Review of the Platinum 3776 Fountain Pen

Review of the Platinum 3776 Fountain Pen CapPlatinum pens is a Japanese brand and the 3776 fountain pens gets the name from the height of Mount Fuji being 3776 meters. The Sai and Shoji versions of the pen reference to the two of the five lakes near Mount Fuji in Japan. Their clear cap and barrel symbolizing the clear water. With the Platinum 3776 Sai there are only 3000 fountain pens produced.

The Platinum 3776 fountain pen is well made and good quality. The threads on the cap as well as the grip section are tight and well machined. It is one of those pens you can feel and see how well it is built.

There are many features to the Platinum 3776 fountain pen that make it great. One of these is the "Slip & Seal" cap that comes with the pen. On the demonstrator pens you can easily see this mechanism within the cap and how it works. Inside the cap is an "inner cap" with a spring. As you screw the cap on the pen this inner cap meets the front edge of the grip of the pen. The spring then compresses and keeps this inner cap tight against the pen, sealing the nib and keeping if from drying out. This doesn't mean your fountain pen ink will never dry out if the pen is left for extended lengths of time but it does seem to keep the ink fresher longer.

The Platinum 3776 is a cartridge/converter style fountain pen and comes with a Platinum 500 converter included as well as an ink cartridge. The Platinum 500 ink converter is a twist style making it easy to use and holds a good amount of ink.

The size and balance of the pen is good. Since the pen is made of resin it is not too heavy making it able to write with or without the cap posted on the pen. The pen does not feel overly heavy with the cap posted.

Review of the Platinum 3776 Fountain Pen NibThe thing best about the Platinum 3776 fountain pen is the nib. It comes with a 14k gold nib that writes wet and smooth. Like other Japanese pens, he nib tends to run finer so you will want to keep that in mind when selecting a nib.

Pros of the Platinum 3776 Fountain Pen
  • Smooth 14k gold nib
  • "Slip & Seal" Cap

Cons of the Platinum 3776 Fountain Pen
  • Really not any other than it is a cartridge/converter if you prefer piston fill pens.

Platinum 3776 Fountain Pen Review Conclusion

The Platinum 3776 fountain pen is a great pen to write with and isn't that what it is really all about. The nib is very smooth and the cap keeps the ink fresh and ready to use. The pen looks great with it's classic cigar shape design. Overall the Platinum 3776 is a great pen and one of my favorite pens to use. Great value!

I bought this Platinum Century 3776 Sai fountain pen a few years, ago, and I love to use it. The subtle feedback from the nib is sublime. One of my favorite fps. I live the cap's nib's drying out gizmo - it works.

My first Platinum pen and I'm very pleased with it. The 3776 feels very nice in the hand, perhaps a bit small for my tastes but that's just personal preference. Feels well balanced both posted and not.

I had read that Platinum nibs ran a bit dry but my Broad nib is very juicy but not excessively... it lays down a line that's more like a Western medium. I purposely inked it straight out of the box without cleaning or nib inspection and it writes perfectly. I'm on my second ink fill and have yet to see a skip. Nib is on the harder side like a Sailor, but still has a nice ride to it while writing. Everyone seems to always want the softest nib possible, but I can tell you from experience that softness does not equal a quality writing experience.

I priced this pen against 3776s shipped straight from Japan and Pen Chalet had very competitive pricing. Do your homework, but having purchased several pens from Pen Chalet I've been a very happy customer in regards to price, shipping and customer service.

The cool blue hue of the Shoji is understated and so beautiful. The nib was perfect right out of the box. Platinum nibs are known to be amazing writers and this one does not disappoint. A great price on a pen that is very scarce and hard to find. Fast shipping and well packed. Thank you for the fantastic shopping experience.

So ZEN.
I didn't realize how beautiful this pen was until I got it in my hands. Shoji, one of Japan's 5 great lakes and the 3776 signifying the height of Mt Fuji. Platinum does respectful synergy.
One more thing, how do the Japanese make such perfect nibs and pens with great balance? My Montegrappa Parola and Montblank Starwalker just dont right as well as the Shoji... half the price but double the quality.

It's a very nice looking pen. It's comfortable in the hand, and it is a light pen. The nib is smooth with a nice ink flow. The fact that the ink doesn't dry in a long time thanks to the way the cap close make it very appealing to me.
So, overall I think it worths the money even though it may appear as a little expensive pen.

I got a great deal on the 3776 Platinum Shoji demonstrator. This immediately became one of my favorite pens. I use it daily to keep my journal in a Quo Vadis habana notebook at the end of the day to relax and unwind.

The blue sheen is absolutely great with a blue ink. The nib is awesome and glides over the page leaving a nice wet line.
