All About the Ink Maker: Monteverde

Monteverde is a well-known and well-regarded brand that offers over 50 colors of fountain pen inks, all made in Europe. All Monteverde fountain pen inks use ITF Technology. ITF Technology improves ink flow quality, extends the amount of time an inked fountain pen can stay uncapped, and lubricates the pen’s feeding system to protect against clogging. For this week’s ink review and giveaway, we’ll focus on an ink from Monteverde’s Emotions Series. Other Monteverde Ink Series include:

  • Noir (black-based) Series
  • Gemstone Series
  • Core Series
  • Sweet Life Series (this one is the newest)

All About the Ink Series: Monteverde Emotion Ink Series

There are ten ink colors in Monteverde’s Emotion Series in addition to this week’s featured ink, Wisdom Purple. This themed ink series features inks representing different emotions: Wisdom Purple, Kindness Pink, Confidence Blue, Gratitude Magenta, Love Red, Motivation Orange, Passion Burgundy, Peace Blue, Hope Green, and Joy Sepia.

All About This Week’s Chosen Ink: Monteverde Emotions Wisdom Purple Ink

Wisdom Purple fountain pen ink is one of the ten colors in the Monteverde Emotions ink series. This week’s ink is a beautiful, dark mountain purple ink color; not a vibrant purple, but a “royal” purple color, it shows up very dark on paper, almost appearing black.

It’s Time: Monteverde Emotion Ink Wisdom Purple Review

We love doing ink reviews, and who doesn’t love a giveaway? And this week’s review of Monteverde Wisdom Purple was no different. We always enjoy using Monteverde inks and when we’ve got a themed set on our hands, it just adds to the fun, so putting Wisdom Purple to the test didn’t put us out at all. We conducted the typical tests that help us identify the characteristics fountain pen users want to know before deciding to purchase a specific ink. To put it simply, if you’re looking for enhanced wisdom and a greater understanding of this particular Monteverde Emotions Series ink, you’re about to get exactly what you need.

Ink Review Testing Factors (to keep things scientific):

When testing a fountain pen ink for review, we can’t do it in a bubble, but to keep things on the up and up, we do like to be very clear about what products were used alongside each week’s featured ink. That’s why you can always find accompanying products used for each week’s ink review here in the testing factors section of the review. While reviewing Monteverde Wisdom Purple fountain pen ink, we used a J Herbin spiral glass dip pen (which has a tip similar to a fine-medium fountain pen nib) on Rhodia dot pad paper.

The results we discuss below came while using this week’s ink with the pen/paper described above. Always remember that different papers and nib sizes may produce different results.

What Sort of Ink Bottle Does Monteverde Use?

Monteverde Emotions Wisdom Purple ink comes in two sizes. You can find Wisdom Purple in a small 30 ml. square glass bottle or a larger standard Monteverde 90 ml. glass bottle. Monteverde’s packaging makes it very clear what color ink is included with a large sticker listing showing the color and listing the name of the ink. Inks come in the standard Monteverde box.

How Much Does Monteverde Wisdom Purple Ink Cost?

Since Monteverde Wisdom Purple ink is available in 2 sizes, the price varies, but both sizes offer a very economical price for the high quality Monteverde ink. It’s a great value fountain pen ink purchase, especially with the discounted pricing available at Pen Chalet.

How Fast Does Monteverde Wisdom Purple Ink Dry?

Monteverde Wisdom Purple fountain pen ink had a dry time of approximately 7-8 seconds. This is a reasonably quick dry time; making Wisdom Purple appropriate for everyday use. (At Pen Chalet, we generally consider any dry time under 10 seconds to be reasonably quick, and appropriate for daily use).

Does Monteverde Wisdom Purple Ink Bleed Through?

We saw zero bleeding during normal use of Wisdom Purple fountain pen ink, and zero bleeding during the heavy saturated cotton swab test (even at the wettest points).

Was There Any Feathering While Using Monteverde Wisdom Purple Ink?

We saw no feathering during normal use, but we did see some feathering during the water test.

How Does Monteverde Emotion Wisdom Purple Ink Stand Up to Water?

This week’s ink is not a waterproof fountain pen ink, but we always include a water test in the review. (For the water test, we let an ink sample dry for about 3 minutes before running a wet cotton swab over the sample). During the water test of Monteverde Wisdom Purple ink we saw significant color smearing when wet in both purple and pink colors. The lines were legible, but the wettest points were somewhat distorted.

Does Monteverde Emotion Wisdom Purple Ink Have Good Shading Traits?

Wisdom Purple ink didn’t appear to have a lot of shading traits as it is a very dark ink with medium saturation. If using a nib that allows ink flow variation like a stub or italic nib, you may see some color variation, but not a lot.

Final Conclusion on Monteverde Wisdom Purple Ink:

This week’s fountain pen ink is a very economical fountain pen ink purchase offering great value when you consider both quality and quantity for the price. Additionally, fountain pen users have two different size and price options, which is always helpful. Monteverde continues to produce very high quality inks and is well-regarded throughout the fountain pen and ink industry. All Monteverde inks are made in Europe using ITF Technology that produces inks with great flow that are actually “good” for your fountain pen.

Wisdom Purple is a nice dark, purple color that shows up very dark on paper, but can still function as an everyday ink. If you’re looking for a purple bordering on black that you can use on an everyday basis, and that allows you to leave your fountain pen uncapped for longer periods of time without clogging issues, you’ve found your new ink. So now you know all about Monteverde’s Wisdom Purple ink from the Emotions Ink Series. But in the vein of being wise we’ll quote Albert Einstein, “Any fool can know. The point is to understand.” Get your hands on a bottle today so you can fully understand the joy of a great Monteverde fountain pen ink. Happy Writing from Europe!

I like Pilot black. It’s boring and well-behaved, but it works in all pens and gives me a baseline for how a pen works.

Nice dark purple. Reminds me of Lamy Azurite. I own a few Monteverde colors (but not this one) and have been impressed with their flow and performance.

I quite like the color smearing effect in this ink. I recently acquired some vial brush pens, and I wonder how this sort of ink would play with that. Are there any similar inks from other makers that would play well with water? I’d like to see something like that reviewed, or alternatively, new products from Kyoto TAG or 3 Oysters.
