Fountain pen ink come in many different brands as well as a multitude of colors but is that all that makes them different? The answer is no. In fact, there is many more differences when it comes to fountain pen inks than just color or brand. In our fountain pen inks infographic we have categorized many popular inks into some of the properties that make the inks different. These various properties make the inks better for use in various applications. What are these properties and which ink is best for me? For instance are you looking for an ink that drys fast, one that is good for signing important documents, or one that works well in cold weather? These are just a few ink properties to consider when selecting an ink.

Waterpoof Inks

Are you looking for an ink that does not wash away when your paper gets wet? These fountain pen inks are created to be waterproof.

Noodlers Ink Polar Black, Polar Blue, Lexington Grey, Air Corp Blue, Walnut, Heart of Darkness and others.

Water Resistant Inks

Water resistant inks are not completely water proof but they are close. These ink resist water and washing out.

Pigmented or Carbon Inks

These inks contain small particles that darken the ink when applied. One disadvantage of this type of ink is they may clog some pens.

Lubricated Inks

Freeze Resistant Inks

This is a great chart, but my question is, which is the best ink to use for documents like checks and things you sign that kind of need the signature. Can you get by with ‘Water Resistant’? Or do you need to use water proof or permanent?

The water based nature of modern fountain pen ink makes it such that there is really not a permanence to it like oil based inks in ballpoint pens. Pigmented inks like iron gall or India ink are better, but do not work in fountain pens with a feed system. That said, Noodlers recently developed an ink pigmented with nanoparticles so small they can flow through the feed. They call those in that line their Bulletproof inks.
