All About the Ink Maker: Private Reserve

Private Reserve is an exciting new brand at Pen Chalet introduced in 2021 or, more accurately, reintroduced. Private Reserve inks are actually an old beloved ink that was brought back to life in 2021 by a new owner with a new distributor. While some of you have never heard of Private Reserve inks…there are many who were very excited to see their return to the market, and with new colors, no less. Pen Chalet is a proud authorized retailer and currently carries 38 colors of regular Private Reserve ink, and 6 colors of Private Reserve Fast Dry Ink. The Private Reserve inks are know for their smooth ink flow, high saturation, and nice shading traits. All Private Reserve inks are made in the EU, and then packaged and distributed in the USA.

This Week’s Featured Ink: Private Reserve Purple Mojo

In today’s Private Reserve Purple Mojo ink review, we checked out a gorgeous purple from the popular inkmaker’s lineup. Purple Mojo is a dark, true purple ink that is bright and vibrant, but still a dark shade of purple that shows up very well on paper. This Private Reserve ink would make a great everyday use ink color.

It’s Time: Private Reserve Purple Mojo Ink Review

Ink Review Testing Factors (to keep things scientific):

For our review of Private Reserve Purple Mojo ink we used a French made J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen on French made Rhodia paper (dot pad). The dip pen has a tip similar to a medium-fine fountain pen nib.

Let’s Talk About the Private Reserve Purple Mojo Ink Bottle

Private Reserve Purple Mojo ink comes in a standard, simple, large capacity 60 ml. (2.3 oz.) round ink bottle with a very large lid. The simple yet effective packaging has a clear depiction of the ink color inside the bottle, and the large lid is ribbed for easy opening.

How Much Does Private Reserve Fountain Pen Ink Cost?

Private Reserve fountain pen ink is available at a very economical price for the large quantity. Look for great prices on Private Reserve inks at PenChalet.com.

How Did This Week’s Ink Fair in the 1-Dip Test?

We applied a one dip test to see how far one dip could write on paper (dipping the pen into the ink only one time). This week’s ink easily wrote across the paper on all three writing samples with medium to high saturation. (One dip per writing sample: “S” “X” and scribble lines, seen above).

How Fast Does this Week’s Featured Ink Dry?

Private Reserve Purple Mojo ink had an extremely fast dry time (just 1-2 seconds); and it’s not even from Private Reserve’s Fast Drying ink series. This medium to high saturation ink is definitely quick drying enough to be used as an everyday ink.

Does Private Reserve Purple Mojo Ink Bleed Through?

We saw slight bleeding during normal use on Rhodia dot pad paper, and some additional bleeding during the heavy saturated cotton swab test.

Was There Any Feathering During the Review?

We saw no feathering during normal use, and almost no additional feathering during the water test.

How Does the Ink Stand Up to Water?

Private Reserve Purple Mojo ink is not waterproof. And considering this was a dark ink, the light color smearing we saw was actually kind of impressive. We normally see a lot heavier color smearing during the water test when we’re working with dark fountain pen inks. The lines were still very clear and legible. There was almost no feathering during the water test.

What About Shading Traits?

We saw some nice shading traits pop up during the ink review. If you’re looking for shading traits, make sure to use a nib that allows ink flow variation like a stub or italic nib. We saw dark purple to a slightly lighter vibrant purple color.

Final Conclusion on this Week’s Featured Private Reserve Ink:

This week we worked with an economically priced true purple ink manufactured in the European Union. The ink comes in clear, neat, and simple packaging including simple color labeling. The ink’s large 60 ml. ink bottle has a large, easy open lid. Private Reserve currently has 38 high performance inks available at Pen Chalet – all easy to clean and use. It would be difficult not to be impressed by the extremely fast dry time (this ink is a great choice for an everyday ink color). Happy writing from the EU!

Very interesting color. It’s a pretty deep purple, with some brightness. I hope I win! (if not, I’ll have to buy one)
