Pelikan 4001 Turquoise Ink Review

In today’s post sharing the Pelikan 4001 Turquoise ink review (with images this time), you’ll enjoy highlights of a classic ink that you may not have run across before.

If you’ve been in the fountain pen world for more than five minutes, you’ve seen Pelikan’s classic 4001 inks floating around. This Pelikan 4001 Turquoise ink review is all about one of the most approachable, budget-friendly turquoise options on the market: office-safe, easygoing, and quietly old-school in the best way.

Meet Pelikan: The Mind Behind 4001 Inks

Pelikan Pens is one of those legacy brands that just… never left the chat. Their 4001 fountain pen inks are the “everyday workhorse” line: affordable, reliable, and made to keep your pens happy whether you’re journaling, note-taking, or signing off on something official.

If Pelikan Edelstein is the fancy dinner reservation, Pelikan 4001 is the neighborhood spot you actually visit three times a week. Same heritage, simpler presentation, friendlier price.

Get to Know the Pelikan 4001 Ink Series

The Pelikan 4001 ink series is built around a few key traits:

  • Easy-to-clean, pen-friendly formulas
  • Classic colors suitable for school, office, and home
  • Bottles and pricing designed for regular, heavy use

Turquoise is a longtime member of the lineup, sitting in that space between blue and green: more fun than a standard blue, but still tame enough for everyday writing in many contexts.

Pelikan 4001 Turquoise Ink Review: First Impressions

During this week’s Pelikan 4001 Turquoise ink review, this is what we saw on the page:

  • With the dip pen, Pelikan 4001 Turquoise leans vibrant medium blue more than obvious turquoise.
  • The turquoise character shows up more clearly in cotton swab tests and in the water test where the dyes spread and reveal the underlying blue-green personality.
  • On the page, it’s smooth, readable, and easy on the eyes. No effort required to decipher your writing, even in quick notes.

If you’re expecting a wild, neon turquoise, this isn’t that ink. This is a civilized, office-appropriate blue that just happens to have a turquoise soul.

The test results from today’s Pelikan 4001 Turquoise ink review.

General performance:

  • Flow: Smooth and consistent, no hard starts with the dip pen
  • Saturation: Solid everyday saturation; not washed out, not overly dense
  • Legibility: Excellent; the color pops well against white paper

This is what we’d call a starter-friendly fountain pen ink: easy to control, easy to read, and low drama.

Pelikan 4001 Turquoise Ink Bottle & Packaging

Pelikan 4001 Turquoise ink review: the box.

Pelikan 4001 Turquoise ink review: the box.

Pelikan 4001 packaging is all business:

  • Box:
    • Square-shaped carton that fits the bottle snugly
    • Not as elaborate or “display-ready” as Pelikan Edelstein inks
    • Still practical and protective for storage and shipping

The Pelikan 4001 fountain pen ink bottle.

  • Bottle:
    • Clear glass bottle
    • Wide opening that makes it easy to fill most pens without acrobatics
    • Wide, stable base so it sits securely on your desk
    • Simple cap that’s easy to grip and open

If Edelstein is designed to look gorgeous on your shelf, 4001 is designed to sit on your desk and get used. And honestly, for a daily ink, the 4001 bottle is a win: solid, stable, and very user-friendly.

Featured: J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen.

During this Pelikan 4001 Turquoise ink review, we used:

  • J. Herbin glass dip pen
  • Rhodia notebook (lined)

If you’re recreating the test at home and want similar results, pairing Pelikan 4001 Turquoise with Rhodia paper or other fountain pen-friendly pads is a great place to start.

1-Dip Test: How Far Does One Dip Go?

We love the 1-dip test because it gives a quick sense of an ink’s flow and saturation.

  • With a single dip in Pelikan 4001 Turquoise, the glass dip pen wrote all three standard test lines with ink still left on the nib.
  • No drop-off into ghost writing at the end of the lines.
  • Lines stayed consistent in color and legibility.

Verdict: Excellent performance on the 1-dip test. This ink is not stingy.

Dry Time: How Fast Did Pelikan 4001 Turquoise Ink Dry?

Dry Test results: How fast does Pelikan 4001 Turquoise ink dry?

Dry Test results: How fast does Pelikan 4001 Turquoise ink dry?

On Rhodia lined paper with a medium-like glass dip pen, we saw:

  • Approximate dry time: ~15 seconds

That puts Pelikan 4001 Turquoise in the moderate category:

  • Not a lightning-fast dry ink
  • Not a slow, smeary diva either

If you’re a lefty overwriter or a very fast note-taker on smoother paper, you’ll want to give it a brief moment before dragging your hand through your notes. On more absorbent paper, you may see slightly faster dry times.

Water Test: Is Pelikan 4001 Turquoise Water-Resistant?

Pelikan 4001 Turquoise Ink Review Water Test results.

Pelikan 4001 Turquoise Ink Review Water Test results.

Short version: Nope.

During the water test:

  • There was significant running of ink after exposure to water.
  • Visible line distortion and feathering showed up along the top of the test area.
  • Some lines at the top of the test essentially disappeared as the ink washed away.
  • Lines at the bottom of the test remained visible, but still showed smearing.
  • No bleedthrough to the back of the Rhodia paper, which is nice, but in terms of water-resistance, this ink is not a survivor.

If you need waterproof or even water-resistant fountain pen inks, Pelikan 4001 Turquoise is not the choice. Think: journaling, note-taking, everyday writing, not archival documents or checks.

Shading & Special Properties of Pelikan 4001 Turquoise

Let’s talk personality:

  • Color:
    • On the page with a dip pen, it reads as a vibrant blue.
    • The “turquoise” character becomes more apparent in swabs and water-disturbed areas where the blue and green components separate a bit.
  • Shading:
    • Pelikan 4001 Turquoise can show subtle shading, especially in slightly drier or finer nibs.
    • With our glass dip pen (medium-like and fairly wet), the shading is present but not dramatic.
  • Sheen:
    • No noticeable sheen in our test setup.
  • Shimmer:
    • None. This is a straightforward dye-based ink, not a shimmer formula.

If you love wild sheening or shimmering turquoise fountain pen inks, this isn’t that party. This is your reliable, low-maintenance blue-turquoise everyday ink. If you’re still on the hunt for the perfect turquoise fountain pen ink, never fear, there are many options.

Feathering or Bleeding?

On Rhodia lined paper:

  • Feathering: None observed. Lines remained crisp and well-defined.
  • Bleedthrough: None. The reverse side of the page stayed clean and perfectly usable.

On cheaper paper, you may see different behavior (as with almost any ink), but on decent fountain pen paper, Pelikan 4001 Turquoise is very well-behaved.

Final Thoughts: Is Pelikan 4001 Turquoise Ink Worth It?

Here’s the elevator pitch:

  • High quality Pelikan ink at a fraction of the Edelstein price
  • Smooth, consistent flow and good performance in our tests
  • Sturdy glass bottle with a wide opening and stable footprint
  • Easy-to-read blue-leaning turquoise that looks professional but still a little playful
  • Not water-resistant, so don’t count on it for important documents or exposed notebooks

If you want a budget-friendly turquoise fountain pen ink from a legacy brand, Pelikan 4001 Turquoise is a fantastic option. It’s especially appealing if you love Pelikan inks but don’t need the extra cost or luxury presentation of the Edelstein line.

As always, if there’s another turquoise (or any color) you’re dying to see on the testing table, tell us which ink you want to see next. We love hearing from the fountain pen community, ink addicts, pen addicts, and everyone in between.

Pelikan 4001 Turquoise Ink Review FAQ

Q: Is Pelikan 4001 Turquoise a true turquoise or more of a blue?
A: On the page with a medium-like glass dip pen, it reads more like a vibrant blue with turquoise tendencies. The turquoise character shows more strongly in swabs and water-disturbed areas, but in normal writing it leans blue.

Q: Is Pelikan 4001 Turquoise ink water-resistant?
A: No. Our water test showed significant running, line distortion, and partial loss of the writing at the top of the test area. It’s fine for everyday writing, but not ideal for anything that must survive spills or weather.

Q: How does Pelikan 4001 Turquoise compare to Pelikan Edelstein inks?
A: Pelikan 4001 Turquoise offers similar overall quality in terms of flow and reliability, but with simpler packaging and a much lower price point. Edelstein is the premium, more luxurious line with fancier presentation and different color options.

Q: Is Pelikan 4001 Turquoise a good starter ink?
A: Yes. It behaves well on fountain pen-friendly paper, has a moderate dry time (~15 seconds on Rhodia), doesn’t feather or bleed in our tests, and cleans more easily than heavily saturated or shimmering inks. It’s a solid starter-friendly fountain pen ink.

Q: What kind of pens and papers pair well with Pelikan 4001 Turquoise?
A: It should work nicely in most standard fountain pens. For the best experience, pair it with Rhodia notebooks or other fountain pen-friendly paper (Clairefontaine, Wearingeul Reservoir, Dominant Industry Takasago, etc.) to enjoy clean lines, subtle shading, and minimal bleedthrough.

Are there any pictures of the swatch? I don’t see any on the blog post (maybe it’s not loading properly for me) and the website only shows a picture of the bottle.

Yes I would like to see what the color looks like especially since it says it is not a neon turquoise. Also a lower price sounds good to me.

Saw a swatch on another blog site and was pleasantly surprised at the shade & darkness of the ink. Nice to see that it’s a very affordable ink, too! 🙂

Appreciate the review. As a ‘workhorse’ ink, I would like to know how this performs (feathering, bleed through, etc.) on regular office copy paper. Thank you.

I don’t think I really react a turquoise ink, but if I was in the market, this one looks really nice.
