About the Pilot MR Metropolitan

The Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen offers a fresh new modern look. Designed with a brass barrel and stainless steel accents and nib, the original Pilot Metropolitan comes in three matte finishes, black, burnished silver, and champagne gold. Now with added colors the Pilot Metropolitan fountain pens are available in the Animal and now Retro Pop collections.

Packaged in a convenient gift box and shipped with one black ink cartridge as well as a squeeze converter. This inexpensive fountain looks and feels quality. The Pilot Metropolitan is a great gift and must-have for fountain pen enthusiasts from beginners to experienced.

The Pilot Metropolitan is one of the top starter fountain pen and is often compared to another starter pen, the Safari created by well known Lamy pens. Although the Safari has a wider range of color and nib choices, the Pilot Metropolitan has recently expanded it's range to Fine, Medium, and Stub with a decent color selection. Although the Pilot Metropolitan doesn't quite match the versatility of the Lamy Safari, the lower price point makes the Metropolitan an excellent value, surpassing many other budget-friendly fountain pens.

The Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen boasts several standout features that elevate it above others in its price range. Firstly, the barrel is crafted from brass, lending the pen a substantial heft and the feel of a much pricier writing instrument. Secondly, the nib is a highlight, offering exceptional quality. Despite being a medium nib, which might not appeal to everyone, it delivers an impressively smooth writing experience with minimal feedback. This combination of weight and nib performance makes the Pilot Metropolitan a remarkable pen for its cost.

The Pilot Metropolitan's brass barrel adds a significant, enjoyable weight to the pen, enhancing the overall writing experience. This heft makes the pen feel more balanced and substantial in your hand, lending an air of quality often found in more expensive pens. The added weight promotes smoother writing, as the pen glides effortlessly across the page, reducing hand fatigue during extended use. This tactile feedback transforms everyday writing into a more engaging and pleasant activity.

Although there is a limited selection of nib options, the Pilot nib performs well, and is practical for constant use. Also, the Stub nib option also provides adoption for varied writing needs. When paired with a basic ink such as Aurora Black ink and the Rhodia 80g DotPad, the combination delivers an exceptionally smooth writing experience. Pilot Metropolitan's nib is remarkable with exceptional quality. The performance ranks among the best basic steel nibs available across any price range. The nib's smoothness stands out, offering an effortless glide with almost no tactile response on the paper.

Pilot MR Metropolitan Video Script

This is the Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen. I comes in a black cardboard box with the Pilot logo embossed in silver in top. The cardboard box is simply an outer shell. Inside we have a faux leather box with a hinge top to it. Inside of the box on the inside of the lid is the Pilot logo embossed again in silver.

Included with the pen is an additional ink cartridge.

This is the silver version of the Pilot Metropolitan. It is a brushed silver and has a shiny band running through the center section of the pen. There is also a small chrome band running between the cap and the barrel of the pen.

On the backside of the cap we have Pilot Japan. It has a chrome clip. On the one side of the chrome clip is engraved Japan and on the other side is engraved Pilot. The cap on this pen simply snaps off and is easily posted for writing. It is a nice size pen in my hand. It has a chrome band running around right between the nib section and the barrel of the pen and a black nib section of the pen.

The nib on this pen is a stainless steel nib. It has the Pilot logo engraved on it as well as some other etchings.

To replace the cartridge or the converter on this pen we simply unscrew the nib section from the barrel. Included with the pen is a squeeze type converter if you would rather use bottled inks. You simply put the nib in the bottle of ink and you can squeeze the converter to draw the ink into it. It has a spring piece of metal around a rubber chamber. That can be used to draw the ink into it. Instead of a converter if you would rather use a cartridge there is one included or you can use a different color cartridge you can that as well.

This particular fountain pen also comes in a couple different colors. We have a gold version of the pen and we also have a black version of the pen. Each of the pens are a duller or matte finish on the barrel and the cap with a shinier band running around the center of the barrel.

These are some inexpensive but great quality fountain pens. Pilot is a great company. It is a Japanese product. Get yours today at PenChalet.com!

My husband and I are huge fans of Pilot Metropolitan pens. One of my smoothest, most perfect pens is a Pilot Metropolitan. I bought this particular one because it has a sleek, dark vibe at what amounts to a budget price.

One of the best pens I've ever owned (over 10 years now) so I decided to buy a second one in fine. First was medium. Very smooth writing. Not too heavy or too long for my smaller hands. Love the different colors too

I have most of the pens in the Metro line, including those sold under the 'cocoon' name in Japan. I'd say they are ideal beginner fountain pens, but they are perfectly respectable intermediate pens as well. They are sturdy, easy to clean, perform very consistently, and if you have a smaller hand like I do, the slimmer profile is a big plus. Overall a great pen with unbeatable value; this is my go to for everyday and for travel.

FAQs about the Pilot MR Metropolitan

What is the Pilot Metropolitan and why is it so popular for beginners?

The Pilot Metropolitan (also sold as “MR”) is a metal-bodied, entry-friendly fountain pen known for smooth writing, reliable flow, and great value. It’s often recommended as a first fountain pen because it’s robust, affordable, and easy to maintain.

What materials does the Pilot Metropolitan use and how does it feel in hand?

It has a brass body with a lacquer finish and a snap cap. The metal construction gives moderate weight and a solid, balanced feel without being heavy.

Which nib sizes are available and how do they write?

Common sizes are Fine (F) and Medium (M). Pilot’s F writes a relatively fine Western line; M is smooth and slightly wetter. Both are stainless steel and tuned for everyday paper.

Does the Metropolitan take cartridges or bottled ink (converter)?

Both. It uses Pilot-proprietary cartridges and is compatible with the Pilot CON-40 converter for bottled ink (older CON-20/CON-50 were previous options).

Does the cap post securely and change the balance of the pen?

Yes, the snap cap posts firmly. Posted, the pen feels a bit longer and slightly back-weighted; many users enjoy it posted, but unposted is nicely balanced too.

Is the grip comfortable, and does it get slippery during long sessions?

The tapered section is smooth; most find it comfortable. If your hands run dry or oily, a slightly higher grip on the section or a light grip pressure usually prevents slipping.

Can I swap the nib on a Metropolitan with other Pilot nibs for different line styles?

Many users swap in compatible Pilot steel nibs from pens like the Plumix (italic), Penmanship (EF), Prera, or Kakuno. Always slide the nib straight off/on gently to avoid damaging the feed or tines.

What inks and paper pair well with the Metropolitan for everyday notes?

On typical office/school paper, a Fine nib with a moderately dry or well-behaved dye ink reduces feathering and bleed. For premium notebooks, Medium nibs and more saturated inks feel smoother and show more shading.

Is the Metropolitan good for left-handed writers and fast note-taking?

Often, yes. Left-handers tend to prefer Fine nibs with quicker-drying inks. Adjusting paper angle and using less-coated paper can further reduce smearing.

How do I clean and maintain a Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen?

Flush the section and converter with cool water when changing inks or every few weeks. Allow parts to dry before reassembly. Occasional pen-flush helps if flow feels sluggish.

Can I use permanent, waterproof, or shimmering inks in the Metropolitan safely?

You can, but clean more frequently. Pigmented, iron-gall, and shimmer inks can leave residue if the pen sits unused. Regular flushing maintains reliable starts and flow.

My Metropolitan hard-starts or skips—what should I try first?

Flush to remove any manufacturing oils, try a different ink (slightly wetter or drier, depending on paper), and ensure light, consistent pressure. Persistent issues often resolve with a quick nib alignment or nib swap.

What Metropolitan variants exist, and is it a good value overall?

Styles include classic colors, “Animal” trim bands, and Retro Pop editions (market-dependent). Across versions, it remains one of the best-value starter pens thanks to its metal body, smooth nibs, and dependable performance.

Is the Metropolitan portable and comfortable for smaller hands?

Yes. It’s compact enough to carry, the clip grips pockets securely, and posting the cap lengthens the pen for a comfortable reach—useful for smaller hands or quick on-the-go notes.

Q:

What is the difference between the Metro Retro line and the MR? Do they use the same ink cartridges?

Asked on Sep 27 2017 by Kathryn
A:
All of the Pilot Metropolitan pens are the same design with just different color schemes. The Retro line is just newer and more colorful. They both use the same Pilot IC-50 or IC-100 ink cartridges.
Q:

What converter can fit Pilot Metropolitan. I read that Con-50 doesn't fit although it should do so.

Asked on Mar 7 2017 by Ramona
A:
The Pilot Metropolitan Fountain Pen comes with a Pilot CON-20 converter. You also use the Pilot CON-50 as well. The CON-20 is a squeeze type converter while the CON-50 is a piston style and easier to use.
Q:

What is the volume difference between the Con 20 and Con 50?

Asked on Dec 4 2016 by David
A:
It is the size of the converter as well as how they fill with ink. Both with fit the Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen. The Con-20 is a squeeze type converter and the Con-50 is a piston that is controlled with a twist knob on the end. It comes with the Con-20 but if you want a spare converter I would recommend the Con-50.
Q:

What converters can fit Pilot MR Metropolitan Fountain Pen? CON-20?50?

Asked on Jan 22 2016 by Gavin
A:
The Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen comes with a Con-20 converter included. The Pilot Con-50 converter will fit as well.

Asked on Aug 7 2015 by Jim

Asked on Dec 7 2014 by Andrew
A:
