The Ferris Wheel Press Twilight Symphony ink review puts one of the brand’s most unusual inks to the test: a deep violet-indigo fountain pen ink with blue chameleon shimmer that also happens to be Ferris Wheel Press’s first permanent fountain pen ink.
That combination immediately makes Twilight Symphony interesting. Permanent inks are usually chosen because they’re practical. Shimmer inks are usually chosen because they’re fun. Twilight Symphony essentially asks, “Why not both?”
Ferris Wheel Press officially describes the limited-edition ink as pigmented, permanent, water-resistant, and lightfast, with an indigo base and blue chameleon shimmer. In our test, the base leaned visibly violet with touches of indigo, while the shimmer remained noticeable without taking over the writing.
We tested Ferris Wheel Press Twilight Symphony fountain pen ink using Rhodia lined paper and a J. Herbin glass dip pen that writes approximately like a medium fountain pen nib. Let’s see whether this everlasting symphony can actually carry a tune.
Meet the Ink Maker

Ferris Wheel Press began in Canada in 2010 as a letterpress print studio producing custom stationery before expanding into fountain pens, bottled inks, and collectible writing accessories.
Today, the brand is particularly recognizable for elaborate packaging, story-driven collections, and inks designed to make the writing experience feel a little more theatrical. Ferris Wheel Press describes its mission as helping people “fall in love with writing again,” and Twilight Symphony may be one of the best examples yet of the company combining storytelling with functional ink development.

Ferris Wheel Press Twilight Symphony Ink Review: Get to Know the Series
Twilight Symphony launches Ferris Wheel Press’s Everlasting Fountain Pen Ink concept.
According to Ferris Wheel Press, it is the company’s first permanent fountain pen ink. The formulation is pigmented, water-resistant, and lightfast while still being designed for fountain pen use. Twilight Symphony was released in both 20ml and 85ml glass bottles.
And because this is Ferris Wheel Press, the functional innovation comes wrapped in a story.
Twilight Symphony transports us to a grand hall where Maestro Alero raises his baton and begins a composition intended to play forever. Glowing pipes, mysterious figures, musical imagery, and a shadowy concert hall carry the permanence theme into the packaging itself.

Ferris Wheel Press Twilight Symphony Ink Review: This Week’s Featured Ink
Our test sample showed Twilight Symphony as a dark violet-indigo ink with blue chameleon shimmer.
Ferris Wheel Press officially categorizes the tone as indigo, but our eye test picked up a stronger violet personality, particularly in the writing sample and heavier areas. That violet base develops touches of deeper indigo, giving the color more dimension than a straightforward purple or blue.
Then the shimmer arrives.
The blue chameleon particles create a luminous, color-shifting effect as the angle of the page and light change. During our test, the shimmer was easy to see without becoming excessive. More importantly, the dark base color remained completely readable.
That matters because Twilight Symphony isn’t just trying to be a decorative shimmer ink. Its permanent, water-resistant, and lightfast formulation gives it a practical side as well.
Perfect Pairings: Pens Made for Twilight Symphony
Some inks practically announce which pens they want to live in. With Twilight Symphony, we looked for pens that complement its violet-indigo base, blue shimmer, nighttime atmosphere, and color-changing personality.

Perfect pen pairings for Ferris Wheel Press Twilight Symphony, featuring the Twilight Symphony Masque, LAMY AL-Star Dark Dusk, Delta Duna Reflection Pool, and BENU Talisman Peacock Ore.
| Pen Pick | Why It Works with Twilight Symphony | Pairing Vibe |
|---|---|---|
| Ferris Wheel Press Twilight Symphony Masque | The obvious—and irresistible—top match. Its shimmering violet finish, blue architectural details, stars, and musical imagery were created around the same Twilight Symphony story. | Theatrical, coordinated & dramatic |
| BENU Talisman Peacock Ore | Its shimmering blue and purple resin echoes Twilight Symphony’s violet-indigo base while the iridescent sparkle plays naturally with the ink’s blue chameleon shimmer. Available Broad and Stub nibs can also give the shimmer more room to show. | Iridescent, mystical & dramatic |
| Lamy AL-Star Dark Dusk | A darker, understated pen lets Twilight Symphony provide the sparkle while continuing the twilight theme. Its cartridge/converter system also makes routine cleaning relatively straightforward. | Moody, modern & practical |
| Delta Duna Reflection Pool Limited Edition | Swirls of cobalt, turquoise, softer blue, and pearlescent highlights pull forward the luminous blue side of Twilight Symphony’s chameleon shimmer. Rather than matching the violet-indigo base directly, Reflection Pool creates a cooler, light-catching counterpoint that makes the shimmer the star. | Luminous, aquatic & multidimensional |
The matching Twilight Symphony Masque is especially hard to beat. Its violet Snowfall lacquer, blue artwork, musical staffs, and gold-tone details were designed for this exact world, and its #6 nib system makes it a natural companion to the ink.
One maintenance note: Twilight Symphony is a pigmented permanent shimmer ink. Ferris Wheel Press recommends shaking before use, cleaning regularly, and avoiding long periods of non-use. We’d follow that advice regardless of which pen you choose.
Ferris Wheel Press Twilight Symphony Ink Review: Ink Test Results
For this review we used:
- Dip pen: J. Herbin glass dip pen, writing approximately like a medium nib
- Paper: Rhodia lined paper
- 1-Dip Test: Approximately 1.5 lines
- Dry time: Approximately 10 seconds
- Bleed through: None
- Feathering: None
- Water resistance: Very good, with slight running and distortion
- Special properties: Blue chameleon shimmer, pigmented permanent formulation, water resistance, and lightfastness

Ferris Wheel Press Twilight Symphony ink test results on Rhodia paper, including dry time, 1-Dip Test, water test, and color samples.
As always, fountain pen performance can vary considerably depending on nib size, flow, paper, and how heavily the ink is applied.
Ink Bottle and Packaging
Twilight Symphony’s packaging does an excellent job of making the product story feel tangible before the bottle is even opened.

The cube-shaped outer box uses Ferris Wheel Press’s characteristically detailed artwork to recreate the atmosphere of the Twilight Symphony story. The concert hall theme, architectural details, and nighttime imagery visually reinforce the idea of Maestro Alero’s never-ending performance.
The box itself felt secure and high quality during our review.
We tested the 20ml bottle, a round glass bottle with a relatively small opening. The neck is on the narrower side, but we were still able to reach the ink without difficulty during testing.
The cap was also easy to secure tightly after use.
For an ink designed around longevity, it’s fitting that the packaging feels substantial rather than disposable.
Other Products Used During the Review
We kept our materials intentionally simple:
- J. Herbin glass dip pen
- Rhodia lined paper
The glass dip pen produces a writing line similar to a medium fountain pen nib, giving us a useful look at both the base color and shimmer.
Ferris Wheel Press Twilight Symphony Ink Review: 1-Dip Test
Twilight Symphony’s 1-Dip Test was relatively short compared with many inks we test.
One dip allowed us to write approximately 1.5 lines before needing more ink.

One dip of Twilight Symphony produced approximately 1.5 lines of writing with our J. Herbin glass dip pen.
That doesn’t necessarily indicate how the ink will flow from a fountain pen feed, but it does tell us that our glass dip pen did not retain or continue releasing Twilight Symphony as long as some other inks.
The permanent pigment and shimmer formulation may contribute to a different feel than a conventional dye-based ink, but we wouldn’t draw conclusions about fountain pen flow from a glass dip test alone.
Dry Time: How Fast Did Twilight Symphony Dry?

Twilight Symphony reached approximately a 10-second dry time during our Rhodia paper test.
Twilight Symphony fountain pen ink reached a dry state in approximately 10 seconds on our Rhodia test paper.
That’s a nicely practical result for an ink carrying this many special properties.
We’re dealing with a dark ink, shimmer particles, and a pigmented permanent formulation, yet we didn’t find ourselves waiting an eternity for the writing to become touch-safe.
Different nibs and wetter pens will naturally change that result, particularly with Broad or Stub nibs that place more ink on the page.
Ferris Wheel Press Twilight Symphony Ink Review: Water Test
This may be the section Twilight Symphony has been waiting for.
After exposure to water, we saw slight running and slight line distortion. However, the original writing remained very easy to identify and read.

Twilight Symphony showed slight running and line distortion after water exposure, but the original writing remained clearly visible.
There was also no bleed through to the reverse of the Rhodia paper.
That makes our test consistent with Ferris Wheel Press’s official description of Twilight Symphony as water-resistant rather than completely waterproof.
That distinction is important.
If absolutely no movement under water is your definition of waterproof, Twilight Symphony didn’t meet that standard in our test. But if you want an ink capable of surviving accidental moisture while leaving the original writing intact and legible, it performed extremely well.
Compared with many decorative shimmer inks, that’s a significant advantage.
Special Properties: Permanent Ink Meets Chameleon Shimmer
Here’s where Twilight Symphony earns its place in the memorable-ink category.
The ink combines:
- A dark violet-to-indigo base
- Blue chameleon shimmer
- Pigmented formulation
- Water resistance
- Lightfast properties
Ferris Wheel Press describes the shimmer as blue with a luminous color-shifting effect under changing light. We found the shimmer easy to spot but appropriately restrained.
The darker base also helps. Here’s a look at the base ink color swatched without the shimmer mixed in:

Our test showed Twilight Symphony as a deep violet-indigo with luminous blue chameleon shimmer.
Shimmer can sometimes overpower a pale ink or make everyday writing harder to read. Twilight Symphony avoids that problem because its violet-indigo writing remains strong and legible underneath the sparkle.
Instead of shimmer being the entire performance, it feels more like stage lighting.
Feathering or Bleeding
We found no feathering and no bleed through on Rhodia paper.
That’s particularly encouraging considering the specialized formulation.
Even the darker, wetter areas of our writing remained clean on the page, supporting Twilight Symphony’s potential as more than a special-occasion ink.
As always, more absorbent office or copy paper may behave differently.
Ferris Wheel Press Twilight Symphony Ink Review: Final Thoughts
Twilight Symphony is unusual in the best possible way. It is, of course, worthy of being considered a “stand out” as one of Ferris Wheel Press’s lovely shimmer fountain pen inks. But that’s nowhere near the end of the story. It’s not even close to being the main part of the story.
Ferris Wheel Press could have created its first permanent ink as a sensible black or business blue and called it a day.

A close look at Twilight Symphony reveals luminous blue chameleon shimmer across its deep violet-indigo base.
Instead, they made it violet-indigo with blue chameleon shimmer.
That tells you almost everything you need to know.
In our testing, the color was dark and highly readable, the shimmer was clearly visible without becoming overwhelming, dry time came in at approximately 10 seconds, and we saw no feathering or bleed through on Rhodia paper.
Most impressive was the water test. We did see slight running and line distortion, so we would describe the ink as water-resistant rather than absolutely waterproof. But the original writing remained exceptionally easy to see.
For journaling, archival-minded creative work, correspondence you’d like to preserve, signing, artwork, or everyday writing that deserves a little more drama, Twilight Symphony offers a rare combination.
Permanent doesn’t have to mean boring.
Apparently, it can wear chameleon shimmer to the concert.
