This is the Platinum Preppy Fountain Pen. This is an inexpensive fountain pen so if you just want to try a fountain pen and see what it's like, this is a great way to do that. It's a clear, transparent, plastic pen. It comes with a plastic clip. This pen comes in various colors. This is the blue version of the pen. The cap actually just snaps off and it has a matching nib colored to whatever the clip is. So this pen comes in various colors: blue, red, black, orange. This nib and this clip are going to match whatever color pen you have. Then it has just the Preppy logo and Fountain Pen and the informational instructions about the pen here, printed onto the pen. Note: The nibs no longer match the color of the pen and are all silver in color.
You will be able to see the ink flow through the pen in this grip section. As you attach the ink, you unscrew the grip section from the barrel and included with each Preppy Pen is one ink cartridge. Now, you just simply insert that into the pen and then you can put that back on to use the pen. And since it's a cartridge style pen you can use different color inks, you don't have to use the ink that comes with it. You can always replace that with whatever color you would like.
This is a great way to start using a fountain pen, just to see what a fountain pen is like. Get your Preppy Platinum Fountain Pen at PenChalet.com!
Platinum Preppy Reviews
Love the Preppy! Great for anyone from beginner to advanced. Simple, easy to use, and always ready even if I don’t pick it up for a while. Nothing fancy, think of it as the Bic ballpoint of fountain pens. Reliable and functional.

I have 5 of the collector preppy FPs. Love them. I keep two of them loaded with some of my favorite ink. I am giving the last one I ordered to my sister.

These are pretty amazing for a sub $10 pen. You have to shake them a bit to get the ink flowing after they sit a couple of days. But they write well and I’m happy with them so far.

I bought a Platinum Preppy in Black with an EF nib, and it's great! It writes wonderful, thin lines that work well with my small handwriting, and it's very smooth. The price is also EXTREMELY reasonable for a pen that writes so nicely, so I completely understand why many people suggest this as an entry pen. It's astounding.
My only gripe might be that the resin/plastic body doesn't feel very sturdy. With a pen at this cost, I'd want to be able to throw it in my pen pouch and carry it with me, but I don't feel confident that it would survive. The build just doesn't feel extremely strong, and I'm worried about it breaking and then leaking ink everywhere.
Otherwise, I really have to praise the design. The spring-loaded mechanism in the cap is ingenious since it promotes longevity in the ink, and it's a lightweight pen whose nib just skates delicately over surfaces. I can see myself buying a few more of these (for inking with my everyday colors) because they work beautifully and feel dependable at an incredible price point.

I love these pens! For an inexpensive fountain pen, it's the best! They are comfortable to write with, come in lots of fun colors and very lightweight. I especially like the fine nib (.03). They round out my collection of fountain pens, from inexpensive to expensive.

A fantastic fountain pen, whether you're a beginner or not. I typically remove the logos on these pens by buffing with Nevr-Dull cotton wadding. They offer a great experience and are inexpensive enough to give to folks who are interested in using fountain pens but are 'afraid'. It makes the whole world of fountain pens seem more approachable.

FAQs about the Platinum Preppy
What is the Platinum Preppy and why is it so popular?
The Preppy is an affordable, reliable cartridge fountain pen with a surprisingly smooth nib and a cap seal that helps prevent dry-out—great for students, journaling, and everyday notes.
Which nib sizes are available and how does it write?
EF (~0.2), F (~0.3), and M (~0.5) are common. The steel nib is smooth and on the finer side, making tidy lines on ordinary office paper.
Does the Preppy have a cap that prevents drying out?
Yes. Its spring-sealed cap design helps keep ink from evaporating, reducing hard starts even if the pen sits for a while capped.
Which cartridges or converters does the Preppy use?
Platinum proprietary cartridges fit directly. Some runs support a Platinum converter for bottled ink; check your specific model/listing, as compatibility can vary.
Can I convert the Preppy to an eyedropper filler?
Many users do, since the body is plastic. Use an O-ring and 100% silicone grease on the section threads, and keep the pen away from heat/pressure swings. Convert at your own risk; check for leaks before carrying.
Is the Preppy comfortable and does the cap post securely?
Yes—lightweight for long sessions, and the cap posts securely to add length. Many users find it comfortable for everyday writing and note-taking.
Is the Preppy good for left-handed writers and quick notes on copy paper?
Yes. Choose EF or F for cleaner lines and faster dry times on ordinary paper. Pair with moderately quick-drying inks if you overwrite or side-write.
Can I reuse parts or upgrade later within the Platinum lineup?
Preppy nib/feeds are often interchangeable with related models like Prefounte or Plaisir (model-dependent). You can also refill Platinum cartridges with a syringe to use bottled inks economically.
Which inks are safe to use in the Preppy?
Most dye-based fountain-pen inks work well. If you use pigmented, permanent, or shimmering inks, clean more frequently—especially with EF/F—to keep the feed clear.
How do I clean and maintain a Preppy fountain pen?
Flush the nib/section with cool water every few weeks or when changing colors. Avoid hot water or alcohol. Let parts dry fully before re-inking to prevent dilution.
How durable is the clear plastic body and cap?
The Preppy is sturdy for its price. Avoid over-tightening the cap, dropping on hard floors, or storing in hot cars. A sleeve or case helps keep the clear body scratch-free.
What paper works best with the Preppy’s fine lines?
Office paper: EF/F minimize bleed and feathering. FP-friendly paper: F/M show smoother shading and ink character without sacrificing control.
Is the Preppy a good starter or classroom pen?
Absolutely. Low cost, reliable starts, and easy cartridge refills make it ideal for beginners, students, and lending to curious friends.
What if my Preppy hard-starts or skips?
Flush the nib to remove residues, ensure the cartridge is fully pierced and seated, and try a different ink or paper. Persistent issues usually resolve with a quick cleaning or nib swap.
Can I fly with a Preppy without leaks?
As with any fountain pen, fly with the reservoir full or empty, keep it nib-up, and open slowly after landing. The sealing cap helps, but pressure changes can still force ink out if half full.
Q:
Will this pen work with Jinhao universal ink cartridges?
A:
No, sorry the Platinum pens have a proprietary ink cartridge and will only accept Platinum brand cartridges.
Q:
Can the Platinum Preppy fountain pen be converted to use bottle ink?
A:
The Platinum 500 ink converter will fit the Platinum Preppy fountain pen and may be purchased separately. This gives you the option with the Platinum Preppy fountain pen to use cartridges or bottle inks. In order to use bottle inks either add the Platinum 500 converter or you can also seal the threads using silicon grease and convert the pen to an eye dropper fountain pen.
