We’re shaking things up this week with a customer-requested ink comparison instead of our usual weekly ink review. In the comments of a recent post, one of you asked to see Dominant Industry Lavender vs. Sunset ink side by side—and we were more than happy to oblige. This post features up-close swatches, writing samples, and ink bottle and packaging shots, so you can get a better feel for these two shimmery inks from Domimant Industry’s Pearl Series. If you’re a fan of purple fountain pen inks, you may find a couple in today’s feature you’ll want to get to know better.

Dominant Industry Sunset Ink vs. Lavender Ink: Ink Swatches + Writing Samples

We tested both inks using a J. Herbin glass dip pen and swatched them on Col-o-ring ink testing swatch cards. You can also see Sunset ink perform below on both Tomoe River paper and 100gsm cream dot grid paper.

Sunset ink shows off a delicate gold shimmer in pooled areas and subtle shading throughout. Lavender, on the other hand, leans slightly pinker in tone and offers a soft silver shimmer that plays beautifully with its pastel hue. Both are stunning in larger swatches but may appear too faint with finer nibs in regular writing.
Dominant Industry Sunset Ink vs. Lavender Ink: Packaging Perks

Both inks arrive in Dominant Industry’s signature 25ml teardrop-shaped glass bottle—a fan favorite for its unique look and functional, stable base. The inks also come boxed in attractive, minimalist brown-and-white packaging that adds to the premium feel.
Final Thoughts: Which Should You Choose?

If you love warm-toned purples with a golden glow, Sunset may be your new favorite shimmer ink. Prefer a cooler, slightly pink lavender with silver sparkle? Lavender is a perfect fit. While both offer the same dry time, flow, and shimmer behavior, the difference in base hue and shimmer color makes them feel distinct. Either one would make a lovely addition to any ink lover’s collection—especially those who like to write with broader nibs or want shimmer inks for decorative work.

I love them both. But if I had to pick just one it would have to be Sunset. They make me wish I had some artistic talent. An artist could really highlight their beauty. My artistic ability is pretty much limited to a fude or flex nib, or one of the Speedball/Brause decorative dip nibs. Or making big ink splotches on Tomoe River paper. That I can do. If these are available as samples, I would like to get samples of both to see if I could make use of either of them for my purposes.
I checked and we don’t currently have these two in stock as 4ml samples – but I’ll put in a request for you!
Thank you!
I’m still to new to all of this, but I really like the look of Sunset – especially with that gold shimmer!
It’s such an eye catching combination, isn’t it?
Id have to go with the Lavender…I’m a huge fan of silver shimmer. For a future review…is there such a mythical ink as a lavender or pink based ink that has a holographic shimmer (read: multi-toned…silver/pink/blue, or gold/purple/green, etc) that is vibrant enough to read when using a fine or extra fine nib on tomoe river paper, but that doesn’t bleed through such thin paper?
You really know what you want 😀 I love that – I’m going to have to look around and see what I can find!
Would love to see a comparison of gray shimmer inks! My favorites are Wearingeul Half Moon and Vinta Nakar.
this is a fun one – I’ll add it to my list! (Have you tried Wearingeul’s I Am Cat? I’m obsessed).
so amazed by all the different styles you represent….truly exciting
So glad you enjoy it! 😀
I’m in love with these new colors. Sunset ink is my facorite
Sunset is absolutely stunning 😀
Shimmer aside (I’m not really a shimmer fan — give me shading over shimmer any/every day!), Sunset is really a nice color.
I do love that with a nice shading ink I don’t have to worry about which nib I’m using – and there are so many gorgeous shading inks out there, too.
Sunset is fantastic! It looks like it’s not too light for writing like some of the lighter inks can be?
Yes, that’s true. It’s more visible in everyday writing than a lot of similar ink colors. It is a shimmer ink, so you’d want to use it with a larger nib (Stub, Broad, BB, etc. or MAYBE a medium nib).
