About the Montegrappa Bijo-To-Yaju

The Montegrappa Bijo-To-Yaju fountain pen is a luxurious, handcrafted, limited-edition writing instrument created in collaboration with Japanese designer Tomita Kazuhiko. Ambitious and avant-garde, the Montegrappa Bijo-To-Yaju is inspired by Jean Cocteau's 1946 film La Belle et la Bête. Two Japanese woodblock printing techniques, Kabuki and Kintsugi, work together in this unmatched piece to fearlessly interpret the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast.

Montegrappa's Bijo-To-Yaju design calls attention to classic symbols weaved throughout the famous tale (heroism, beauty, and love).

The Monterappa Bijo-To-Yaju fountain pen is fitted with an 8mm 18K gold nib and an ebonite feed. The Bijo-To-Yaju also uses a 32-tooth ratcheted piston-fill mechanism.

The Montegrappa Bijo-To-Yaju fountain pen is covered with symbols based on well known story, starting with the finial and the display base (both representing the beast or the Shishi). The golden enamel on the pen body emulates the Japanese Kintsugi (golden repair) technique. The golden key seen in Cocteau’s film is replicated on top of the pen's barrel and corresponds to a lock worked in to the pen's cap band. Both elements are cast in vermeil, a veiled reference to forbidden love.

Each Montegrappa Bijo-To-Yaju fountain pen is limited to 222 pieces and is packaged in a lacquered wooden case also designed by Kazuhiko, the designer Montegrappa worked with to create this limited edition release. The box emulates the tiered roofs of Japanese medieval castles and is a stunning finishing touch to an already gorgeous fine writing instrument.
