Pilot Vanishing Point Fountain Pen Review

Product Review of the Pilot Vanishing Point Collection Fountain Pens

The Pilot vanishing point fountain pen comes in a wide selection of colors to choose from. There are a couple colors that really caught my eye, the gun metal with matte black and the all matte black finish. The nib on the pen is a glossy black to match the black matte pen.

Pilot Vanishing Point Fountain Pen Nib ReviewI opted for the extra fine nib which when I first tried the pen was very scratchy. As I began to use the pen the nib began to smooth out some and I enjoy using the pen. Since it is an extra fine nib it will never be as smooth as wider nibs. I have also used the Pilot Vanishing Point with a medium nib and it is a much smoother writer. So if you like a smoother pen I would suggest a wider nib. I do love how fine the pen writes with the extra fine nib and I can write great detail using it.

Most fountain pens are capped. One of the distinguishing features of the Pilot Vanishing point fountain pen is the way the nib retracts. The pen operates like a ballpoint pen with a "click action" to retract or extend the writing nib on the pen. This is a great convenience factor when using the pen making it quick and easy to use. One item to consider with this pen is that since the nib should be kept upright in your pocket the clip is located on the end of the barrel next to the nib rather than at the opposite end. For me this works just fine but for some writing styles the clip can be in the way of where you position your hand on the barrel of the pen making it awkward to use.

The Pilot Vanishing Point is made from all metal components making it a bit heftier than other pens. I do not find that it is overly heavy and the pen is well balanced making it enjoyable for use over longer periods.

The pen is well made with precision and is a very high quality pen. The pen disassembles by unscrewing the barrel at the center. Inside the nib section slides out of the pen. Included with the pen is an in converter as well as an ink cartridge. The pen will only accept the proprietary Pilot ink cartridges. Since the entire nib assembly comes out of the pen maintenance and cleaning are easy.

There is very little on the pen in the way of branding. On the back of the pen in the middle of the barrel is a subtle print of "Pilot Japan". Pilot has done a great job of not over branding the pen.

The Pilot Vanishing Point is a rock solid fountain pen. It is well made, fun to use and performs excellent. It looks great too.

I bought this VP as a gift for my husband. He likes the masculine look of the matte finish that I purchased. As with every VP we own (6?), it is great quality and writes like a dream.

First...I have had my eye on a Vanishing Point for sometime since I started into fountain pens. The idea of a retractable nib was an awesome thought. Not having to worry about my nib being bumped, drying out, or sitting on the page and have the ink sucked right out of my pen onto the page, if I didn't recap immediately. I'm not lazy but the recapping of pens is not what seems intuitive. Having to retrieve the cap as it rolls right off the desk and out of sight, then needing to climb on the floor and search for it, is not what is enjoyable. Having been born into the era where a click pen was the norm, the Vanishing Point was a great thought.

Second...I also am not the fancy type so the matte black had me from first sight. I really like my fountain pens, but again I do not seek the lime-light when out and about and using my pens. The matte black just seems so unassuming, which I like. For me it just blends in.

Third...When I finally decided to go for this one, I of course hunted around for a deal. I'm a bit on the frugal side. I hunted and found a deal at of all places Target Online. I thought about it and figured to give a try to Pen Chalet because during my search they had a banner that said they would price match. Target is an okay store, but I really don't think they handle many fountain pens and I didn't think they would be able to handle any fountain pen related issues or questions that may arise from my purchasing from the Target store. So I contacted Pen Chalet and to my surprise they really came through and handled the whole transaction with flying colors. Pleasant, kind, and when I spoke to a young lady about the purchase from Pen Chalet, she was very knowledgeable and kind. She even had her own experiences with a Vanishing Point and that reassured me that my decision to purchase from Pen Chalet was the right option. I have used other fountain pen online retailers and would have used them, but Pen Chalet boldly displayed their price matching banner and that was what appealed to me.

Follow-up...I have been using my Matte Black Vanishing Point with an extra fine nib using Noodler's Blue, daily for about a month now and I am very delighted I made the purchase. Smooth writer, plenty of ink flow, not at all uncomfortable as one would expect with the clip in such a position. The ease of just extending my thumb slightly upward over the retractable button, is easier than I thought. It reacts just like the click pens we've all used. Smooth action and the nib exiting and retracting back into that barrel is easy. I also like that the form of the pen keeps the nib off of my paper if I lay it down without retracting it. So no ink loss from the paper wicking it out of my pen. Also laying the pen down I can rest assured that it will not roll off the desk, the clip does the trick.

Bottom line... Pen Chalet handled my price match with no problem, my transaction with no problem, they were professional, kind, and pleasant. The Vanishing Point is proving to be one of my daily go to pens, I had been using a Lamy 2000 daily. So as you can see I am very satisfied in my new go to pen!

Received my stormtrooper VP the other day, and honestly every time I see it, I *have* to pick it up and click it. Its positively addicting. The medium nib is smooth, even on rough paper that my fines/extra fines are a bit scratchy on. The ink flow is just a bit bit wet, which makes it a little bit bolder of a line than I was expecting, but its quickly becoming a favorite in my modest collection!

Think I have finally found my favorite daily carry. I purchased the Black Matte Vanishing Point in a fine gold nib. This is my second Pilot Vanishing Point, the first has a medium nib which writes quite wet and wide. I find the fine writes like a wet somewhat narrow medium in any other pen. It’s perfect. The mechanism is flawless, the nib is butter smooth on paper and easy to use. I prefer it to my Platinum 3776 for everyday writing, although that too is a wonderful pen. The one I have gives a bit more scratchy feedback on paper compared to the Vanishing Point. The fullness of the Black Matte barrel adds comfort for my hand. I purchased both Vanishing Points on sale at Pen Chalet and am very grateful and pleased. Excellent service and terrific pens.
