Ink Review Testing Factors (to keep things scientific):

As usual, we used a  J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen (with a tip comparable to a medium-fine fountain pen nib) on Rhodia dot pad paper. (Remember as you read this review that different papers or different nib sizes may produce different results!)

What Sort of Ink Bottle Does Robert Oster Use?

Robert Oster Plumb Nut ink comes in Robert Oster’s standard PET environmentally friendly plastic 50ml bottle with a leak proof cap. Each of the brand’s ink bottles is identical with a simple white label printed with a representation of the color of Plumb Nut on the top of the cap and the gold Robert Oster label on the bottle. This brand uses no additional packaging to keep costs down.

How Much Do Robert Oster Signature Inks Cost?

Robert Oster inks are a very reasonable mid-range priced ink for a 50ml quantity. Look for the current sale price at PenChalet.com.

How Did This Week’s Ink Fair in the 1-Dip Test?

We use the 1-dip test to see how far one dip can write on paper (dipping the pen into the ink only once). Plumb Nut ink very easily wrote across the paper on all three writing samples with lots of ink to spare. (Using only one dip per writing sample “S” “X” and scribble lines, see the image above).

How Fast Does Robert Oster Plumb Nut Ink Dry?

During our Robert Oster Plumb Nut ink review, we saw a dry time of approximately 5 seconds with medium saturation, so we’d recommend this ink as an everyday ink choice.

Does This Week’s Fountain Pen Ink Bleed Through?

We saw no bleeding during normal use on Rhodia dot pad paper. However, there was very slight bleeding during the heavy saturated cotton swab test (but only at the wettest points).

Was There Any Feathering During the Plumb Nut Ink Review?

We saw no feathering during normal use, and just some slight feathering during the water test (which is expected for non-waterproof ink).

How Does the Ink Stand Up to Water?

Robert Oster Plumb Nut ink is not meant to be waterproof, but we put it to the test anyway. For the water test we let our ink sample dry for about 3 minutes before we run a wet cotton swab over the sample to observe the effect. Here are the results we saw during today’s review:

  • Light color smearing
  • Lines still very legible
  • Some very slight distortion and line fading

Does Robert Oster Plumb Nut Ink Have Good Shading Traits?

Robert Oster Plumb Nut ink showed some nice shading possibilities – if you take advantage of it with the right nib and penmanship.

Final Conclusion on Robert Oster Plumb Nut Ink:

Robert Oster Plumb Nut ink is a reasonably priced ink that comes in the standard 50ml PET plastic ink bottle. The nice, dark pink-purple is pretty unique – more dusty and dark than many pink fountain pen inks. Plumb Nut ink showed some nice shading traits, and a very reasonable dry time (approx. 5 seconds). We’d recommend this unique pink ink as an everyday ink choice. Made by the prolific and well-known Robert Oster, an Australian ink company, the ink comes in simple, but effective packaging. Happy writing from Australia!
