Grey Shimmer Ink Comparison: 6 Inks That Prove Neutral Doesn’t Mean Boring

Welcome to this week’s ink showdown: the grey shimmer ink comparison. We gathered six shimmering grey inks that are anything but forgettable—each one showing off unexpected depth, shifts in undertone, and a range of shimmer from glitzy gold to playful rose. Whether you’re drawn to subtle sparkle or dramatic flair, there’s something here for every ink lover with a taste for shimmer and sophistication.

Today’s ink comparison focused on six different inks that are typically categorized as gray ink with a shimmer property, including:

  1. Wearingeul Othello ink
  2. Diamine Shimmering Sparkling Shadows ink
  3. Ferris Wheel Press Granite Guardians ink
  4. Tono & Lims Diamond ink
  5. Wearingeul I Am a Cat ink
  6. Dominant Industry Early Spring ink

All swatches were created on a Rhodia Goalbook using a craft paintbrush and a J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen (which writes similarly to a medium nib fountain pen).

More About Wearingeul Othello Ink

Wearingeul Othello ink swatch reveals a brownish-grey base with subtle silver shimmer.

From Wearingeul’s William Shakespeare Collection, Othello surprised us with a warm brownish-grey base and fine silver shimmer. The shimmer showed up best in broader strokes and had a moody elegance that paired well with its literary namesake. The color leans more toward earth tones than true grey, which adds to its uniqueness.

More About Diamine Sparkling Shadows Shimmering Ink

Swatch of Diamine Shimmering Sparkling Shadows ink with deep grey base and gold shimmer.
Diamine Sparkling Shadows offers deep grey drama and glimmering gold shimmer.

This Diamine classic leans deep grey with subtle gold shimmer that hides in plain sight—until the light hits it just right. It’s a quiet powerhouse with great contrast and a velvety finish. In our comparison, the shimmer tended to “flash” more dramatically than sit consistently on the page, which makes it a great ink for expressive letterers or sketchers.

Granite Guardians in the Grey Shimmer Ink Comparison:

Ferris Wheel Press Granite Guardians glows with a grey base and a blush of rose shimmer.

From FWP’s fairy tale-inspired line, Granite Guardians is a beautiful, cool-toned grey with blush-rose shimmer. At light saturation, it’s sleek and silvery, but heavier strokes revealed hints of green underneath. Paired with the brand’s iconic bottle design, this ink is as pretty on your desk as it is on the page.

More About Tono & Lims Diamond Ink

Tono & Lims Diamond ink swatch with lavender-grey base and subtle shimmer.
A soft lavender-grey base and subtle shimmer define Tono & Lims Diamond.

Diamond leaned soft and cool with a lavender-grey base. It’s a more subtle ink overall, but in heavier application, the grey deepens and the shimmer starts to glow. It offers a graceful, almost understated elegance—perfect for gentle shading and artistic writing styles.

More About Wearingeul I Am a Cat Fountain Pen Ink

Wearingeul I Am a Cat ink swatch with grey-green base and consistent gold shimmer.
I Am a Cat offers consistent gold shimmer over a slate-grey base with green undertones.

This one stood out. A deep slate-grey with gold shimmer that appeared reliably and consistently in all strokes, even with finer applications. The ink also displayed a surprising green undertone that gave the gold shimmer extra pop. Subtle but striking—and literary cat lovers will adore the reference.

More About Dominant Industry Early Spring

Swatch of Dominant Industry Early Spring ink with lavender base and pink shimmer shifting to turquoise.
Dominant Industry Early Spring dazzles with pink shimmer and lavender-to-turquoise undertones.

Early Spring is the wild card of the group. While it starts as a soft lavender-grey, at heavy saturation the ink shifts into an ethereal turquoise glow that plays beautifully against the strong violet-pink shimmer. It’s magical. If you want your writing to look like it came from a fantasy novel, this is your ink.

Of Note: Two Interesting Discoveries from the Grey Shimmer Ink Comparison

  1. I Am a Cat vs. Sparkling Shadows: These two had similar base tones and shimmer colors, but the shimmer behavior differed noticeably. Sparkling Shadows shimmer was more elusive—catching the light at certain angles—while I Am a Cat gave you shimmer straight on, no apologies.
  2. Early Spring’s Chameleon Effect: This was the only ink that shifted significantly at heavy saturation, transitioning from soft lavender-grey to turquoise with a metallic pop.

Also worth noting is that none of the inks exhibited feathering or bleeding during the test, and all shimmer particles behaved beautifully on Rhodia paper.

All six grey shimmer inks featured side-by-side in the final recap of Pen Chalet’s ink comparison.

🎖 Most Consistent Shimmer: Wearingeul I Am a Cat
Always golden, always glowing—no need to tilt the page for sparkle – unless you want to, that is.

🎖 Biggest Plot Twist: Dominant Industry Early Spring
Lavender? Turquoise? Pink shimmer? You’ll never see it coming. It’s the kind of surprise that hits like Rhysand crashing a wedding—unexpected, dramatic, and honestly… kind of a relief.

🎖 Most Professional Glam: Diamine Sparkling Shadows
For the shimmer-lover who works a desk job, understated but impactful.

🎖 Coolest Undertone: Ferris Wheel Press Granite Guardians
From grey to green with a kiss of rose shimmer—this ink has range.

🎖 Softest & Subtlest: Tono & Lims Diamond
A quiet beauty with soft lavender vibes and a whisper of sparkle.

🎖 Most Dramatic Mood: Wearingeul Othello
With that earthy, brownish base and silver flash, this ink’s got serious Shakespearean vibes.

Final Thoughts on the Grey Shimmer Ink Comparison:

Our grey shimmer ink comparison proves that shimmer doesn’t have to mean loud, and grey doesn’t have to mean dull. These six inks span a spectrum of greys—from earthy to ethereal—and every one of them brings something special to the table.

Looking for a no-nonsense grey shimmer? Go with Sparkling Shadows. Want some literary flair? Try Othello or I Am a Cat. Ready to step through a shimmering portal into something unexpected? Early Spring is waiting at the edge of the forest, and she’s not what she seems.

Let us know which one wins your heart—or suggest the next color family we should pit against each other in an ink showdown. And as always, you’ll find these and other fantastic fountain pen inks at PenChalet.com.

I am also not a fan of shimmer inks. Maybe if I was more artistic it might be different.

First pen was a fountain pen, and it was common practice to learn to write with such pens including rudimetary calligraphy.

The gray inks with shimmer was a great choice this month! I have the FWP Granite Guardians and I LOVE it. It’s a fun color to use in painting w/ink for a bit of a moody feel.

A little bit out of context but I just found a new brand (for me) of inks: Ostrich Inks (sheen) and I would love to see comparisons of those with more brands with sheening inks

The 2 Wearingeul inks and the Diamine ink look the best to me even though I’m not a big fan of black & dark gray inks. I might be swayed with this post though haha

I love grays, but I’m not so big on shimmer. Give me a gray with lots of shading…*chef’s kiss*
