The Brand: Who Made This Week’s Featured Ink?

Ferris Wheel Press is a Canadian pen and ink maker on a mission to help all of us “Fall in Love with Writing Again™.” The Markham, Ontario-based stationery company has been on their worthy mission for over a decade, and they’ve developed a beautiful product line full of innovative design and branding ideas topped with a refined presentation style.

The Ink Series: Ferris Wheel Press Print Shoppe Collection

The Ferris Wheel Press Print Shoppe Collection 38ml inks bring together three generations through the love for printmaking. As their print shop hums to life each day, ink-stained paws set lead type, pressing stories into paper with each pass of grey ink on the roller. Let the rhythmic rat-tat-tat and the scent of ink and grit inspire your customers’ next artistic endeavor. This week’s ink is one of 3 inks in the Print Shoppe Collection:

  1. Leadcast Letters: A cozy, warm mid-grey ink that gives off earthy vibes.
  2. Bearrington Black: Deep, dark, moody, cool black ink.
  3. Russet Typecase: A nostalgic, warm sepia brown ink.

Let’s get to know Russet Typecase ink a little better!

Today’s Ink: Ferris Wheel Press Russet Typecase Ink

Ferris Wheel Press’s Russet Typecase ink is a nostalgic, warm sepia brown. A bonus you’ll discover is that this ink makes a great fall color (if you feel like embracing the seasons). The toasty orange-brown color brings to mind my Mama’s freshly baked pumpkin pie.

What Sort of Ink Bottle Does Ferris Wheel Press Use?

The Ferris Wheel Press ink bottle is just as beautiful as the inks it contains. The inks are packaged inside detailed cardboard boxes with custom art for each ink collection. The color and color name are both printed on the box. The Ferris Wheel Press Russet Typecase ink is one of their 38ml everyday fountain pen inks in the unique 38ml jewelry-inspired ink glass ink bottle. The ink bottle is circular with two flat sides. One side features the Ferris Wheel Press logo in gold, and the other side features a large sticker (in the color of the ink) with the name of the ink printed on the sticker. The twist-off gold cap is designed to look like a large bolt (in line with the overall Ferris Wheel Press branding).

Since Russet Typecase is one of their more recently released inks, it includes the clear plastic insert covering the top of the ink inside the closed cap (to provide additional protection against ink leaks). While the 38ml ink bottle can be susceptible to “tipping,” it’s beautiful and also offers the benefit of being stackable. If you’re lucky, you may also have one of Ferris Wheel Press’s ink carriages that provides a decorative resting spot for your ink bottle (and minimizes the risk of tipping).

How Did This Week’s Ink Fair in the 1-Dip Test?

We did a 1-Dip Test with Russet Typecase ink, and the ink was able to all three lines on paper with plenty of ink left over on dip pen.

What’s Russet Typecase Ink’s Dry Time?

Ferris Wheel Press Russet Typecase ink review: Dry Time, 5 seconds

During our Russet Typecase ink review, the ink showed an approximate 5 second dry time.

How Does the Ink Respond to Water?

We also put the ink through our typical water test (even though it doesn’t claim to be waterproof). We put down a writing sample for the water test, let it dry for a minute, and then ran a wet cotton swab over the writing to see how the ink responded to water. Here’s what we saw:

  • Practically no running
  • No bleeding
  • No feathering
  • Very slight line distortion
  • Lines were still distinct and visible after the water test

In short, the Ferris Wheel Press Russet Typecase ink holds up very well to water.

Does Ferris Wheel Press Russet Typecase Ink Have Any Good Shading Traits?

Russet Typecase ink swatch and writing sample

The Russet Typecase ink is a warm sepia brown that can look orange when writing with a pen but shows up significantly more sepia with cotton swab tests. However, if you’re looking for shading, we didn’t notice much. The ink seems to dry with fairly even shades.

Does Russet Typecase Ink Have Any Sheening or Shimmering Traits?

The ink didn’t show any sheen or shimmer properties (if yours does…you may have picked up the wrong bottle of ink).

Final Conclusion: Ferris Wheel Press Russet Typecase Ink Review

In conclusion, Russet Typecase is a good everyday ink – solid choice for journaling, calligraphy, sketching, etc. since it offers smooth, consistent flow and coloring. The warm, orange-sepia color is the perfect choice for this time of year, and it shows up well on paper. It showed a great dry time, and also held up well to water exposure, so it’s a sturdy, dependable choice that comes in a stunning presentation that’s just what you all love about Ferris Wheel Press.
