Platinum Plaisir Fountain Pen Review
Product Review of the Platinum Plaisir Fountain Pens
When asked which pen is the best starter fountain pen I would bet most fountain pen enthusiasts would recommend either the Lamy Safari or the Pilot Metropolitan. Both of these fountain pens are great starter pens and very popular but there are other options within the same price range($15-$30). One such great starter pen is the Platinum Plaisir fountain pen.Although the Platinum Pen Company also makes the Platinum Preppy fountain pen which retails for $3.96, this review will focus on the Platinum Plaisir fountain pen. We will discuss what makes this pen so great, what it is made from, what comes with the pen and how it compares.

What's Included
Not much. The Platinum Plaisir fountain pen comes with no packaging, just a plastic sleeve and the initial presentation leaves much to be desired. The pen is a cartridge style fountain pen and one Platinum ink cartridge is included but no ink converter. You can purchase a Platinum 500 ink converter for the pen if you want to use bottled inks. The Platinum pens use their own proprietary ink cartridges and converters. They do however have a small conversion adapter if you want to use standard international ink cartridges. As far as the competition, the Lamy Safari does not come with an ink converter while the Pilot Metropolitan does.
Anatomy - Platinum Plaisir Fountain Pen Review
The Platinum Plaisir fountain pen is made from an aluminum cap and barrel with a clear plastic grip section. One nice thing about the clear grip section is you are able to see the feed and the ink within the fountain pen. This gives you the ability to see the ink level and color of the ink. With the Lamy Safari fountain pen there is a small window within the barrel of the pen to view the ink and the Pilot Metropolitan does not come with a window. The aluminum body and cap have a high gloss finish that comes in several different colors and chrome colored accents. The cap on the Platinum Plaisir fountain pen is a snap-off cap that has a chrome clip with a center stripe matching the color of the pen. A nice wide chrome colored aluminum band is at the bottom of the cap. The Pilot Metropolitan is lightweight aluminum while the Lamy Safari is plastic. All three pens are fairly lightweight fountain pens.
There is very little in the way of branding on the pen. Around the chrome band on the bottom of the cap is engraved "Platinum Japan" on one side and "Plaisir" on the other. It doesn't stand out much and actually just looks like a design engraved on the cap until closer inspection.

So the nib looks great, but how does it write? The one feature that I really like on the Platinum pens is their patented "Slip & Seal" technology. One problem with fountain pens is when they are not used over extended periods of time the ink in the pen can dry out. I have left some fountain pens just a week and they have dried out on me. Once this happens you have to clean or flush the pen to get it working again. Platinum Pens claim their "Slip & Seal" cap keeps their fountain pens from drying out, allowing you to leave the pen filled for long periods of time. I wanted to test this so I purposely filled the Platinum Plaisir fountain pen and left it for weeks without using it. Every time I grabbed the pen to use it, the ink was fresh and ready to write. I have not had an issue with it drying out on me at all. The pen writes smoothly and lays down plenty of ink and I enjoy the way it writes. The Platinum "Slip & Seal" feature comes with every Platinum fountain pen including the inexpensive pens like the Platinum Preppy and the Platinum Plaisir. This feature reduces maintenance and is especially great for a beginner or starter fountain pen.
Pros of the Platinum Plaisir fountain pen:
- Price - Great starter pen. Fairly inexpensive fountain pen.
- Slip & Seal - Fountain pen lasts longer without drying out.
- Writing/Nib - Smooth wet nib. Color coordinated nib to match the pen cap and body.
Cons of the Platinum Plaisir fountain pen:
- Packaging - No packaging and no ink converter included with the pen. Not a big deal, it's about the pen not the packaging, right.
Conclusion - Platinum Plaisir Fountain Pen Review
The Platinum Plaisir fountain pen is not impressive on first look with it's lack of packaging. The pen itself though has a nice glossy finish and sturdy aluminum construction. The fountain pen writes well and with the "Slip & Seal" it is always ready and lays down a nice wet line. If you are looking for a great inexpensive fountain pen I highly recommend the Platinum Plaisir fountain pen.Buy the Platinum Plaisir Fountain Pens

These are basically an upgrade from the Preppy and Prefounte and everyone should have an idea what they are buying. These are metal bodied pens and come in an array of colors. The pen is classically styled and shaped making it fit seamlessly in the hand. The section is the same as the Preppy as is the nib and these are all interchangeable which gives the user quite a bit of versatility in choices. The writing experience is just fine but you do need to be aware that a Japanese fine is much finer than a Western or European nib. This can make a difference with how the nib feels on paper. Besides that, these pens fit comfortably in the pocket and look fairly chic so they can participate out there in public without the garishness of the Preppy. Watch for sales and nab an even better value. Great little pen!

I know it's technically an upgraded Preppy, but it feels much more over all satisfying than its cheaper brethren. It should be able to take a lot of abuse. The black mist version has a pebbled texture too.

I have other Plaisir pens, so I was confident I would be happy with this one. I ordered the Red Amabie. I knew nothing about what an "amabie" was, so finding the little engraving of an amabie was a delight! (For other curious folk: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amabie) The engraving on the pen is the same as the image on the top of the Wikipedia page.
It was a surprise and a delight, and I'm glad I ordered it, even though I didn't know what it was at the time of order.
