Platinum President Fountain Pen Review

Product Review of the Platinum President Fountain Pens

Platinum Pen Company, is one of the big three Japanese pen manufactures (the other two being Pilot/Namiki and Sailor), which produce high quality fountain pens with exceptional nibs.

My recent experience in using my Platinum President Demonstrator pen, may have elevated Platinum to the top of these three Japanese pen manufacturers.

Platinum President Fountain Pen Review

This review is about the Platinum President Transparent Fountain Pen with a medium nib (actual model is PTB 28000#4 Transparent Rhodium Trim Medium Nib), which I have been using for about 2 weeks now. The Platinum President series of pens come in a wide variety of materials, colors and even price points which retail between $135 and $375.

The Platinum President Transparent TPB 28000#4 is at the top range of the President series of pens and retails for $375, but is well worth the price as hopefully you also agree by continuing to read.

I will be honest, I owned multiple Sailor and Pilot fountain pens before I ever owned a Platinum pen, as it may be regarded as less well known than the other two manufacturers. This was a mistake on my part, as I have ended up absolutely loving my platinum pens (I also have a Platinum 3776 Century with a music nib), probably more so than my Sailor Professional Gear, Pilot Falcon and Vanishing Point, which in their own right are also fantastic pens.

Size: The Platinum President (PTB 28000 #4) is a full sized pen with a rounded base and cap, and is slightly larger than the Platinum 3776 pen. Capped the Platinum President (PTB 28000 #4) is 5 5/8 inches in length, posted 6 1/4 inches long and un-posted 4 and 7/8 inches long. It’s a perfect length to use un-posted, which is my preference, but not too long or heavy to use posted if you prefer. The weight is perfect at about 28 grams, not too light nor too heavy for my preference.

Color: Although the Platinum President series of pens comes in a wide range of color and materials, the Platinum President (PTB 28000 #4) is a demonstrator type pen, which comes in either rhodium or gold trim. I chose the rhodium trim as I feel that it complements the two toned 18K nib and Platinum 500 Gold converter perfectly. The Cap is actually transparent with rhodium trim, but comes with a slightly frosted opaque sleeve to house the nib. At the base of the clip is a rhodium bad with the words Platinum President Japan written on it. The base is also transparent, which allows the beautiful Platinum Gold 500 converter (yes I said a converter is beautiful) to be fully displayed including the color of ink being used. At the top of the base just under the nib is a metallic brushed silver band which will allow the pen to be used without scratching the transparent barrel. This pen, with its variety of colors and materials is truly one of the most unique and pretty demonstrators that I have ever seen. It has become one of my favorite every day pens and definitely will grab someone’s attention and make a statement.

Platinum President Nib ReviewNib: Platinum Pen Company, is well known, as are the other two major Japanese pen companies (Sailor and Pilot) for their exceptional nibs. My Platinum President (PTB 28000 #4) comes with a medium 18K gold two toned nib. Platinum fountain pen nibs, as with most Japanese pens, usually run a little bit small when compared to other pen companies, so that my medium nib writes like a fine from other pen companies. The medium nib is extremely smooth with easy flow and fills flawlessly with a cartridge/converter system. The Platinum President fountain pens come with Platinum’s “Slip & Seal” mechanism, which prevents the pen from drying out even when not being used daily. I can attest to this technology working as I have not ever had a problem with immediate and perfect ink flow with either of my Platinum fountain pens (the President or the 3776).

Pros to the Platinum President (PTB 28000 #4):
  • Cost, $375 retail for a 18K two toned gold nib is a very reasonable value. For what you get, although in the mid range for most pen lovers, the price is great (especially with Pen Chalet’s 20% discount).
  • Nib, two toned 18K gold Japanese nib is flawless.
  • Multiple options with color, nib size and materials.
  • Slip and Seal mechanism provides consistent ink flow even after a period of non-use.
  • Very unique look for a demonstrator pen.
  • Size is reasonable (width and length) for a full sized pen.
  • Converter fill system works flawlessly and yes its beautiful.

Cons to the Platinum President (PTB 28000 #4):
  • Typical plain Platinum presentation box (but it keeps the cost down).
  • Not as many nib options as the Sailor pen.
  • Twisting the cap onto the barrel sometimes sticks and has to be perfectly aligned.
  • This may be a slight flaw in my particular pen as my other Platinum pens are perfect.
  • Multiple options (size, color, nib size, finishes, etc.) make it hard to focus on a Platinum President you want or makes you want to buy 2-3 of them.

Final Thoughts on the Platinum President Fountain Pen Review

My Overall grade for the Platinum President Transparent Fountain Pen (PTB 28000 #4) (grade 1-10, with ten being the highest, grading value, ink flow, uniqueness, options and overall experience) is a 9.8. I highly recommend this pen, as it has quickly become one of my favorites.

Nice looking pen and the c nib(double broad) is very smooth. Just wish it was a piston pen instead of a converter but that’s just a personal preference.

The pen is fantastic. The “President” nib looks small on the pen but it writes beautifully. Softer and less feedback than a 3776 nib. I could use this pen every day! The capped weight and balance is perfect.

This model Platinum may be my most favorite pen currently in use. It has a 18K President Medium nib that writes like a Western Fine - and it just is lovely in my hand (woman's Medium). I would love to have more of this nib style it's so good! It's also lovely to look at, and is quite light, which I prefer. For the price, one of the very best pens I have ever used, straight out of the box, which is fantastic!

This was my first major top tier pen purchase and I have to say now I understand the hoopla around Japanese Top Tier fountain pens. This pen is simple but beautiful and what a writer. No flaw issues, no hard starts. It just writes and makes you want to write endlessly with this pen.

Platinum is a superb manufacturer.

The President has my brother reliving his childhood of essays written in living ink by hand; perhaps with more ink stained fingers than now.

Quality, perfection and timeless style ... Platinum President

I love my Platinum President pen. The medium is still and fine (just as I expected) and smooth with just a hint of feedback. I believe the pen is well made and a reasonable value. It does not have the slip and seal function of the 3776 but I do enjoy the pen and still use it daily

I have the burgundy President with a broad nib, which is a well made classic style fountain pen. The converter works great and the broad nib is smooth and consistent with perfect flow, although it's probably more comparable to a European medium. It posts securely and that's how I use it, although that isn't really necessary. This has turned out to be my favorite out of all of my Japanese brand pens. Highly recommended by me.

I have used this burgundy Platinum President with a medium nib that writes like an American fine as is typical with Japanese fountain pens. That is exactly what I wanted. This pen has a beautiful nib that writes without tooth. (I love tooth, but sometimes a different feel of nib to paper is just as enjoyable for me.) I don't know how to describe the nib's feel when writing, but I love it. It's different in a subtle way that I can't describe, it just is for me. It's a rigid nib; however, I think I see a little line variation, just a little bit, and enough that it is interesting to me. I waited to write this review because I wanted to try different papers and different inks in this pen. The President has handled everything so well. I've constantly used it because I want to keep writing with it, again and again and again. And then some more. The nib seemed to break in and feel smoother and wetter after a few days of writing with it. The plastic barrel and cap don't feel or look cheap to me. I have small hands, but I've written long letters without experiencing fatigue or discomfort because of the President's size. I have another Platinum, a 3776 Century Sai whose medium (like an American fine) nib has lovely tooth. These pens' nibs, to me, are not at all the same. I love them both and enjoy their different qualities. I waited a long time to save up to get a President. I feel so fortunate to finally have one.

While comfortable to hold and pleasant to they eyes, the nib is not quite as smooth as I would like. Flipping the pen upside down and writing is slightly awkward to operate the ink flow. (Yes I know, it's not meant to be used upside down, just something I judge a pen against.) I like the piston refill; very easy to fill.

Wanted to purchase a fountain pen that had a gold nib but didn't want to spend too much. After watching a review from pen chalet i learned about this Japanese made pen and loved the look so i gave it a try after receiving a coupon code. This pen is well constructed and writes great. I just ordered another Japanese made pen by pilot with a bigger ink capacity hopefully i will get the same level of quality. Pen chalet is great they have great prices, great customer service and reward you with gifts and discounts why go anywhere else ??
