Sailor Professional Gear Fountain Pen Review
Product Review of the Sailor Professional Gear Series Fountain PensSailor Pen company has two very unique yet distinctive and well know and beloved pen styles, the 1911 and the Professional Gear fountain pen collections.
This review is about the Sailor Professional Gear Fountain pen, which I have been using for about 2 months now. The Professional Gear pens come in a variety of sizes, colors and a wide array of amazing Sailor nib sizes, for which Sailor is well know. I have the Sailor Professional Series Black regular size, rhodium trim, medium nib fountain pen, (11-2037-420) which has been a joy to use.
Size: The Professional Gear comes in king size, regular size and slim size pens. As mentioned, my pen is the regular sized Professional Gear pen, which is a full body yet slightly shorter pen. Capped, the Professional Gear (regular) is 5 inches in length, posted 5 7/8 inches long and un-posted 4 and ½ inches long. It’s long enough to use un-posted, which is my preference, but not un-naturally long when posted if that is your preference.
Color: The Professional Gear comes in a wide variety of colors, including black (which is the main color of the Professional Gear pen), white and colors such as ivory, orange and yellow. The Professional Gear also comes in various transparent (demonstrator) colors such as pink, green, orange and clear). Each Professional Series pen is offset with either silver/rhodium or gold trim. My Professional Gear is a black pen, with silver/rhodium trim, which is very classy and can be used as an everyday pen.
Nib: Sailor Pen Company, which was established over 100 years ago in 1911 is well known for its wide array of quality nibs. The Sailor Professional Gear fountain pen comes in 7 different nib sizes: Extra Fine, Fine, Medium Fine, Medium, Broad, Zoom and Music. As with most Japanese fountain pens, nib sizes usually run small when compared to other pen companies. For example, my Professional Gear Medium nib writes more like a standard fine nib from other manufacturers. The medium nib is smooth and exact with easy flow and fills with a cartridge/converter system. The Professional Gear also comes in a Piston fill system in its Sailor Professional Gear Realo Fountain Pens. Each Professional Gear fountain pen comes in either a 14K nib (slim series) or a 21K gold or two toned gold/rhodium nib (regular/king series).
Pros to the Professional Gear (Regular size):
- Cost, $310 retail for a 21K two toned gold nib is an outstanding value (regular), with the 14K nib (slim) retails for under $200 for a 14K nib fountain pen. For what you get the price is great (especially with Pen Chalet’s 20% discount).
- Quality of Nib
- Multiple options with color, size, nib size.
- Ink flow has been super.
- Classic look.
- Size is not overbearing for a full sized pen
- Converter fill system works flawlessly.
- Multiple options (size, color, nib size, finishes, etc.) make it hard to focus on a pen you want.
- Unique nib sizes may be harder to find (Medium Fine, Zoom, Music) and may have to be custom ordered
- Simple presentation box (remember it keeps the cost down).
Final Thoughts on the Sailor Professional Gear Fountain Pen Review
My Overall grade for the Sailor Professional Gear (regular size) (grade 1-10, with ten being the highest, grading value, ink flow, options and overall experience) is a 9.5. I highly recommend this pen to any fountain pen lover or beginner.
