

The first digit designates the type of writing instrument. M means it is a fountain pen, R is a rollerball pen, K is for a ballpoint pen and D is a mechanical pencil.

The first and sometimes second numeric digits represent the model of the Pelkan Souveran. Typically the larger the number the bigger the pen. For instance a 200 pen is smaller in size than a 600 or 800. For larger pens a 10 is used making the model number a 1000.

The next two digits represent the trim color on the pen. For gold trim the digits will be 00 and for chrome or silver trim it’s 05. If the pen is something different it is a special edition pen like the Pelikan M640 Mount  Everest ballpoint pen.

The last digit is alphabetic and not always present. It designates a new design or update on and existing model such as the Pelikan M101N Tortoise Shell Red Fountain Pen.

The Pelikan Souveran Fountain Pen Infographic next displays the size and weight of the most common Pelikan Souveran fountain pens with each pen displayed next to each other. This display of the pens allows you to see the relative size of each model and what makes each model unique.

This does enlighten me somewhat especially those letters like NN. I recently asked a fellow pen enthusiast about them and he wasn’t that clear on the usage of them.
