Appearance

The Kaweco AL Sport Fountain Pen is a pocket, or mini, sized pen. Although the AL Sport is clip-less, you don’t have to be afraid of it rolling away. The cap on the AL Sport is octagonal which allows it to stay exactly where you put it. Also, you can post the cap which extends the pen from four inches, to five and a quarter inches. If you never buy a pen without a clip, you can purchase a Kaweco Slide-on Clip as a add on. Also noteworthy are the many colors available, including a few stonewashed options.

Qualities

Kaweco AL Sport Fountain Pen Nib

Kaweco AL Sport Fountain Pen Nib

Arguably the best quality about the Kaweco AL Sport Fountain Pen is its compact size. The AL Sport can easily be an Every Day Carry, either in a pocket or in your favorite case. The AL-Sport rings up with a price of $80.00 or the stonewashed for $85.00, which is a bit higher than their plastic version of the pen, the Classic Sport. Although, the durability of this pen definitely outweighs the price tag. Kaweco, as a German brand, uses German-made nibs, that tend to write a little more broad than your typical Japanese brand.

Performance

Now, it’s time to get down to the meat of the matter. For this review, we used a Stonewashed Black Kaweco AL Sport Fountain Pen that was inked up with Diamine Earl Grey. This AL Sport wrote like a dream. It was smooth across the paper, and has really great ink flow. The AL Sport rested well in the hand, although it may be too small for those with larger hands. We do have to say that there is the rare occurrence where Kaweco nibs are not smooth out of the box. However, with just a small amount of tuning, even these rare accidents can be turned into dreams.

Conclusion

In conclusion, if you’re looking for a compact Every Day Carry, or just looking for a nice pen, we recommend you try the Kaweco AL Sport Fountain Pen. We’re sure that you’ll love their quality. I would like to know which inks are best for fountain pen sketching. A review on any of them for that would be appreciated. Things such as quick drying, permanent, etc.

I’ve heard good things about Kaweco pens, and the design is unlike any of the other pens in my collection. I am definitely interested in owning one in the future. This ink looks lovely too. I am not a fan of black inks or even a lot of blue inks (used them my whole life because they are the standard, and now I want more variety) so this color is a nice substitute. Professional but still a bit different than the norm.

My favorite ink lately has been an old simple standby – Waterman Mysterious Blue. It behaves well and is safe for any pen, and it’s a great color too.
