If you ask someone what they thought was the best starter fountain pen, you’d like get two responses: The Lamy Safari, or the Pilot Metropolitan. Today we’d like to talk more about the less-well-known cousin of the Safari and Metropolitan, the Platinum Plaisir Fountain Pen.

Appearance
We chose the Frosty Blue Platinum Plaisir for this review. The cap and barrel are a wonderful, light blue, that really catches the eye. The Plaisir’s cap and barrel are made of light weight aluminum, and each color comes with a chrome trim. If you are familiar with the Platinum Preppy Fountain Pen, then you are familiar with the nib unit of the Plaisir. One thing to note, is that the nib pulls out of the feed and grip section. This allows you to clean the nib thoroughly, as well as the feed.
Qualities
While there are many similarities between the Platinum Plaisir and it’s cousins, the Plaisir has it’s own unique qualities. As noted above, the nib and feed are both super easy to clean. The grip section is actually clear, so you can see the entire feed. Also, the ingenious cap design is claimed to allow the pen to be stored for a year without drying out. At $17.60, the Platinum Plaisir Fountain Pen stands firm in the middle ground between the Pilot Metropolitan and the Lamy Safari.
Performance
We return, yet again, to the most important question. How does it write? Answer: Smoothly, and with a fine line. As Platinum is a Japanese brand, their nibs tend to write on the fine side compared to your typical Western nib. We selected a fine nib to use in this review, and as you can see, it definitely lays down a fine line. We used the Organics Studio Ralph Waldo Emerson Twilight Blue Ink for this review, and the resulting combination was beautiful.
Conclusion about the Platinum Plaisir Fountain Pen
So, what did we conclude? We found the Platinum Plaisir Fountain Pen to be equal to it’s cousins. If you are looking for a great starter pen, or maybe you just want to get one for a friend, the Plaisir is a fantastic option.
