Magna Carta Mag 1000 Fountain Pens

Amazing huge nib and feed in a surprisingly nice and balanced pen. Sadly, the ink leaks out through the feed no matter what I do. Must be a bad design because my Mag 800 is even worse. Nice idea, poor execution.

This is a GIANT pen! I like chunky pens but this one is over the top and I love holding it. I got the Fine nib and this thing is a GUSHER! I got the Lapis Lazuli and used Edelstein Golden Lapis and the shimmer is wonderful and it writes well but it is a VERY wet pen. This is definitely worth getting if you like giant pens or just want something that is unique because it is the largest one I have ever seen!

This is a great pen, with the hugest nib I've ever seen. For the first month or so I though I'd gotten a lemon, because it leaked ink badly. Eventually I figured out how to tighten the nib and ink converter better and the leaking stopped. Pen Chalet's price was much better than what other vendors sell the Mag 1000 for.

When I received this pen I was surprised by the size of the pen and the nib. I wasn’t sure how well it would write. I was very happily surprised how it felt in my hand and even more so how it wrote. Very smooth and graceful writer for a large pen.

At the risk of generating a few Freudian jokes, I'm attracted to large nibs and have several pens with modern #8 nibs, so when the Magna Carta 1000 came out, I bided my time and, of course, got a good deal through Pen Chalet. I have the rose ebonite which is reminiscent of many "wood grain" vintage pens. This ebonite pen is of good quality and the style is classic. The nib is huge and dwarfs a #8 nib. The medium nib wrote well out of the box and is fairly wet. I have not had any hard starts or persistent skips. Drawbacks? A couple - the list price is too high for a steel nib pen but, fortunately, Pen Chalet brings it down to a more reasonable level. Because the nib is so large, it would be nice to have a bit more decoration on it (a la Montblanc - maybe 8586 for Kanchenjunga the tallest peak in India). Finally, because the nib extends a good distance from the section, those who hold their pens close to the nib may not find it comfortable for long writing sessions. Despite these few qualifications, I am quite satisfied with the pen but, to be honest, it's more of a novelty item for me than a pen I would take to the office for daily writing.

I have mixed feelings about this pen. I bought it because I was curious about the #10 steel nib - the largest in production at the current time. The MSRP is high for a steel nib pen. I bought the ebonite and gold trim version. It is very beautifully constructed, and reminds me of a giant size Waterman from the golden era. There is a huge ebonite feed with many fins, which will reduce the risk of burping. It won't burp when using the converter, but you can only write about 5 pages and then the converter is empty of ink. As an eyedropper pen, it holds 6 ml of ink. I found that when it's about half empty, it may tend towards burping. This is cured by opening up the pen, and letting the air pressure equalize. You can then add more ink to refill it, or screw the section back onto the body. There is no burping until the pen writes dry after that. In eyedropper mode, you can write dozens of pages before it goes dry. The nib is semi-flex. It's not advertised as such, but when that much metal projects away from the section (4 cm from section to point), there is bound to be springiness. Ink flow is generous with Aurora Black. (I haven't tried other inks in it yet). It took me a while to learn how to write with this pen. My fingers are so much farther up the pen than I'm used to, with smaller nib pens. Once you get used to the new grip, it is a fun pen to write with. What gave me the mixed feelings are the high price, and the necessity of learning a new pen hold. Once you get over that, it is a unique and good writing pen.

This is such a unique and MONSTROUS nib, it is a great value that gets within the Emperor range but doesn’t break your bank.

I carry this pen in a case that hangs from my belt. It is like having a dagger at the ready. With one additional O-ring and a little silicone grease on the threads, I've eye-dropped the barrel full of ink. Now I'm ready to write anywhere, any time. Love this pen. Smooth nib. No hard starts. Lightweight. Works well in my hands. Might be too big for some. Huge 'wow' factor with the ginormousous nib.
