As with most brown inks, it does have a reddish hue to the color that is especially noticeable at the lightest points. Waterman Absolute Brown Ink doesn’t have as much pink as J. Herbin Terre de Feu Ink, but a bit more than the Robert Oster Golden Brown Ink. If you are looking for a brown ink without any pink or red, look to Pelikan Edelstein Smoky Quartz which has a nice dark golden brown color.
Waterman Absolute Brown Ink is made in France. It is a good inexpensive brown option that performs nicely, has good saturation and is the deep brown color most are looking for in a brown ink.

Testing Factors
We used all French made product for this review, Waterman Absolute Brown Ink with a J. Herbin glass dip pen on Rhodia Bloc graph paper.
Bottle Sizes
Waterman ink comes in a distinctive yet functional glass 50 ml. bottle. The Waterman bottle is a multi-faceted 9 sided bottle that allows its users to place it on various sides to obtain those last few drops of ink.
Cost
Waterman Absolute Brown Ink is a economy to mid range priced ink, which is surprising as it is being imported from France and is quite respected. The retail price for a good sized 50 ml. bottle is only $11.00, but we have it available for $8.80.
Dry Time
Waterman inks typically have a very good dry time. During our review of Waterman Absolute Brown Ink we found a very fast dry time of about 3 seconds, using the fine tip glass dip pen on Rhodia paper. Waterman Absolute Brown Ink is a very functional everyday ink.
Bleed Through
The Waterman Absolute Brown Ink did not experience any bleeding using when using a glass dip pen on Rhodia paper.
Feathering
Under normal use the Waterman Absolute Brown Ink had no feathering at all writing on Rhodia paper. However, as the ink is not waterproof and we did experience quite a bit of feathering and line distortion on the wettest parts of the water test.
Water Test
We ran a wet swab over various Waterman Absolute Brown Ink samples after letting them dry from about 3 minutes. This test produced quite a bit of color smearing and the reddish pink hue comes out. There was also line distortion and feathering, which is to be expected with a non-waterproof ink. At the slightly wet portions was there no line distortion or feathering and only slight color smearing.
Shading
Waterman Absolute Brown Ink produces nice shading. The dark brown color at the wettest points shade to a lighter brown with a slight pink hue at the dryer, lighter areas.
Conclusion about the Waterman Absolute Brown Ink
In summary, Waterman Absolute Brown Ink is a great value. It has a tremendous dry time and is a nice dark brown color that can be used in everyday settings. It will produce some nice shading characteristics and is well respected in the community. Happy writing with this wonderful French imported ink from Waterman.
