Your very first step will be to disassemble your pen. After taking off the cap, hold the grip section and unscrew the barrel from the grip. Often, manufacturers will include a loose cartridge in the barrel of your pen. It is important to note that not all cartridges fit all pens. Certain brands, like Lamy and Platinum, only accept their own brand of cartridges. After you have disassembled your pen, take the loose cartridge and hold it as pictured to the right.

Next, insert the cartridge into the opening of the grip section. Inside the grip section is a pointed end, or nipple, that will puncture the ink cartridge. Make sure that you are inserting the correct end of your cartridge. For most cartridges, the end to insert will be the smaller end, or the end that has a seal/stopper. Platinum Cartridges, for example, have a metal ball sealing the correct end. You will need to press the cartridge into place, so don’t be afraid of applying a little bit of pressure. Generally you will hear a little ‘click’ once the cartridge is punctured.

Now that your ink cartridge is in place, hold the grip section and replace the barrel. The ink will work its way down the feed using capillary action, which can take some time. You can speed up this process by holding the pen nib down for awhile. Alternatively, you can ‘prime’ the nib by gently squeezing the cartridge in order to force ink through the feed. However, some cartridges are not as ‘hardy’ as others and may not hold up to repeated priming.

Now you’re ready to write! Once you the cartridge is empty, simply replace it with a new one! If you are changing ink color and brand, however, it is suggested to flush the pen before refilling.
