The Great Sage’s 1-Dip Test:

Using a single dip of the J. Herbin glass pen, The Great Sage Heaven’s Equal was able to write all three lines of our sample test without running dry, which is an excellent indicator of its wet flow and high ink saturation.

Dry Time: How Fast Did the Ink Dry?

Dry time test shows 20+ second dry time for this wet ink on Rhodia paper.

If you’re after a fast-drying ink, the Great Sage is not that ink. The Great Sage Heaven’s Equal had a dry time of over 20 seconds on Rhodia paper. It’s a very wet ink, which contributes to the strong shimmer effect and saturated color payoff, but it does mean you’ll need to be patient or use faster-drying paper.

Water Test: The Great Sage Exposed to Water

Water test result showing line distortion and smearing in The Great Sage Heaven’s Equal ink
Water test shows this ink is not waterproof—heavy smearing and faded lines after 3-minute dry time.

We conducted the water test after a full 3-minute dry time. The results were dramatic.

Heavy running and smearing of the ink
Significant line distortion
Some parts of writing were completely washed out
No bleedthrough, but water exposure caused feathering

Conclusion: This ink does not hold up well under water, so avoid it for documents that need durability.

Did The Great Sage Heaven’s Equal Show Any Special Properties?

Close-up of The Great Sage Heaven’s Equal ink cotton swab tests with visible gold shimmer
Gold shimmer in Wearingeul’s The Great Sage Heaven’s Equal ink is bold and highly visible during cotton swab tests.

Let’s talk shimmer. This ink is loaded with gold shimmer; and we do mean loaded.
The shimmer is clearly visible in both swab tests and regular writing.
It settles well and distributes evenly when shaken.
The burgundy base ink shows some shading, especially in larger swabs or with heavier flow nibs.
The wet flow enhances shimmer and gives it a luxe, glistening appearance once dry.
After water exposure or in lighter applications, the burgundy can appear pinkish, adding to the ink’s dynamic nature.

Feathering or Bleeding During the Ink Review:

Despite its wet nature, The Great Sage Heaven’s Equal showed no feathering or bleedthrough on Rhodia paper, which is impressive. However, we’d recommend testing first on lower-quality paper, as its wetness may pose issues outside of premium paper options.

If you’re in the mood for a bold, mythic shimmer ink that’s wet-writing, luxurious, and unapologetically dramatic, Wearingeul’s The Great Sage Heaven’s Equal won’t disappoint.
The gold shimmer is dazzling and shows up easily in both wide swabs and everyday writing.
The burgundy base is rich and deep, though it can shift to a dusty rose in lighter applications or water exposure.
It’s a wet ink—you’ll want to give it time to dry, but you’ll be rewarded with dazzling results.
Packaged in a collector-worthy bottle, it’s a standout in the Myths of the World lineup.

I’m not big on shimmer, but if this were available without it, I would be much more interested
