Sailor 1911 Standard Royal Tangerine Fountain Pens

Beautiful pen. The balance and weight are perfect for me and the color makes it easy to find.

This is my first Sailor pen, and I am very impressed. My medium nib (I’d say it’s ~ same as a western steel fine) has a smooth and pleasant graphite-like feel to it, which I’ve never experienced before, although other reviewers have commented on this being a Sailor hallmark. I originally paired the pen with a dry ink that had hard start issues and didn’t pair nicely with the nib’s feedback. Switched in one of my pilot iroshizuku inks, which are known for being moderately wet, and now it’s just perfect. I can keep it uncapped during the entirety of an hour-long meeting with intermittent writing and it doesn’t hard start at all. This plus the smooth feel of the nib and the unique, pleasant feedback justifies the price to me. Virtually no flex in the nib, but I think the slight give it does have reminds me it’s not steel.
I have medium-sized hands (by latex glove sizing) and I find this pen comfortable with or without posting. Those with large hands may find it to be a bit too small. It’s light and well balanced without feeling cheap, though I would have liked a little more heft in the material, particularly in the section. The orange color slightly changes depending on the lighting environment (fluorescent vs. incandescent, which I think is why so many people online say pictures don’t do it justice) but I don’t think it ever ventures into a super-obnoxious neon orange. In my book, this is just textbook orange, my favorite color :) Hope that info helps!

Fantastic pen! Gorgeous color, a delight to hold and use, and the nib is perfectly smooth and responsive. My new favorite pen! (I’ve used it with Sailor Jentle Apricot ink for a week or two.)
