Jean-Baptiste Bichelberger began his paper mill in 1858 in the small town of Etival Clairefontaine naming it after the town. The Clairefontaine paper company quickly became one of the most important factories in the region. In 1890 Clairefontaine started manufacturing notebooks.

Customer Reviews

This is where it's at! Great, affordable paper. Even picks up sheen! No feathering, no bleed-through, decent dry-time (yes, sheen looks best on Tomoe River, which is why it's my usual favorite, but that costs more and you'll wait forever for inks to dry). This is a great balance of practicality and making your inks look good. If you're debating between this and Field Notes, avoid the Field Notes and get the Clairefontaine instead. You'll thank yourself later.

These envelopes are very good; they are fountain pen friendly and affordable. The only reason for the 4 rating on functionality is the inside fold sometimes catches the paper when inserting. It's a very minor inconvenience.

I bought a few notebooks to get me over the line to free shipping. I am pleased with these little notebooks. I have designated one as my pen collection journal. I try to keep an inventory and notes on the pens. This is a perfect fit for my desk. was randomly given a dark grey and an orange.

My favorite fountain pen friendly notebook. The spirals make it easy to fold the cover back, and the wider ruling is great for broad and stub nibs. Excellent value, too.

This is by far my favorite paper. It is smooth, bright white, and brings out the sheen or shimmer in every ink.

This is the smoothest paper I've ever felt. Smoother than tomoe river paper in my opinion. The only issue I have is that the glue along the top is not strong enough to hold the cover when folded back on the provided creases.

Paper is VERY fountain pen friendly and a brillant white color. The pages tear cleanly off the pad... every time!

I got the lined notepad for letter-writing. The paper quality is excellent -- barely any show-through even with broader nibs, and all of my pens write very smoothly on it. It's great for showing off shading on ink colors.

I use these A5 sized Clairefontaine side-stapled notebooks for journaling. Not as many pages in them as other notebooks, but they take every kind of ink I have thrown at them (even Baystate Blue!). They're a treat to use, and the covers even look nice.

My problem with some of the Very Good Paper Notebooks is that I feel like I just can't write on them for everyday stuff like shopping lists or taking notes for an online game. That just feels wasteful TO ME. (I may have a little problem.)
But this looks and feels enough like that old-fashioned steno pads that I've decided I can use it for mundane scribbling without feeling guilty. Good paper + no guilt = WIN!

I love these envelopes! They're a little big for A5 paper folded in half, but that's a very minor quibble. The paper is what I'd expect from the Triomphe line, delightfully smooth to write on, and allowing for some shading with certain inks!

I always keep a pad of Clairefontaine Triomphe at hand for all my letters. The paper is a little thicker and it feels nice. It also works well with most all inks, though it's not as good as Tomoe River at bringing out the best in your ink. I typically use "regular" inks (no/minimal sheen, shading) on this paper. Inks can shade on them, but not as obviously. If I write a longer letter, I'll take out the Tomoe so the envelope isn't as thick/heavy, but as long as it's within 3 sheets, it's not bad.
