Meet the Ink Maker

Dominant Industry Pearl Series fountain pen inks
The Dominant Industry Pearl Series of inks features shimmering fountain pen ink options. Standard Series inks have no shimmer.

Dominant Industry, a South Korean ink maker known for its experimental shimmer and sheen formulations, continues to impress with its Standard Series inks; they’re simple, elegant, and full of character. The brand’s craftsmanship balances performance with artistry, and today’s featured ink proves that even a classic color like black can have surprising depth.

Get to Know the Ink Series

The Dominant Industry Standard Ink Series focuses on timeless colors formulated with the same high quality and saturation that define the brand’s more artistic lines. These inks skip the shimmer and sparkle but retain the brand’s smooth flow, rich tone, and beautiful presentation. Perfect for those who want the writing experience without the special effects. This Week’s Featured Ink: Dominant Industry Base Black

dominant industry base black ink review cotton swab test.

Our Dominant Industry Base Black ink review explores a fountain pen staple; the versatile and expressive black ink. While “Base Black” might sound utilitarian, this formula offers subtle complexity. It lays down as a true black on the page but can soften into a dark grey tone depending on nib size, paper, and drying time.

Ink Test Results

(All ink tests shown in the images below were created using a J. Herbin glass dip pen — comparable to a medium nib — on Rhodia lined paper.)

Ink Bottle and Packaging

Dominant Industry’s packaging never disappoints. The droplet-shaped glass bottle is sleek and surprisingly stable — it doesn’t tip easily despite its curved form. The wide mouth makes it easy to fill fountain pens or dip pens without spills. Each bottle arrives tucked into a drawstring dust bag and housed in a sturdy kraft box with a minimalist label that doesn’t display the ink color. A plastic dropper is included, adding to the brand’s thoughtful and premium presentation.

  • Paper: Rhodia Lined Paper

1-Dip Test

During our standard 1-Dip Test, Dominant Industry Base Black easily wrote all three test lines with ink to spare. The ink’s wet flow gives it consistent coverage and a smooth writing experience without skipping or pooling.

Dry Time: How Fast Did the Ink Dry?

Dominant Industry Base Black ink review dry time test results.

This is a wet ink with a dry time of approximately 20 seconds on Rhodia paper. As you can see from the “Dry Time” test results, the ink remained wet through the first 10 seconds, finally setting around the 20-second mark. Writers using smooth or coated papers may want to allow a bit of extra time before touching the page.

Water Test

We applied water to the dried ink after a 3-minute wait to gauge durability. The water test showed significant ink running and line distortion, especially at the top of the test area. While no bleed-through occurred, several lines became faint or disappeared due to the ink’s wet nature. This result confirms that Base Black isn’t water-resistant; it’s designed for rich flow, not archival permanence.

Special Properties

Base Black shows a deep, saturated black tone with a subtle grey undertone in diluted or water-affected areas. The ink’s sheen is minimal but visible under direct light, lending a soft sheen finish that elevates it above flat blacks. No shimmer particles are present; this ink is all about depth and tone.

Feathering or Bleeding

No feathering or bleed-through was observed on Rhodia paper. Even during our cotton swab test, the ink stayed crisp and clean within the lines. Its wet flow can darken fibers slightly on thinner paper types, but premium paper handles it beautifully.

Final Thoughts

The Dominant Industry Base Black ink is a sophisticated, high-performing black that offers flexibility. It can appear jet black or charcoal grey, depending on how you use it. The droplet-shaped bottle is as functional as it is beautiful, and the included accessories make it gift-ready. While the ink’s long dry time and lack of water resistance may limit its practicality for quick notes or office use, it shines for journaling, sketching, and calligraphy.

If you enjoy a rich, expressive black with a painterly flow, this one deserves a place on your desk.

FAQ: All About Fountain Pen Ink & The Pens They Ink Up

Yellow background mimicking graph paper with a title that reads Fountain Pen FAQ and a subtitle that encourages viewers and readers to ask Pen Chalet anything about luxury pens.

Q: Is Dominant Industry Base Black waterproof?
A: No. It’s a wet, dye-based ink that shows significant running during the water test.

Q: How does it compare to other black inks?
A: It’s deeper than standard grey-blacks but softer than carbon-based waterproof blacks. Expect rich depth with elegant grey shading.

Q: What’s the best pen for this ink?
A: A fine or medium nib works well to balance its wet flow. Glass dip pens and piston fillers both perform beautifully.

Q: Can this ink be used for art or washes?
A: Absolutely. Its soft grey shift under water makes it excellent for ink washes and sketching effects.

Q: What if I need black ink, but this one doesn’t sound right for me?
A: No problem, there are many to choose from. Explore our black fountain pen ink collection. Or check out some other fountain pen enthusiasts favorite black inks in the Fountain Pen Network forum.

Have you tried HP 32? I use grids under that and have had pretty good luck with most inks.

That is a really nice black. I liked that it’s not too dark. I’ve been looking for a really deep brown. I want it to have more variation than just a consistent dark brown. Any recommendations?

Great overview of this ink 🙂 I usually only use Platinum Carbon Black when I need a strong black since I mostly use black ink for artwork and need it to be waterproof. I recently tried Private Reserve’s Velvet Black and was actually surprised by how much character a black ink can have — the subtle shading was really nice. But I’m definitely a color ink junkie, so I’m not sure how much I’d use a premium bold black that isn’t waterproof. Maybe the sheen adds enough interest, or maybe it could work well for mixing with some of their… Read more »

Black is too plain for me but sometimes I’ll collect it if it’s a part of a set/line of inks (not so much for the color itself, but for the properties like dryness/wetness, sheen/no sheen, etc.). Mountain of Ink and the Pen Chalet blog are great informative resources for inks. Thank you for sharing your analysis!

I’ve tended to stay away from black inks in the past (not really sure why) but this ink is interesting enough that I may just have to pick up a bottle to play with.
