The Field Notes 36th Limited Edition, for the Fall of 2017 is the Field Notes Dime Novel Fall Edition. Inspired by the 1860s American publishing phenomenon, the Dime Novel. Field Notes has reproduced these iconic notebooks with the same typesetting, compact size, paper stock and sewn bindings. Of course they did add a few signature Field Notes touches such as the rounded corners, high quality paper and Futura typeface.
In the 1860s, publishers Erastus and Irwin Beadle released a new series of paperbacks called Beadle’s Dime Novels. These two brothers published a variety of paperback books in various subjects. Their first book in the Beadle series sold more than 65,000 copies in the first few months after publication. Their great success inspired imitations and “Dime Novel” became a general term used for the mass-market American paperback.
The Field Notes Dime Novel edition is smaller than their standard notebook format at 4 1/2″ x 6 1/2″. The 72 interior pages are “Natural White” 70# Strathmore Premium Wove. These pages are then sewn in three, 24 page signatures. These are then glued into the cover made of “Safety Orange” 100# from the French Paper Co. This paper is a much more durable cover than the original Dime Novels.
The Beadles brothers would occasionally leave a few blank pages at the beginning of their original publications to end up with a 100 page book. Field Notes has left all of their pages blank aside from the page number in the upper right and the black and white engraving from the mid-1800s on the first page. This gives you plenty of space to write your own ideas.
Each Field Notes Dime Novel comes in a 2 pack and are made in the U.S.A. Like each of the Field Notes Quarterly editions as well as the original Dime Novels, these special edition notebooks are only available while supplies last. Make sure you pick up a Field Notes Dime Novel notebook before they are gone for good.
