Organics Studio Ernest’s Vintage Blue Merle Ink: Organics Studio is a fairly new ink company that hit the fine writing community by storm a few years ago with their new and exciting hand crafted inks. Unfortunately, Tyler (the owner and creator of Organics Studios) went into hiatus for a couple of years while in graduate school. Fortunately, after graduate school, Tyler’s passion for his unique inks came back in full force and Organics Studio is back and here to stay.
Organics Studio Ernest Hemingway Blue Merle Ink
Ernest’s Vintage Blue Merle ink is part of both the Organics Studio Ernest’s Vintage Writing Fluid Inks as well as the Masters of Writing Series of inks. The Vintage series of inks are made using vintage, yet simple ink formulas that are PH neutral, and hassle or clog free inks. Other series are the Elements Ink Series, Ernest’s Vintage Ink Series and Masters of Science Ink Series.
Organics Studio Ernest’s Vintage Blue Merle ink is a hand-crafted gray-blue fountain pen ink. We found the ink to be more gray with a hint of blue, a bit misleading based upon the name of the ink. The ink’s characteristics were good. It is a medium saturation ink and performs well on the Rhodia paper we used.

We noticed the following characteristics while testing Organics Studio Ernest’s Vintage Blue Merle ink that you may find useful:
Testing Factors
For this review we used French made Rhodia dot pad paper with a J. Herbin Glass Dip Pen. The dip pen has a tip that is similar to a fine nib fountain pen.
Bottle Sizes
All Organics Studio inks come in a good size simple plastic bottle. The 55 ml. clear bottle has a wide plastic lid, but has no frills or extravagant design features. Each bottle of ink comes with a distinctive label identifying the color of the ink, plus some interesting facts about the series of ink and its characteristics.
Cost
Organics Studio Ernest’s Vintage Blue Merle ink retails for $16.00 but is only $12.80 at Pen Chalet. Thus, Organics Studio Ernest’s Vintage Blue Merle ink is a lower mid range priced ink. A good value for being a handmade and exclusively made in America.
Dry Time
We experienced a quick dry time of approximately 4-5 seconds using Organics Studio Ernest’s Vintage Blue Merle ink with the glass dip pen on Rhodia paper.
Bleed Through
Using Organics Studio Ernest’s Vintage Blue Merle ink we experienced absolutely no bleeding on the Rhodia dot pad paper.
Feathering
During our review, we experienced very clean and distinct lines without any feathering on Rhodia dot pad paper. Even during the water test, the lines remained clear and distinct. Organics Studio Ernest’s Vintage Blue Merle ink held up well.
Water Test
During our water test, where we ran a wet cotton swab over a Organics Studio Ernest’s Vintage Blue Merle ink sample, the ink held up very well. No feathering, bleeding or other line distortion was noticed. There was some color smearing, but that is to be expected with non-water proof water based ink. Although this ink is not waterproof, it will hold up reasonably well under an accidental spill or rain.
Shading
A nice characteristic of Organics Studio Ernest’s Vintage Blue Merle ink is that it will produce some shading. We noticed light to dark gray color depending on the wetness of the line being put to paper.
Conclusion about the Organics Studio Ernest’s Vintage Blue Merle ink
We have really enjoyed using Organics Studio inks and Blue Merle is no exception. Other than the name indicating a blue color while the ink is grayer in nature, the ink performed well. Its color is a nice dark gray, which can be used in either the home or office as everyday ink. The price is reasonable, the dry time quick and the handcrafted limited production of the ink makes it unique and interesting to use.
