Monteverde Fireopal Ink

We noticed the following traits while testing Monteverde Fireopal ink that you may find helpful when choosing your next ink purchase:

Testing Factors

We used a J. Herbin glass dip pen on Rhodia Bloc. N. 18 paper for this ink review.

Bottle Sizes

Monteverde, with their new release of inks, also has recently released an additional smaller bottle size. Monteverde Fireopal ink is still available in the regular 90 ml. unique glass bottle, but it is now also available in a new smaller 30 ml. glass bottle, making it easier than ever to try out the new colors without breaking the bank or having to use up a large capacity 90 ml. bottle of ink.

Cost

Monteverde Fireopal ink, as well as all other colors in the Monteverde World of Color ink collection, are a great value. Each Monteverde ink bottle is below the average retail cost for a similar bottle of its size and yet the characteristics and quality is very good and respected in the industry. A smaller 30 ml. ink bottle of Fireopal retails for $8.00 with the larger 90 ml. bottle retailing for $15.00.

Dry Time

Using Monteverde Fireopal ink on Rhodia bloc N. 18 paper with a glass dip pen with a fine nib equivalent, we found a dry time around 6-10 seconds. This is respectable, although not one of the fastest drying inks on the market but fast enough for every day use.

Bleed Through

We did not experience any bleeding during normal use with a J. Herbin glass dip pen on Rhodia paper.

Feathering

We did not experience any feathering during normal use on Rhodia paper. Each sample line using Monteverde Fireopal ink was clear and crisp. However, during our water test, we noticed some slight feathering.

Water Test

After letting a Monteverde Fireopal ink sample dry for 3 minutes, we ran a wet cotton swab over the ink sample. This produced quite a bit of color smearing and some slight feathering. The lines remained intact except at the wettest part of the water test. Monteverde Fireopal ink is not a waterproof fountain pen ink.

Shading

Monteverde Fireopal ink produces some wonderful shading characteristics. The darker wetter lines are a deep burnt orange color with the lighter dryer lines a nice orange color with a slight red tinge. Overall the effect is beautiful.

Conclusion about the Monteverde Fireopal ink

Overall Monteverde Fireopal ink is a wonderful unique shade of orange, with nice characteristics, nice shading and a fairly quick dry time. Additionally with the reasonably low price and multiple sized ink bottle choices Monteverde offers, Monteverde Fireopal ink a great choice this summer. Pick up a bottle today!

What a great line of inks! Looking forward to trying a few of them. I visit Oz now and then, so perhaps I’ll get it at the source.

Thanks for the opportunity to win!

Thanks for the great review! Just picked up a bottle of olivine from you wonderful Pen Chalet folk and was contemplating getting fire opal as well. Now, after reading This review, i think I’m definitely going to go for it. This ink, or the ITF technology, makes the ink super wet. I am now in need of a broad pen that lays down a drier line than what I’ve got.

I’ve never tried Monteverde inks, but this ink seems interesting. It’s somewhat between Diamine Ancient Copper and Pilot Iroshizuku Fuyu-Gaki, I think. The shading seems rather wonderful.

This looks like what I thought Apache Sunset was going to look like. It has a nice warm orange color and lots of shading. Lemme at it.
