Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji Ink: Pilot Iroshizuku inks are well know in the industry for producing high quality inks that dry well, have nice lubrication and high saturation qualities. Iroshizuku ink is also known for its high price, making it one of the few “luxury” inks on the market today. Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink is no exception for having all the qualities that people have come to expect from Iroshizuku ink.
Although, Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink is not a true red of what people expect from a “fire engine red” or “cherry red”, but is a lighter red ink with pink hues and tint to the color. The Momiji ink is a nice satisfying red fountain pen ink. It writes dark and saturates well, creating a red color on the paper. However, when the ink is applied lightly you will see the pink come out. During the water test, the color distortion and smearing is pink in color.
Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink is just one of many colors Pilot Pen Company has produced which presents the beauty of Japan’s nature. Momiji means “autumn” or “autumn leaves” in Japanese.

Testing Factors
We used a J. Herbin glass dip pen with a fine tip on Rhodia Bloc paper for this ink review.
Bottle Sizes
Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink has a luxury bottle to go with this luxury ink. This 50 ml. bottle is fantastic, probably the best in the industry and serves as an inkwell for display on a shelf or desk. Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink is also one of the few Iroshizuku inks that come in the smaller 15 ml. Namiki Iroshizuku 3 bottle ink set. The other two ink colors that come with Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink in the 3 bottle set are Kon-Peki and Yu-Yake.
Cost
Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink is on the expensive end and at the top of the ink market in price. The high quality 50 ml. glass bottle retails for $35.00 and is available at Pen Chalet for $28.00. The smaller 3 ink set of 15 ml. glass bottles retail for $40.00 but is available at Pen Chalet for $32.00. These prices put Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink in the luxury ink category along with Pelikan Edelstein ink and Caran d’Ache bottle ink.
Dry Time
Using a glass dip pen on Rhodia paper we experienced a dry time of approximately 5-6 seconds, although there was very little residue remaining after 3 seconds. With a larger nib, you may experience a longer dry time, but still within the reasonable range for everyday use.
Bleed Through
Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink produced no bleeding at all, even during the cotton swab test.
Feathering
With Rhodia paper, there is no feathering at all with Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink and the lines are distinct and crisp.
Water Test
Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink is not water proof or water resistant. During our water test where we run a soaking wet cotton swab over an ink sample, the color smeared, the wettest lines distorted and feathered.
Shading
Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink has some shading ability and characteristics when used with the right nib and pen strokes. This ink can produce a darker red line along with a lighter shade of red-pink.
Conclusion about the Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji Ink
Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink is a nice color if you are looking for a unique red. If you love Iroshizuku inks, you will love this red color and its characteristics, quick drying, easy flow and nice saturation. Yes, it’s on the expensive side, but is discounted at Pen Chalet, making it more affordable. Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji ink is a perfect red lover ink for journal writing, notes, and letters.
