Pilot Namiki Falcon Fountain Pen Review

Product Review of the Pilot Falcon Collection Fountain Pens

I recently wrote a blog for Pen Chalet about the new Pilot Namiki Falcon when the new black with rhodium (chrome) trim pen was released. However, I thought it was time to review my falcon after 6 months of personal use and enjoyment.

I own and use my Pilot Namiki Falcon fountain pen on a regular basis. I waited until the black with rhodium trim pen was released because I personally like the chrome look better than gold. I have seen and watched the Falcon become one of the best sellers for Pen Chalet, and wondered what all the fuss was about. Believe the hype, the Falcon is truly an amazing fountain pen. The Pilot Namiki Falcon has classic simplistic design and look, whether in gold or chrome, with beautiful lines. I would call it a medium width pen, not as bulky as some of my other pens, but is very comfortable to use. I have only used the converter fill system and have never had a problem with the ink intake.

The ink flow from my medium 14K nib is perfect, even when not used for a few days. I have been very happy with all aspects of this pen and would highly recommend it. The flex nib took some time to get used to what it can do and the pressure that is needed, but figured it out without any problems.

Pros to the Namiki Falcon fountain pen:
  • Cost, under $200 for a 14K nib fountain pen. Price is super for what you get.
  • Ink flow has been super.
  • Classic look and slim feel in hand.
  • Converter fill system works flawlessly.
  • Flex Nib (unique experience)

Cons to the Namiki Falcon fountain pen:
  • Limited colors (only available in black with either gold or rhodium trim), although a Red Falcon is scheduled to be released later this year!
  • Flex Nib (may take time to get used to).
  • Presentation box is simple (although helps keep cost down).

Conclusion of the Namiki Falcon Review

My Overall grade for the Pilot Namiki Falcon (grade 1-10, with ten being the highest, grading value, ink flow, options and overall experience) is a 9. I highly recommend this pen to any new fountain pen lover.

Bought this in a Fine and Extra Fine, and both needed a bit of smoothing. But once done, they are a delight to write with. Though not a true flex nib, they have a lot of spring to them and do produce considerable line variation.

I am extremely happy with my purchase of the Pilot Falcon. I purchased the extra fine and with the 14k gold soft flex nib it performs beautifully. This has become my favorite pen out of my collection. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes flexible nib pens.

I don't have enough paper and writing material to keep writing with this pen.....This pen (Broad nib) is deliciously smooth on almost any paper. The stroke variations due to the flex are beautiful! The deep red color really adds to the entire effect!

This pen is a well-known, well-regarded classic, and it lives up to its reputation. I don't really have much to add that hasn't been said, but really if you're considering a Pilot Falcon, go for it - I can confirm that yes, it is the Pilot Falcon: consistent Pilot quality, with a wiggly nib :)

I got the red Pilot Falcon SM. I was surprised at how lightweight it is. At first it was off-putting but when I got to page 14 on size A5 paper and noticed no hand cramping or fatigue, I became a fan of it's diminutive weight.

The Soft Medium nib is a soft dream with which to write. Flexing is easy but still has enough resistance so it's unlikely to happen on accident. Because it's a medium the difference in line weights is not as noticable as it would be with a more narrow nib. Because it's a soft nib and not a flex nib, this further closes the gap on line widths for a medium.

Writes wet and stays wet uncapped for an impressive amount of time. Threads on section are low, rounded smoothly and gentle. Posts easily and securely.

My pen came with a cosmetic imperfection on the black grip between the rhodium band and the end of the section. (I'll try to include a pic showing at least part of it.) I can't tell if it's a scratch or a wiped smudge of adhesive. Before inking it, I tried to rub it off using a new cloth diaper but there was no change.

As it doesn't affect the performance and it isn't a glaringly obvious "oops" I decided to not bother exchanging it. Being that this purchase was not from a second-hand source or a scratch-n-dent, etc, I think it should be mentioned, especially at the price range it's in. I have to say that with Pilot's exemplary quality control and customer service, I'm quite surprised that this one got by. That makes this Pilot Falcon SM a little more special.

Note--I'm not seeing an option to post pics. Also be aware that this medium nib is more like a western M or a western B, even with regular, non-flex writing.

Falcon is a beautiful pen. I'm new to fountain pens so don't have lots of comparisons, but I enjoy writing with it. Pen Chalet had the best price on this pen.

This was my first gold nib pen, and I wasn't disappointed. The Soft Extra-Fine is a bit scratchy, but writes well on cheap paper. It's a little flexy too, so there's plenty of line variation when you want it. The Soft Fine or even Soft Medium might be a bit better for normal writing, but the SEF is good for my chicken scratch. Because of the downward curve of the nib, I have to make a conscious effort to hold the pen at a shallower angle to the paper. All said, this is a great pen!
