Pelikan Edelstein Onyx Ink, Edelstein, which is “stone” in German is Pelikan brand’s luxury inks. Pelikan has now come out with a number of inks, all linked to a color of a “stone” in nature. Edelstein Onyx ink is Pelikan’s version of black ink. Edelstein Onyx ink is a true black ink and is in the category of deep rich black inks such as Aurora Black or the Noodler’s Black. It’s a good everyday quality ink that is easy on your fountain pens.

Testing Factors

We used a Rohrer & Klingner glass dip pen for this review on Rhodia Block N. 18 paper . The glass dip writing tip is comparable to a medium to broad nib.

Bottle Sizes

All Pelikan Edelstein inks comes in a large 50 ml. bottle. Each bottle is a beautiful weighted distinctive shaped bottle/ink well that has been likened to a work of art.

Pelikan Edelstein Onyx Ink is a luxury ink and retails for $28.00.

Dry Time

Using the large dip pen, the dry time was a reasonable 12-15 seconds.

Bleed Through

Only two minor bleed spots were noticed when using the large glass dip pen. Normal fountain pen use on good paper such as the Rhodia, should produce zero bleeding.

Feathering

We experienced no feathering at all with the pen and paper we used for this review with Pelikan Edelstein Onyx Ink.

Water Test

Running a soaking wet cotton swab over ink samples after letting them dry for 3 minutes produced some smearing, smudging and feathering. Pelikan Edelstein Onyx ink is not a waterproof ink.

Shading

Pelikan Edelstein Onyx ink produces zero shading, as its a true dark black opaque ink.

Overall Pelikan Edelstein Onyx ink is a good dark ink, with a beautiful glass display quality bottle and a great dark black ink that can be used everyday. The price is on the high side, but you pay for the quality of the ink, and its presentation.
