Duppa was a close friend of one of the city’s founding fathers, Jack Swilling, and Duppa suggested Phoenix. (This seems like an obviously suitable choice since Phoenix summers aren’t dissimilar to the magical Phoenix wrapped in flames). However, Duppa recommended the name not because the heat of a Phoenix summer can make you feel like you’re wrapped up in magical Phoenix fire, but because he could envision the new life the founders of the city were bringing to the region – just like the mythical Phoenix rises from the ashes to a new life.
