Ink Review Testing Factors (to keep things scientific):

As usual, we used a French-made J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen (with a tip comparable to a medium-fine fountain pen nib) on Rhodia bloc pad paper. As always, we want to remind you that different papers or different nib sizes may produce different results!

What Sort of Ink Bottle Does Ferris Wheel Press Use?

The Ferris Wheel Press Moonlit Jade ink packaging and ink bottle.

Ferris Wheel Press Moonlit Jade ink comes in a 38ml unique jewelry-inspired heavy-weighted glass bottle. The outer packaging is completely gorgeous, and very professional. The Ferris Wheel Press products are heavily branded and themed – one of the aspects of the ink that Ferris Wheel Press fans adore. The ink’s packaging also includes extra protection for the ink bottle inside the box. The bottle itself is display quality and collectible. Ink fans will also enjoy the easy to open, unique, and interesting brass lug nut cap with what Ferris Wheel Press describes as a secure locking mechanism to secure against any leaks. We’re also intrigued by the ability to set this 38ml ink bottle on its side (when capped, of course) and even stack it with other Ferris Wheel Press 38ml ink bottles.

How Much Do Ferris Wheel Press Inks Cost?

Ferris Wheel Press inks fall in the mid-range price in comparison to other fountain pen inks on the market. Look for the best prices at PenChalet.com.

How Did This Week’s Ink Fair in the 1-Dip Test?

We use the 1-dip test to see how far one dip can write on paper (dipping the pen into the ink only once). Moonlit Jade ink easily wrote across the paper on all three writing samples. We also noted that the shimmer carried through the entire line of ink. (Using only one dip per writing sample “S” “X” and scribble lines, see the image above).

How Fast Does Moonlit Jade Ink Dry?

During our ink review, Moonlit Jade fountain pen ink showed a dry time of approximately 6-7 seconds with medium to high saturation. The ink’s dry time falls within the range we’d consider a good choice for an everyday ink, but it’s also a shimmer ink, so some would enjoy it more as an ink to use for special projects.

Does This Week’s Fountain Pen Ink Bleed Through?

We saw very slight bleeding during normal use and some additional slight bleeding during the heavy saturated cotton swab test (but only at the wettest points).

Was There Any Feathering During the Ferris Wheel Press Moonlit Jade Ink Review?

We saw no feathering during normal use, but we did see some very slight feathering during the water test (and since this is not a waterproof ink, that’s to be expected).

How Does the Ink Stand Up to Water?

Ferris Wheel Press Moonlit Jade ink is not meant to be waterproof, but we like to put all our inks through a water test to see how well (or not) they withstand exposure to water. For the water test we let our ink sample dry for about 3 minutes before we run a wet cotton swab over the sample to observe the effect. Here are the results we saw during our Moonlit Jade ink review water test:

  • Light color smearing (typical for any non-waterproof ink)
  • Almost no distortion of the lines – remained very legible
  • Almost no additional feathering
  • Basically held up quite well to the water test as a non-waterproof ink

Does Ferris Wheel Press Moonlit Jade Ink Have Good Shading / Shimmering Traits?

We saw nice shading possibilities with Moonlit Jade ink (depending on the pen, nib, and your penmanship). The ink’s silver shimmer was pretty consistent, especially if you choose to use a large nib or a brush type pen.

Final Conclusion on Ferris Wheel Press Moonlit Jade Ink:

Ferris Wheel Press Moonlit Jade ink is a mid-range price ink with a very beautiful green/silver color that has a nice, consistent silver shimmer. This special edition ink comes from a new, but fun and interesting Canadian stationery company. The Ferris Wheel Press inks are known for their fantastic packaging. Their 38ml jewelry inspired ink bottles are beautiful, very usable (and even stackable). The Ferris Wheel Press inks are high performance inks safe for use with fountain pens, and this week’s ink, Moonlit Jade had a fairly reasonable dry time for a shimmer ink (6-7 seconds). As with any high saturation, shimmering or sheening ink, we recommend you periodically clean your pen (every couple weeks at a minimum) when using Ferris Wheel Press Moonlit Jade ink. For best results, use a pen cleaning solution like Pen Chalet Pen Flush to avoid unwanted clogging. Happy writing from Canada!
