Pilot Namiki Falcon Fountain Pen Review

Product Review of the Pilot Falcon Collection Fountain Pens

I recently wrote a blog for Pen Chalet about the new Pilot Namiki Falcon when the new black with rhodium (chrome) trim pen was released. However, I thought it was time to review my falcon after 6 months of personal use and enjoyment.

I own and use my Pilot Namiki Falcon fountain pen on a regular basis. I waited until the black with rhodium trim pen was released because I personally like the chrome look better than gold. I have seen and watched the Falcon become one of the best sellers for Pen Chalet, and wondered what all the fuss was about. Believe the hype, the Falcon is truly an amazing fountain pen. The Pilot Namiki Falcon has classic simplistic design and look, whether in gold or chrome, with beautiful lines. I would call it a medium width pen, not as bulky as some of my other pens, but is very comfortable to use. I have only used the converter fill system and have never had a problem with the ink intake.

The ink flow from my medium 14K nib is perfect, even when not used for a few days. I have been very happy with all aspects of this pen and would highly recommend it. The flex nib took some time to get used to what it can do and the pressure that is needed, but figured it out without any problems.

Pros to the Namiki Falcon fountain pen:
  • Cost, under $200 for a 14K nib fountain pen. Price is super for what you get.
  • Ink flow has been super.
  • Classic look and slim feel in hand.
  • Converter fill system works flawlessly.
  • Flex Nib (unique experience)

Cons to the Namiki Falcon fountain pen:
  • Limited colors (only available in black with either gold or rhodium trim), although a Red Falcon is scheduled to be released later this year!
  • Flex Nib (may take time to get used to).
  • Presentation box is simple (although helps keep cost down).

Conclusion of the Namiki Falcon Review

My Overall grade for the Pilot Namiki Falcon (grade 1-10, with ten being the highest, grading value, ink flow, options and overall experience) is a 9. I highly recommend this pen to any new fountain pen lover.

I bought the purple Falcon in Fine. Nice pen. It is a thin pen. I am not good at flexing and find you have to press down a bit to flex. Without flexing it writes a nice fine line.

This pen has changed my life.
It is the first gold nib pen I purchased. It writes so smooth that t is hard to put it into words.

Definitely a great price for such a nice pen.

I've been a huge fan of the Namiki-Pilot Falcon pens for over 20 years. I had my orders for both the blue and purple versions in early. They were worth it! The purple is a bright fuschia-toned purple that refuses to be ignored. The blue is a divine violet-leaning blue-my absolute favorite! Having secured two more extra fines to my Falcon collection, I'll be picking up two more in the Fine nibs next. You can't go wrong with these if you love moderate but responsive flex in 14k gold nibs at a fabulous price-point. Now if Pilot can just do the fun colors in the Custom 912 fountain pen...Thanks PenChalet for getting these to me quickly at such great prices! A Loyal Customer.

Just purchased the 2 new brilliant, long awaited colors, blue and purple in the extra fine soft nibs. I will likely add a fine in each as well. Wonderfully fun colors to finally go with one of the finest nibs available at one the prices too. The blue is a bright almost periwinkle blue that practically glows. The purple is much brighter and a bit more fuschia-leaning than I expected. Both are radiant. If lack of color choice was the only thing stopping you from purchasing one of these amazing pens, now you've no excuses. The fine nib has long been the most popular for its ease of use and noticeable flair. No matter what width you prefer, the Falcon nib is iconic for its performance in a pen that is notably a fantastic bargain for a soft and fairly flexible 14k gold nib that is long on fun!

This pen writes absolutely beautifully. The soft, smooth nib is so delightful. It is quite light, and is perfect for long writing sessions. I took off a star from the style because it is not the most aesthetically pleasing pen I own, but the writing experience is absolutely spectacular.

I got the Pilot Falcon Black/Rhodium with a Fine nib. This pen feel really nice in my hand, balances well posted, comfortable for writing for longer time periods. The nib has a little spring, not very much line variation. This pen is a very consistant writer. I haven't had any hard starts, or skips since I purchased it.

Bought this pen specifically for drawing. Was worried that extra fine would be too scratchy. Perfect for sketching but a bit too fine for writing for me. Good line variation with little pressure. I have been using it every day for just under a week now and it’s already less scratchy. Can’t imagine getting these line variations with any other fountain or disposable pen.

I have about 10 steel nib fountain pens. This was my first gold nib pen. I may be in my honeymoon phase, but I really can feel the difference with the gold nib and love my new pen so much.
